CALAMITY EP 1 - CHARACTER 3

Comments

Sam and Aabria deciding to make characters that were married in the past is one of the best choices anyone ever made in character creation it's SUCH a fun dynamic

Replying to your early question about Cathmoira. If it's answered later, I'll delete this, but the quick version is that Cathmoira is the other half of the flying city that was left behind. There was a city on the mountain. They made the mountain fly with the center of the city on it becoming Avalir. All the burbs were left behind, and those became Cathmoira. So on a regular schedule the flying city returns to it's original launch point to "restore" its old connections. More details will come, but that's the overview.

The next character, Nydas, may be a familiar name from a Mighty Nein episode. Lou is positively DELIGHTFUL Laeryn’s intro had a buncha lore dump stuff, but some simple takeaways Avalier is a flying city made of the top of a mountain. It flies around Exandria collecting magic stuff via research, exploration and trading with other cities. They are constantly looping around, and every 7 years they return and land at their sister city Cathmoira is the bottom half of the mountain that Avaliar came frome, and as Brennan described, its a big circle that can serve as a landing place for the peak. Every couple decades there is a magic event called a Celestial Solstice. In real life a solstice occurs twice a year when, during Earth’s trip around the sun, the north or south pole is farthest away from the sun. In Exandria, this is the magic event when the different planes are “close together” An apogee solstice is when the planes get SUPER close together and the lines get blurrred. Brennan says when this happens, magical possibilities abound. These happen every 120ish years All thats really important is that a big magic event is happening, tbh

Yup, exactly what Beagle said. Nothing to add. You are doing great, keeping track of all the (rather heavy) lore.

Sam and Aabria ex dynamic is one of my favorite parts of this series 😂

To your questions at the end: Laerryn is essentially the head engineer for the city. She's in charge of all kinds of stuff, but especially the magical engine that keeps the city flying. Avalir does fly, but it doesn't actually dock anywhere but Cathmoira. That's what's such a big deal about this, it's the first time in seven years the city will actually touch back down on land. Basically Cathmoira and Avalir were once one city/settlement called Toramunda, which existed on a mountain called Mount Ygora. Then, some wizards essentially cut the top half off and lifted it into the sky to create Avalir (more details on that to come.) So what Brennan was describing is that the city of Cathmoira exists only around the outside edge of the mountain, because the flat top left when Avalir lifted off has to be kept clear so that the city can land again. The solstice thing will be delved into as you go on, but for now all that you need to understand is that this Apogee Solstice is extremely powerful, which would in theory allow for incredibly powerful works of magic that otherwise wouldn't be close to possible. Laerryn seems very, very excited about that, and we don't know why yet.

I love the dynamic of having exes in a D&D party, it actually inspired me and my bestie to create a similar dynamic when we started our latest campaign, its been a blast!
