Isekai Ojisan Episode 4 - Smooth

Comments

Might be too late but here is some comments on the show (no spoilers) The theme of the show is to not stick to societal norms and instead follow what makes you happy the most. This is why most of Uncle's stories end una non fulfilling way, If you consider things from his perspective he is not doing anything necessarily wrong (save for breaking the barrier), tho of course the show purposefully frames him as dense and sometimes evil for comedic value. Not the kind of show where you follow a hero on their journey, but rather one where some random dude got isekai'd. Many call this show a reverse isekai because it starts with the mc coming back, but the reason it's a reverse isekai is that the escapism for the mc is in the real world. The Uncle represents what used to be a geek in the 90s which, from what we can see, was something you'd be ostracized for (you can see that happening to Takafumi in this episode) So you strap an innocent socially inept 17yo and send him to a world were everyone treats him like a monster just because of the way he looks also being constantly reminded how dumb and ugly he is by an elf girl, and it becomes really apparent why he enjoys his life in the real world a lot more (you barely see him genuinely smile on the fantasy one) Also on that note, never properly addressed on the manga or anime, but most of the times the Uncle makes the funny faces he is probably trying to smile.Given that he never had much social interaction he seems to overdo it and ends up coming up as creepy.

Notes of this episode and previous one discussion Previous episode was about appearances, the whole turning the elf's image into a vtuber was a way of showing how both worlds were superficial, the uncle didn't understand that until he saw the viewcount and comments as he thought he was just doing a gameplay video while showcasing his transformation magic. Instead he was shown the nature of the internet hence saying "you are all the same" while thinking of the game rankings, as both the magazine readers and his youtube community were superficial, just like the other world. Note that he realizes this right after thinking to himself that relationships are not all about appearances while looking at Fuyimija and Takafumi. For this episode, I'm almost certain they don't think the female characters are necesarily pure, more so, the uncle basically has no interest in the Elf (or anything that isn't SEGA) as he finds her anoying and Fuyimija is more or less sister zoned. Not sure if it's because of the subtitles, but the part where Takafumi says she is being considerate is related to the fact that memory erasing can affect your personality and state of mind, hence he thought she was trying to protect him form any side effects. From the get go he assumed she wanted his memories erased. The whole "you only loose because you've given up from the start" and "you can still turn the tables" goes for both Fuyimija, trying a new way to approach Takafumi by being more "attractive" to him, and the Elf not giving up on the uncle dispite his denseness, thinking that if she gives up on him she would have failed from the start. Probably one of the reasons the "fanservice" works is because most of the character designs are rather tamed compared to other works in the medium, because of that when there is a display of sexiness it feels more character driven rather than a way to please the viewers. Also helps that any tensions is broken apart with comedy. While I would like the Uncle to notice the Elf's fellings as much as everyone else, he is not really obligated to do so, especially since she is not honest and forward about it so far. Thinking that being mean to someone is gona make them fall in love with you is just as ridiculous as thinking gamer knowledge would help you in a fantasy world, from his perspective he is just being harassed. Still probably one of the sweetest tsundere characters ever written and she does end up getting what she wants one way or another. She asked him for dinner last episode and in this one she dinned with him, wanted to spend the night with him and got something "similar" on that dungeon.

Takafumi actively and consciously choosing to not look at Fujimiya as a female and Ojisan having no interest in romantic relationships with real people are the catalyst of most comedy in this and is absolutely hilarious.

Always ask them out. Better to regret being rejected than to wonder what might have happened. And, who knows, maybe you'll get lucky.

Fujimiya and Elf are strong, capable women who can act to achieve their desires. Elf just needs to cure a crippling case of Tsundere instead of hiding her acts behind the memory blocking headband.... Fujimiya just wanted to celebrate the fruits of her middle achool glow-up and disabuse Takafumi of the urchin imagery. At least she only asked Uncle for the "poison" and not a tazer to go with it.
