fun fact! the amount of salt needed to salt the earth of the entirety of carthage was far too much for the romans to conjure up, they did it metaphorically. see, there was a roman tradition to stick a javelin in enemy lands when formally declaring war on them, so in cases where that was impossible rome kept a little patch of "enemy land" in rome to stick a javelin in when starting a war. and this little patch of "enemy land" was probably the thing that was actually salted as a metaphorical gesture to the carthaginians.
