I absolutely loved this movie. As an asian American, this was a huge deal for me and my family. Probably the most artistic and beautiful marvel movie to date, the music score was phenomenal, and the martial art sequences was handled very very well. I can't wait to see him in future movies!

2021-09-04 11:47:22 +0000 UTCDid not like this film. Clichéd plot with well trodden story beats and a awful third act that felt unearned and boring desipite all the CG mayhem. Simu Liu as Shang-Chi is perfectly cast, and carries the whole film on his back. Cannot wait to see more of him in the MCU going forward, but his first solo outing was big miss for me.

I may not be Chinese but a lot of the themes and scenes of this movie made me feel seen. Also according to some of my Chinese American friends, there are a lot of nuances and deeper meaning in the mandarin spoken lines that the subtitles don't do justice. For instance the line where Wenwu says to the old man "I've lived a thousand of your lifetimes, young man", in Mandarin he says "I've eaten more salt in my life than you've eaten rice in yours", which was described to me as a "boomer Chinese thing to say"
