Haikyuu!! 4x21 REACTION!

As twins ourselves, we have to say—this episode did an incredible job of capturing the twin dynamic!! 👏

The Miya twins already intrigued us, but diving into their backstory and seeing how they complement one another (and literally kick each other in the back...lol) made us feel even more connected to their journey. It’s impossible not to root for them!!

Also, major shout out to the homie Nishinoya! That moment between him and Kinoshita was pure gold 🥹

We appreciate every single one of you beautiful people for joining our Patreon and supporting us! 🙏🏽💜

if you like musicals or have not watched anime musicals I actually highly recommend Uta no Prince Sama there are 4 seasons and I own 3 out of the 4 because the fourth as not been released onto dvd but you can watch it online obviously

Nightwing

same here and yes he certainly does one of my favourites is Tokiya Ichinose from Uta no Prince Sama

Nightwing

And Mamoru Miyano is iconic! He voices so many of my faves.

Thanks for the discussion! I love having someone willing to go deep with Haikyu!! analysis. Happy New Year, @Nightwing!

Thanks for you thoughts antionette7, and thanks for not getting made at me eithere. You are right as well. Furudate does really know how to make awesome characters. I will admit I am starting to lose the hate I feel towards him but I still very strongly dislike him alot and I actually like the fact that he and Hinata get along really well in the timeskip. Plus also Atsumu is voiced by favourite Japanese VA Mamoru Miyano

Next episode Atsumu indeed apologizes to his teammates mid game for an error. Furudate never writes characters as simplistic and flat as your characterization of Atsumu. I also agree the manga provides more detail. Also take into consideration how other characters you may admire gravitate toward and treat Atsumu. He has Aran’s lifelong friendship, Kita’s care and interest (even in the time skip), Kageyama’s respect, Hinata’s partnership (time skip portion of manga), and his brother’s unwavering love, patience, and support. Also, consider the level he achieves playing and the respect he’s given as a professional at the national and Olympic levels. Also, this chapter in the manga is titled “Love.” There are multiple reasons Furudate titled the chapter as such which are ripe for analysis. I understand how Atsumu’s confidence comes off as arrogance and how he lacks skills when relating to others and how that can repel some readers/watchers. I just never find any of Furudate’s characters lacking warts or lacking things to admire or love. All his characters are round and so very human. It’s okay to not relate to someone or not prefer someone but I think there is always room to consider someone as not wholly awful or wholly unlikeable.

Catching up!🏐🫶🏻 My top 5 (an impossible choice lol): Kageyama Tobio Tsukishima Kei Miya Atsumu (I love Osamu, too) Sakusa Kiyoomi Kozume Kenma So hard not to include Kiyoko, Takada, Ukai, Ushijima, Oikawa, Akaashi, Bokuto…so many more. Even the most unlikeable characters are written so human-centric, it’s hard not to feel affection for them or identify with their perspectives. Haikyu!!, to this day, after many years of anime consumption, remains in my Top 4 anime of all time (Banana Fish, AOT, Haikyu!!, Fruits Basket).

antionette7

thank you Goose for you opinion and thanks for not getting mad as me as well. You also pointed out good points so thanks once again

I think people forget that all the players in the anime are 15-18, and 18 is very rare as they usually drop club by then. Atsumu is also wayyy better than Oikawa (and I do love Oikawa, and merely like Atsumu) .Atsumu is the best player on the 1st/2nd best team heading into nationals. Invited to Jr Nationals, has so many insane plays like Oikawa's super-long set, in one single match. Oikawa is definitely a teammate, and has a higher VB IQ (part of this is experience, but he also just seems smarter). They both have their +/-'s but at this point, Atsumu iirc the best HS setter in Japan. EDIT-also great call on Atsumu being one of those players with a mix of extreme talent and competitive drive like MJ. They must be VERY hard to play with, esp when you're only in HS. It was hard enough for pro players to handle MJ and Kobe's demands. At the same time, they could never say anything bc MJ/Kobe types work harder than everyone (I think we Atsumu doing this in the flashback with Osamu looking on) and they place WAYYYY heavier expectations on themselves. There's def an argument to be made that this is unhealthy, bc there's only a handful of people like MJ and Kobe who become the best in their field. If you can't back it up, or are just pretty damn good, I don't think you deserve to have that attitude. Atsumu is on that track, and as you said- he is still sooo young/immature and the manga def does a better job of showing this. Those flashbacks were all before this season too, but that's not clear with the fight and some other parts in the anime.

Goose

No thank you juniebjones you are the 1st person to not be mad at me for my dislike of Atsumu and I appreciate it so much. Your right hate is pretty strong I should have said strong dislike. You brought out very good points that I myself should have noticed. Lol no I love your rant I tend to do the same thing. I also love analyzing characters and I love those little details. It is refreshing to talk with someone else like that. Also if you haven't noticed my favourite characters are Suga and Oikawa. Just curious do you know Fairy Tail?

Nightwing

i think you're def coming off a little strong. atsumu and oikawa are fundamentally different both in the sport and as ppl so i think that its sort of a weird comparison. i do also think he is most more talented on the court compared to oikawa at this point in time for multiple factors, but in terms of their characters, they both shine in their own way. atsumu is written as immature and unlikable or annoying to many of the characters in the story, and he's stubborn and definitely an asshole. but i think the author wrote him to be that way on purpose. he's still only 16/17 atp and has a lot to learn and grow from which i think is emphasized a little bit more in the manga. while he may not be the best person, i do think hate is a strong feeling to have over him since it's not like he's evil or nothing. he has a certain perspective of how you should be playing and if you don't live up to that expectation, you're trash in his head. im not exactly sure, but i think the author may have been trying to allude to players like MJ in the NBA. he was disliked by many of his own teammates bc of how high his expectations were for them and how intense he was, but he was one of the hardest workers and, ofc, one of the greatest of all time. i think the author may just be showing how isolating and intense being one of the best can be bc ppl at that level tend to think a certain way that we may not be able to understand. atsumu is talented but very hard working, and ofc extremely passionate which is smth most ppl dont feel to the degree an athlete like him does i dont blame you for disliking him and youre ofc allowed to feel however you feel, but i just wanted to put in my own take a little bit. maybe this is just me, but i find it hard to truly hate a character (unless theyve done actual vile things) bc i think their perspective and personality can be a lot more interesting and fun to analyze. sorry if this was kinda rambly !! i dont think i had a general direction in where i was going w this lmao

juniebjones

my top five are Kageyama, Kenma, Oikawa, Hinata, and Yamaguchi! my top five changed so many times after all of my rewatches but i think this time it's pretty solid. hinata actually wasn't in my top five until some of my most recent rewatches.. season 4 really put him up there for me.

riddle

What I love about Miya twins story, aside from them being competitive, is that Atsumu has someone who can fight him unlike others talking at back. It's pretty hard to find a friend who can talk to you when you're being a jerk lol. But you can't be a good player with just a "good friend" to everyone. Just like Kageyama , then he got Hinata with him (along with seniors like Daichi and Tanaka), but it's really hard to find a friend like that. Even Kageyama and Hinata didn't talk for a while when they had fight, but twins are brothers so they make up pretty quick :) Also when Atsumu get isolated because he's different than others, Osamu pick up a fight with him (like when he threw a ball to Atsumu's head), I think that's also helped him for not being completely away from other teammates.

mamimumemo

J&J got twins flash back is the funniest thing :)))))

mamimumemo

Kinoshita's moment is one of my favorites (well I have too many favorite scenes in Haikyuu lol), even though he couldn't "play" well, the whole time he had been practicing serving against Noya worked both for them in the match. Even if Noya practiced overhand with other players, it might didn't work without Kinoshita, which means Kinoshita is a really good jump float server too. And of course it's obvious in the match, because Kinoshita had observed Noya so well when playing against him, he knows where Noya needs to go. (He also the one that noticed Noya has habit of finger push when he needed to calm down by doing that routine when they practiced together)

mamimumemo

I know your twins and some of the stuff that happens is a result of the Miya's being twins and brothers so I hope this does not come as offensive but this is why I ABSOLUTELY HATE Atsumu. His personality stinks since they were little and he does not change. He still calls his teammates trash and gets mad when they don't score off his sets and he takes no responsibility for his mistakes. You also see this during the All Japan National Youth Training Camp. That is why I ABSOLUTELY HATE it when they compare Atsumu to Oikawa or they say that Atsumu is better than Oikawa. The only thing they have in common is that they are both talented. At least Oikawa knows his limits and will admit to his own faults and mistakes and will do what he can to correct them. He also brings out the best in his teammates and also brings out 100% of their potential. While Atsumu only gives his teammates sets that they can easily hit to score instead of being considerate about his teammates state of being and bringing up their morale like Suga or helping them reach their best potential like Oikawa. So when they ask who is the best setter or who would you rather have on team between Oikawa, Atsumu, and Kageyama this is my choice. #1 Oikawa & Suga because of how similar they are. #2 Kageyama and last Atsumu. Sorry for the rant and the hate on Atsumu but that is just my honest opinion and I know I am going to have a lot of people telling me I should not hate Atsumu and that he is better Oikawa and why would I even have the audacity to choose Suga over him as well. Let me know what you think.

Nightwing

Was just looking for my translation to check and write the same x) But yes! Apparently the reason Osamu appeared was simply the author wanting to incorporate twins in the story. For such a well-written, natural dynamic, it surprised me when I first found out

Hello J&J, I am a twin (fraternal) but neither of us ever played sports so we didn't compete that way. Also, we've always been way too different and I commented on one of your JJK reactions about this too; but I understand the trauma that you talked about in several of your reactions regarding being twins, even thought we don't look identical, just the fact that we are twins forced us to be compared a lot by family, friends, peers and just anyone who met us in general which really hurt our relationship as sisters when we were trying to be our own person. Anyway, after many years of fights and resentment we began to repair our relationship, it was actually distance and growing up that allowed us to start the healing process and we are now closer that ever even though we live in different continents. I love your reactions and watching you guys is always calming and relaxing for me after a chaotic day. Love from Colombia! ❤️

i was so excited for yall to watch this episode cause of this flashback to see how much yall would relate to it this isnt my own thought, i read it somewhere in a comment section, but i feel like atsumu is what kageyama couldve been like if he had a support system from the start. kags was a prodigy and had high expectations of his teammates which he wasnt afraid to voice in a disrespectful way, and this led to him being disliked by his peers. similarly, atsumu was extremely talented and was rude to a lot of his teammates which caused him to be disliked by them the difference is that atsumu had osamu to help him. osamu stuck by his side and competed w him as an equal which is smth kageyama never had. this mightve been one of the reasons kageyama self destructed in middle school. he has that now in high school with all his teammates, more specifically hinata, which is why he has slowly but surely come out his shell and grown as a player. but it makes me think if kageyama couldve had a healthier mindset if he had at least one person by his side when he was younger it also reminds me of the beginning of s1 when ukai was watching kags and hinata play for the first time and asked takeda if they grew up playing together or smth. when being told that they had just met, he comments "how cruel" because if they had met when they were younger, they couldve matured into much better players together by pushing each other also i did like anita bonita as a kid; one of my older sisters and fav teacher called me that. and the reason i was called hannah montana is cause my first day at my elementary school, my teacher thought my name was hannah for the whole day and i was a shy kid so i didnt correct her. obviously she eventually realized it was ana, but atp it stuck w my classmates and they had already started calling me hannah montana </3 anyway sorry for the long comment !!

juniebjones

Episode 12 - After Hinata gets inspired by Hoshiumi he says "I am glad I came here. Episode 21 - Kageyama after seeing Atsumu's perfect low set says to Hinata " I am glad I came here too." I love the parallels between these two episodes the inspiration Hinata and Kageyama find in the other competitors around them. Seeing those palyers better than you can push you forward to reach new levels in your own play.

WuXian Suibian

This is the episode I’ve been waiting for you to watch since ep 1😭

Алта

If you had to choose, which twin you related to more who would it be and why?

TW

Kageyama’s line in the end “I’m glad I came here too” after seeing Atsumu’s crazy set is a direct response to Hinata’s line when he said the same thing after hearing Hoshiumi’s interview (ep 12 I think). You can even see coach Ukai, who used to be a setter, clapping after seeing Atsumu’s set, it was really impressive.

Thank you J&J for blessing us with Haikyuu Thursdays! At the 36:45 mark when the narrator is saying, "The biggest blessing that Atsumu has isn't his physique or his various talents. It's actually Osamu." I read in an article that Furudate-sensei originally didn't intend to make Astumu be a twin until after he completed writing the Youth Camp Arc. To find out that if Osamu didn't exist, Astumu would've actually been different the interactions we had with them both wouldn't have existed. Growing up together and sharing similarities, how do you think your life would've differed if you weren't twins and one was older than the other?
