AOT 1x13 Reaction!!

Comments

If I'm correct, Annie saving Jean was an additional few frames added in on the Bluray version of this show. The TV version was very rushed and some details like facial expressions were off because of the very limited they had to pump the episodes out. This applies throughout all 4 seasons, even more so for season 4 after Mappa took over. You'll find lots of comparison videos on YouTube comparing the differences of the Bluray VS TV versions. I hope they switch to a site like Crunchyroll that has the bluray version because there are very noticeable differences in some parts. Another moment in this episode other than Annie saving Jean was when Jean fumbled with the ODM gear trying to escape after Marco saved him. There shouldn't be a still frame looking at the rooftops because in the bluray version it actually shows him fumble and fall over. Also the purple coloured debri when eren was walking, Rico firing the smoke gun with a wooden wall behind her which shouldn't be there, and the shot transitioning to the fire after seeing Annie should be animated not a still. Edit: I'm not actually sure what sites have the bluray version because it looks like they're watching on crunchyroll which means they have the wrong version as well. Maybe Funimation might have the right version.

Jay

Since when was annie saving jean removed from the episode. I noticed that on crunchyroll too. It doesn't show her kicking it and skateboarding it. Weird

david ammerman

There is a distinct detail that can be used to tell you two a part

Andrew F

That scene is haunting

Andry

That's not really true, the Japanese voice actors are pronouncing the names correctly with Japanese accents. That's just how you pronounce sounds with their accent. Meanwhile, the dub is saying "Reinah" with an American accent which is wrong. It's like an American speaker calling a British guy named Mark "Mohk" just because that's how you pronounce the name with a British accent. Anyways, I guess there's no need to rant about this lol

Balanatro42

Same

Janica San Gabriel

WHERE IS IT JARED WHERE IS IT JORDAN IM GOING THROUGH WITHDRAWLS OVER HERE MAH BOYS.

Adam Espinosa

Yes he wanted to himself, but he did have to do it to show that he is not an enemy. But yes i know its a stretch xd

KornSirkel

oh I see.. thanks everyone for the info 🥺 I hope there aren't more scenes cut in the future reactions

its_aliza

To clarify for Jared and Jordan: The production schedule for many anime is often under a massive time crunch and so sometimes animation and production is rushed, the biggest example in AoT is this episode, where many still images were used in place of small cutscenes they weren't able to animate in time. The Blu-Ray release has all these scenes as well as general animation improvements/polish to it, although the subtitles are sometimes a little odd.

Hippopi

Agree with the Atlas thing, but I'd disagree with Eren being forced to do it by the higher ups to prove his innocence. After all, it was Armin's idea and plan, and Eren willingly carried it out. We saw in the previous episode that Eren knew and decided his role was to become a symbol of hope for humanity. The difference between Eren and Atlas is that Eren chose to shoulder the burden of the world - aka humanity - and does so to strive for freedom itself.

Hippopi

Stop spamming for shoutouts 🤨

Hippopi

I know right? The voice acting, the BGM, it just evokes all the emotions as if you're always watching it for the first time.. 🥲🤧

nikki

omg same... I was like why am I crying again when I know it's going to happen 😅😅

Elyshia Cross

I've probably watched this episode more than the others and that moment when Eren plugged the hole screaming "tatakae (fight)" with that BGM, still has the same effects on me no matter how many times I rewatch it!!! JUST GOOSEBUMPS ALL OVER MY BODY!!!! And Riko firing the smoke signal teary eyed saying "Everyone... you did not die in vain!"... always tugs my heartstrings!!!! Man, this is one of my most favorite episodes from Season 1 no doubt!!!!! 😭

nikki

I would love to hear some predictions you guys think the story will unfold going forward and into the next seasons. Also who are your current top 3 favorite characters. Love the reactions.

Blake

No its just the Japanese accent unable to correctly pronounce certain names. There's a few names that they pronounce with annunciations that aren't correct to the original language pronunciation. It's just that the voice actors cannot properly pronounce the names with their accents. Idc tho the og voice actors are just *chefs kiss*

Lauren Crawford

It wasn't Eren's foot that got Mitabi. The little titan in the background of that scene had been lead away from Eren at that point.

Lauren Crawford

Yes that was Ian saving the guy from the titans mouth, and Mitabi was the one crushed by one of the titans hand

KornSirkel

I love the symbolism of Eren being like Atlas from greek mythology, the same way the titan Atlas carries the whole world on his shoulders, so does Eren in a way carrying the boulder to stop the world from ending Also Atlas was forced to do this by the "higher ups" as punishment for his betrayal, same as Eren was "forced" to by his higher ups to prove his innocense

KornSirkel

Hey, just signed up for the Otaku Gold, very excited to watch the reactions in the coming months. Keep up the good work! And i think you guys should look into finding and watching the Blu Ray version. As its clears up some scene errors (e.g when the titan that was about to eat Jeanjust gets cut out of a shot of Annies face, purple debree when Eren takes a step with the boulder) and generaly makes the show look and feel better

KornSirkel

starting tomorrow for otaku gold tier members

Ashley K

When is this 6 eps per week updatin?

Covey

Crunchyroll for some reason hasn't updated the version to the BluRay one, they used the one that was released in Japan on TV back when it was first aired - the studio was under massive time crunches and so there are some errors or cut scenes that they didn't get to animate in time.

Hippopi

Instead of reminding them about specific episodes, I think it's best to reiterate the rule: Keep watching until you see the To Be Continued screen.

Hippopi

The epidemic the coroner was referring to was one that could be caused by the multitude of corpses. This is a time without electricity or proper filtration/plumbing - particularly in the outer walls. It's implied they probably don't have antibiotics or the ability to sterilize large areas.

Hippopi

Eren carrying that boulder is such an iconic and powerful image. Obviously it's a nod to Atlas from Greek mythology, who was a titan condemned to hold up the heavens or sky for eternity - sculptures and other artistic works commonly show him holding up the Earth like Eren carries the boulder. It symbolises Eren carrying the burden of humanity's hopes, lives and dreams. Of Eren taking on the weight of the world, of carrying an unimaginable burden on his shoulders and forcing himself to move forward for humanity's freedom. The level of determination that Eren has is incredible and the fact that he's only 15 is something that can't be understated.

Hippopi

Hi! New member here!!!🫶🏻 can i get some shoutout please.

The fact that literally ALL these questions are easily answerable if you just watch....god i love this anime lol

Kiyoshi Kenshin

Use most of humanity as fodder to keep the titans at bay while the rest builds?

Hippopi

At this point of the story there's a lot of questions to ask like, Where did the tians come from? What's in the basement? Where's Erens Dad? Or world building questions like....... the story mentions 100 Years of Peace. What was life before peace? The story's setting seems to be similar to medieval times which fight with horses and cannons. How Do you build walls that high with only primitive tools which seems to cross vast grass lands? How do you start building walls from scratch if titans are eating you?

Kiro Mitt

I thought it was just me!

Kel

In the short time we spent with him, I came to respect and appreciate Ian so much. I was gutted when he died.

Kel

Same. I always get chills in that moment.

Kel

When Eren put the boulder in and Armi screamed “Go Eren”, a tear was brought to my eye. Chills. I love these characters so much. And Marco…..nooo

Kia

they said they watch the dub on their own time

Bianca 🎀

but they're watching sub

Gatha Naranath

I was very careful?? i worded it many times. It doesn't give any spoilers

Gatha Naranath

Yeah, I was quite puzzled seeing the strange differences in the version they're watching. Also, the rocks Titan Eren kicked up were purple? (another production issue likely)

Kiyoshi Kenshin

I'm going to say this now if nobody else has said it since soon you guys are going to start making breakneck progress on the series, but after watching Season 1, I recommend watching the AoT OVAs 1-5 before Season 2 (OVAs are basically special episodes that take place sometime during the run of the main series). If nothing else, I specifically recommend watching Ilse's Notebook (OVA 1) which is crucial to the main plot, as well as No Regrets Part 1 and 2 (OVA 4-5) which is a sort of spin-off that tells a story from Levi's past (highly recommend this one as you are able to sympathize with Levi's character a lot more). OVAs 2-3 are side stories that take place during the 104th Scouts' Military training, and they're alright but they don't really add much besides being some fun little side stories. I apologize if what I said was a little confusing, but if it was, here's a link to a viewing guide for the series that makes it easy to understand via a graphic. It is also colour coded as to what parts as essential viewings and what parts are optional https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/jbsovj/attack_on_titan_viewing_order_guide_2020_edition/ Oh, and while this won't apply until a month or so later since it's a lot later in the series, there's a very interesting post-credits scene at Episode 49 (Final episode of Season 3, Part 1) that not many reactors catch. Please do remember this comment when you guys get to that point in the series because it's quite interesting! As always thank you guys for the reactions and I might sign up for that Gold tier!

Kiyoshi Kenshin

As a patreon member of their BTS acct, my recommendation is to try signing up/ upgrading first to gold after you are able to. If you cant or it says “no slots”, DM them to let them know, Im sure they will respond as soon as they can 🙏🏻 I did that and was able to upgrade on the other acct 💜

After watching episodes 11-13 straight: - Do you know you both will make excellent emergency news anchors fr 😂 + the editing. Top-notch *chefs kiss* - Im a huge fan of your discussions at the start of some episodes when you reflect on past ones, so I wana ask if this will continue in the new schedule of 6 AOT eps per week, because Im mindful that recording and editing takes alot of time. - The image of Eren's body infused with veins and muscles at the nape of that Titan is...a sight to behold. Someone in a past episode mentioned Eren as a "Shredded Titan" 🤣 another sight to behold. Excellent ones so far, looking forward to next week! 💜🙏💜🙏💜

Lynn #7

By the way the dub's pronunciation of Reiner is wrong, it should be pronounced with the 'r'. It reminds me of the Avatar movie when I hear Reinah lol. They also do this with a few other things like Wall Maria I think? It's like they're trying to copy a Japanese accent in a way that doesn't make sense for a speaker with an American accent

Balanatro42

I believe the version they're watching is the unpolished scene that came about as a production error. The blu-ray version fixed it but it seems like they aren't watching that version.

Kiyoshi Kenshin

new subscriber here, I just wanted to comment that all these animes I started watching all in 2016 when I got into anime and it’s cool to rewatch all these with y’all and reminisce lol

maria

Great reaction like always! Thank you! I love it you try to understand each and every part of what they through at you. It will get much more complicated further on, so I hope you don't struggle too much. In my personal opinion, I don't mind at all you stopping the episode and discuss when you feel you need to. Oh and one thing they don't show in the anime, The body Annie is apologizing to when they are gathering the corpse is Mina, they seemed to spend some time with each other. Mina's top part of the head was bitten off by a titan, they couldn't show it in the anime. I can't wait to get to next week! Have a great time and take care :)

hiro ame

14:24 That was not Eren. It was another titan’s hand that squished Mitabi

konstanzzin

Mitabi is the guy who y'all thought got squished by Eren lol and Ian is the one who saved that soldier from the Titans mouth and got ate. Lil detail is how Mikasa sees that happen and it focuses on her. She had started to respect him immensely after seeing him have Eren's back. Also, he's the one who told Unwellman that she was worth 100 soldiers. They had a lil cool dynamic going on 🥹 RIP to the unsung hero Ian Dietrich 💯

Val

same.. I also commented the same thing because I don't want future episodes with cut scenes

its_aliza

Yes and its not Eren who squashed Mitabi

its_aliza

yes and also the scene where Armin mistakes Levi for Mikasa but then sees Mikasa is standing right beside him.. its also cut

its_aliza

Ancient Greek philosopher, Aristotle, divides friendship into three categories: -Friends for pleasure (those you may dine with or play a sport with). -Friends for benefit (usually bound by mutual work like a colleague or neighbor) -True friends (true friends are mirrors to each other, a single soul dwelling in two bodies) Aristotle says, “In poverty and other misfortunes of life, true friends are a sure refuge.” AOT’s friendships on screen keep us loving and rooting for characters. AOT’s friendships leave us grateful for our own true friends and/or longing for a true friend of our own. This episode we see: Mikasa mirroring devotion and protection back to Eren, Armin mirroring dreams beyond the walls and loyalty back to Eren, Reiner mirroring bravery and perseverance to Annie as she weeps, Jean remembering Marco’s mirror of encouragement, patience, and grace…so many heart-gripping examples of refuge found in true friendship amidst AOT’s world of pain, chaos, bleakness, and struggle. Masterful storytelling. Question: If given the choice, would you choose many less-deep friendships with a large, varied collection of people or deep connections with a select few? Are you a person with many friends or few and why? Thanks, Jared and Jordan for gifting three eps today. You guys continue to make me smile with certain off-handed, future-plot-related comments (I’ll say no more lol). Looking forward to your new Mon-Sat schedule.

antionette7

Hey guys! awesome reaction. I believe there was a production issue in this episode (outsourced clip didn't arrive back in time) as 1 part of the episode (maybe 2 ...?) was cut out a bit. It was at 7 min 11 sec that they cut out where Annie saves Jean heres the actual clip/gif for it: http://i.imgur.com/na3UhJr.gif heres the video too on yt: https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&ved=2ahUKEwjR2bP_sOaEAxWoGzQIHXVEAeIQz40FegQIDhAK&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DCmzLR9VOjGQ&usg=AOvVaw2qeP8bBUjwH4Gza81rN1zx&opi=89978449

Tatakaila

Wait why was the scene cut where Annie was kicking the titan who was about to eat Jean?

its_aliza

Do I have the time to watch one AoT episode a day, plus the Death Note shows.... no... but am I still really tempted to get the next teir.... yes. haha. This patron is going to kill my productivity, but at least it will be in a fun way. :p

Desdemona

right!

Bianca 🎀

Nah I have watched the sub version 20+ times and I also noticed it was missing. Why is the camera zoomed on Annie's face and don't they show her saving Jean??? This is the first and only time I have seen that scene cut I immediately went to the comments

Please be more careful with questions. You might accidentally give spoilers

Kenken

The whole convo with Annie and Reiner. So much depth went into this show it is so unreal

amir faraj

I feel like you guys reached a point where you finally get to dive deeper into the Survey Corps. I've seen this show many times and the Survey Corps just makes this already of an amazing and well written story so much better. The respect you will gain for them is insane. A question - What do you think so far about the characters, including Levi, Erwin and Hanji if u remember her. And do you have somewhat of a favorite character? If not that's fine since it's early on in the show and hard to decide. Me personally Armin became my favorite character in episode 10 and stayed my favorite forever. All throughout the whatever 90 episodes there are of this show. And the 4 whole seasons. And i'm so excited for you guys to see his amazing potential in future episodes.

Gatha Naranath

Fun Fact: The AOT world is based on a German town ("Nördlingen") which also has walls (not 50 meters high, they are about 4m tall). I actually live near it and it is a really beautiful town and I see many similarities, for example the buildings. In fact, many names in Aot are German (e.g Hannes, or Reiner Braun) It's based in Germany because that's the way Japanese people often imagine medieval times. Also, Germany has had a friendship with Japan since WW2 At the beginning of the opening you can hear a voice shouting "Seid ihr das Essen? Nein, wir sind die Jäger" which basically translates to "Are you the food? No, we are the hunters". (Eren Jäger -> Eren "hunter"). Also, there are actually 2 soundtracks in AOT completely in German. Other soundtracks have a small part German. So don't worry about mispronouncing names, German is hard!😂😂 English is not my native language so excuse me for mistakes! Have Fun and enjoy this Masterpiece !!!

Kleiinstadt

That titan in the background killed Mitabi in the scene you watched repeatedly. It noticed Mitabi when it turned its head and then squashed him with its hand. His hand is visible for a brief moment.

bedifferent

I’m so glad that you guys are watching the dub version as well because as i’m watching the sub version with you guys, i’m noticing there’s a few scenes missing from the sub that they have in dub. A scene was cut right after 8:40 & right after 23:30 🤨

Bianca 🎀

Guys you need to get used to the cliffhangers, that's just part of the anime genre, and specially on AoT. It's definitely a way for the series to succeed and to get viewers engaged and wanting more and more. So just binge watch it and the cliffhangers will feel like fun eventually.

Angélica Hernández

Tbh with you guys, I don’t remember the last time an episode DIDNT have a cliffhanger lmaooo

MangoJuice

When you say they're limited spots for Otaku gold, how does that work? How many spots are there? I am just wondering if I'll still be able to get in if I wait a week or two.

Goatchis

get used to levi being a shit talker! he isn't afraid to say what people don't want to hear and is rarely nice about it either. and that doesn't detract from his amazing character

uchenna

armin screaming, eren’s “tatakae” and call your name as the soundtrack makes me cry every single time

Lizi Monton

I watch these while working and let me tell you, this episode distracted me so much and I'm behind now 🤣 I am excited for y'all to get to know the survey corps better soon, Levi and Erwin and everyone else. How do you feel about them capturing titans to study? Any predictions on what they might find out? also why do the Titans eat people if they don't digest them? Hmmm

fox

The worry of an epidemic was due to the amount of dead bodies in such a small area. Which is why they burned them. The vomit was just a matter of not being able to identify the bodies.

Here we go!!! 🙂🙃

watch this be an accident 😭
