POTATO CHIPS!? | Death Note - Ep. 8 Reaction!

Comments

I believe the rule about how someone using the book could shorten their own life span means you might die as a repercussion of your actions. Say Light is supposed to live till he’s 70, if he gets caught and sentenced to death he will definitely die before he is 70, all because he used the death note. I suppose the opposite is true as well, he could have been fated to die in a car accident or robbery but kills the person (with the death note) who was supposed to later get Light killed. In that scenario he would have lengthened his lifespan. So basically the death note effects more then just it’s targets life span, but there is no way to reliably predict these long term side effects. Especially since you can’t really know when people are suppose to die anyway.

That matcha (green tea) ice cream LOL and Daddy Yagami got 3 scoops too! Aizawa wanted that ice-cream LMAO Also some trivia idk if anyone mentioned it but the Yamanote line Raye took before dying goes on and on in cercles that's why Light chose that specific line so Raye could stay on it as long as he needed but also it makes it all the more suspicious that he just stayed on that line so long

I think I remember some background info about the camera situation - Light's room had the most cameras out of any room, by a decent margin. As you said, the little sister would almost immediately be written off as a suspect by L since she shows no considerable signs of high intelligence. As L said in this episode, "The Yagami household is almost too clean" - the same can be said for L's opinion of Light: He's too perfect, too above reproach, too seemingly innocent. Like recognises like, and L's genius mind can recognise someone like himself; another genius who would be incapable of being so boring an individual that he is everything society praises.

Hippopi

I've always viewed Light and L as sort of platonic soulmates - they stand above and isolated from everyone around them due to their genius, and are in turn the only ones capable of truly understanding each other. It just happens that the existence of the Death Note means they're rivals/enemies instead of being able to truly become friends.

Hippopi

Here’s what makes Death Note a great piece of fiction: it’s all grounded in rules. The first episodes establish immutable rules on how the death note works. They even show these rules between scenes as a handshake with the viewer. Everything light does with the Death Note across the series comes out of these very rules. Some shows suffer from twisting or making up stuff in later episodes to move the narrative a certain way. Death Note never deviates. Awesome reaction as always :) came from YouTube and love the content and commentary!

Light only did the 1h per killing thing for a while, not continuously. He started scheduling deaths at random times in advance as it was more beneficial for him. He bought the bag of chips and the camera and put it inside. brought it home to the kitchen and stored it only to then pick it up because he knew nobody would eat it specially when his sister thinks it will get you fat. Plus just because he's being watched and nobody is dying doesn't mean he's automatically more suspicious lol. Like you said, he scheduled some deaths in advance so there's no need to stress. He did the tv thing to confuse L even more, not because he believed that would make him innocent. The episode isn't flawed you just need to consider how Light thinks. This is fun for him, not everything he's doing is to make him 100% innocent because that's not what he wants. He wants to get closer to L eventually otherwise he will never be able to get to him.

🤣🤣 "I'll take a potato chip *gasp *gasp AND EAT IT

Just watched episodes 7&8! Amazing as always with “gutted” 😣 and then “potato chips” 😂 My questions are: 1. Since you now know that Naomi was telling Light the truth about her working with L before on a previous case (which L confirmed it in episode 8), what do you think Naomi meant when she told Light, “You remind me of L. I felt you two were similiar.” What similarities do you see between Light and L so far? 2. L’s decision to secretly set up wiretaps and surveillance cameras in 2 households was based on a 5% possibility that Kira is one of them. Would you have taken that risk knowing that if exposed, the entire team might be fired and subjected to legal issues? The next episode is…🤐🤯🤐🤯 😂😂😂 love you guys 💜🙏🏻💜🙏🏻

There is a spin of novel about the case Naomi worked on with L. Death Note Another Note: The Los Angeles BB Murder Cases Shinigami tend to have addictive personalities. Ryuk mentioned that a lot of them gamble, Ryuk has apples, just a funny quirk

Rhast

Nope. At that time there are no cameras. He just prepare the clips for such situations, like the one with Ray's fiancee.

József Soltész

I can perform that scene perfectly and my cousin will still ask me to do it every so often to this day

Silver

100% Agree 🤣

As always you two and you're reactions are AMAZING. The line I TAKE A POTATO CHIP AND EAT IT will always be one of my favorite anime lines 🤣 Do you think if you were in Chief Yagami's position and you found out your family was under suspicion you would be willing to let your house be filled with cameras and wire tapes? Do you think Light has completely lost sight of his original desire to make the world a better place or do you think he feels like he is still following that mission? Do you agree with L that everything at the Chiefs house seemed TOO NORMAL to be considered real? I myself always felt like Light was acting odd during this episode. Like he was over-doing the basic stereotypes of what a teenage boy would be doing. 🤣 maybe it's just me. Love you guys and can't wait for more anime episodes. 💜🤍🖤

When Ryuk says Light is good with his hands, it shows him prepping and clipping the notes for the chip bag but not how everything is finished. It foreshadows that he’s ambidextrous and able to add the names while writing his equations 😂

that whole potato chip scene...death note came out in 2006. I watched it for the first time 14 years ago. And it still cracks me up to this day 😭😭

Gatha Naranath

I know this. They just didn't show us the how, like they did with the secret hiding spot and safety mechanism for the Note.

József Soltész

That make sense if he still kills in random times. But as I mentioned, he prepared forward for 3 weeks in case of anything happens. And he started killing 1 criminal in every hour after L found out Kira should be a student. Killing the freshly shown criminals instantly throws away the 1/h schedule and shows L at what times he is "working". What leads he back to the idea, Kira is a student.

József Soltész

I have a question about Ryuk for you guys. I don't know if anyone asked it yet. What do you think about Ryuk's motives? You've been saying Light has done some evil things, but isn't this all because of Ryuk? Ryuk was bored and threw his Death Note to the human realm in with the goal of finding a human who would enterain him by killing others. Light was just a bright and proper student before he picked up the Death Note. Isn't Ryuk the one who turned Light into Kira? And Ryuk does not need any food as a Shinigami, Light confirms that right before he "suggests" Ryuk to look for the camera's. Ryuk said he was impartial, but he does help Light just to eat apples. Which increases Light's chances of getting away again. Is Ryuk still impartial if he wants Light to have one win in the game, just so he can eat an apple? Do you think this tipped the scale and Ryuk somehow supports Light? Or is he still impartial but selfish?

Selina

Facts xD

top 10 dramatic anime potato chip eating moments

C Mc

Light mentioned that he used Ryuk’s information and his own prior preparation to circumvent L’s bugging the house. It shows all the camera placement when Ryuk tells him that there are 64 cameras so it appears that he angles the chip bag LED TV so it’s not seen while he’s supposedly studying. His computer is turned off and he eliminates the evidence when he tosses the garbage. 🤷‍♀️😂

Cheryl Lambert

Sure the camera thing is a little flaw, but to defend it a bit the camera quality back then was trash compared to now. The 2 kills does make sense though. The scheduled deaths were criminals from prison who are known. But they know he needs to see the face and know the name, so someone who did a crime on that day couldn’t have been killed by light . In his small Device he had turned on the news channel, where reports are normal, the 2 criminals probably got caught on that day or something. So Kira would have to watch tv to find out about these 2 criminals. I hope my sentences make sense. Feel free to respond than we can analyze together

Yagami

These are just my own speculations and analysis ( which I might be completely wrong on 😂) I think it was necessary for Light to kill someone in real-time because L suspects that Kira can control the time of death. Since Kira can control time of death it's futile to wait to kill a freshly announced criminal. For Light to prove his “innocence” the freshly announced criminals need to die of heart attack instantly while it seems like Light doesn't have any information about those exact criminals (since L proved Kira needs a name and face to kill in episode 2). As for hiding the tv in a bag of chips, I think Light could have strategically sealed up the bag of chips after placing the small tv to make it look like it hasn’t been open. For all we know, Light could have picked that bag of potato chips because they could be the brand of chips that ONLY he likes to eat in his family. That particular bag of chips is also placed behind all the other chip bags. Lastly, I can only assume that Ryuk may have given Light a detailed description of location of all 64 cameras off-screen. Based on the detailed description Light took a risk and placed the bag of chips in a blind spot (based on the wiretaps screen L is looking at ). Sorry for the long reply 🙏

Back in the first episode when you were first reading about the series on wikipedia, you noted that Death Note was a manga which received an anime adaptation and a light novel. Well the light novel actually tells the story of the Los Angeles BB Murder Cases, that L mentioned when hearing of Naomi's disappearance. Naomi Misora serves as the protagonist of this story and helps L solve the case. It's a very solid mystery book that acts as supplemental content to the main series. You also seem to have a lot of respect for the writing of this series and the author. You might be interested to know that the writing of Death Note is credited to Tsugumi Ohba, which is merely a pen name, and the real identity of Death Note's author is a closely guarded secret in the industry. Very few people know for sure who they are, and the ones who do aren't telling. Just some things I thought you'd find interesting.

Zugzwang

I personaly don't like this episode, because it has logical flaws (in my opinion) and it bothers me. There is no Spoiler in the following, but a lot of question :) How he hid the tv in the Chips bag? If they investigate him even for a few days, how he manages to continue the killing, with this little trick? Does he bought multiple tv-s? Does he perepared multiple bags with a tv in it? How there's not an wievingangle from the 64 cameras, what sees in to the bag, or just to notice the light, what the tv is emitting? If he sheduled for three weeks forward the deaths, why was a need to kill the freshly anounced criminals? Did he always killed the fresh ones immidiately? If yes, L should have notice the time whenn more deaths happens. Just like he did with the "Kira should be a student" discovery. But because of this discovery, Light changed the way he uses the DN in episode 3, and started to shedule the deaths, 1/h. Thats why I think the logic behind this episode has flaw, becouse he probably continued this 1/h shedule. Thank you for putting my earlyer comment in to your reaction, I feel really Honoured :) My name is the Hungarian version of Joseph. So pronounce it so.

József Soltész

Watari is so precious! I need him to give me some matcha ice cream lol

You guys HAVE to take 2 minutes to rewatch the potato chip scene in the English dub. It's an iconic meme.
