"Strip" Officer Lawrence snarled as he sat on the other side of the desk.
The younger police officer didn't seem to be as interested in humiliating me as the older one did, but after seeing Tucker, I didn't care what they did to me.
As embarrassed as I felt, my mind was focused only on Tucker. I unzipped my jacket, dropped it onto the floor next to me and smirked at Officer Lawrence.
"Let's try that again" he hissed, "fold it over the chair".
I wasn't going to give him the satisfaction of seeing me angry. I grabbed the jacket, folded it over the chair and shrugged at him.
"Gown" he nodded, and I knew that underneath the hospital gown, only my underwear would remain.
With a lump in my throat, I reached behind my back and untied the blue paper gown, a moment later I lay it over my jacket and stood in my boxer briefs.
"Hurry it up" Officer Lawrence spat, "there's a nice little cell with your name on it".
This was Dustin's fault entirely. Every bad thing in my life right now was because of Dustin, but the best thing in my life right now, was also because of Dustin. Still, my burning hatred didn't falter as I slid my underwear down my legs and added it to my pile of clothing.
"Hands on your head, spin slowly around until you're facing us again" Lawrence ordered, and I could see his eyes stopping on my crotch.
I knew my cheeks were red. I hated being naked in front of anybody, let alone two strangers, one of whom spent most of the journey ridiculing gay people. I couldn't let the older man win though, and so I stood up straight and turned around.
"Now turn back around and bend over, spread your cheeks. I know what you gays are like" he spat, a tone of disgust in his voice.
My head was beginning to pound once more now that the effects of the hospital painkillers were wearing off. I turned around reluctantly and followed the man's orders, pulling my ass cheeks apart as he shone his torch at me.
"Now don't get excited" Lawrence scoffed, "there's only one fairy in this room".
I gritted my teeth as I remained in place, exposing myself in the worst possible way. I knew that Officer Lawrence was toying with me, I could hear it in his voice, but even now, Dustin was still my main enemy.
I heard footsteps behind me and a moment later, a set of grey sweatpants and a dull white t-shirt fell to the floor in front of me.
"Get dressed, you're making me sick" Lawrence growled, and I didn't wait around.
I was led from the room by both police officers, my bare feet smacking off the cold tiled floor until I found myself thrown into a small, miserable cell. I should have been angry, or sad, or some other negative feeling, but Tucker had come looking for me, and that's all I could think about as I sat down on the thin blue mattress and held my knees against my chest.
It had been hours since I'd been left there. What was supposed to happen now? I'd never been to jail before, and so I had no idea how it worked. Would I have to go to court? Would I eventually go to prison? The longer I sat there, the more I focused on what Dustin had potentially caused.
My mind began to wander further. Why hadn't my mom stopped him? Regardless of whether she only caught me hitting him, surely the fact that he smashed a vase across my head meant something. If my dad was still alive, none of this shit would have happened.
I rubbed my eyes, I couldn't get upset, not when Lawrence was likely watching me through the camera in the corner.
The lock sounded in the door, and a moment later the young officer stepped inside.
"Your dad dropped the charges, let's go" he said sternly.
"He's not my dad" I hissed back, getting to my feet and walking toward him.
Instead of stepping out of the way, the young man glanced back out the door and closed it.
"Listen kid" he whispered, taking me by the shoulders, "I know what you're going through. Truly, I do, but lashing out like that is only going to get you in trouble. Now hurry up, your ride is here".
There was something soft about the way the police officer spoke to me. It wasn't just a telling off, he sounded genuinely concerned. I nodded and followed him from the cell. I didn't know exactly what I'd say to Dustin, I didn't have anything to say to him, and the idea of the journey home with him made me reel.
"Just sign here" the officer said, "and keep the clothes".
I signed, took my few belongings and walked toward the door.
"Jayden" the officer called as I scanned the rainy parking lot for Dustin's truck, I turned back to him and he nodded across the room.
Tucker sat in one of the plastic chairs and nodded at me with a smile.
"So did you join any gangs on the inside?" He asked me, standing up as my heart swelled with delight.
"Yeah" I nodded, "got some gang tats too".
The two of us simply stared at each other for a moment until the young police officer cleared his throat.
"Well are you two gonna' kiss or just stand there gawping at each other?" He smirked, and walked away.
I rushed toward him, wrapping my arms around his neck as he wrapped his around my waist and we embraced passionately once again. It was a feeling like no other. It was worth it now, everything was worth it. Hitting Dustin, him hitting me, the hospital, the strip search, the cell, it was all worth it now.
"You need a shower" Tucker smiled as he held me, "you smell like a hospital, and a jail".
"Could be worse" I shrugged, still holding him, "I could smell like" I sniffed his chest, "engine oil, break fluid and..." I sniffed again, "sweat".
"Oh yeah, sorry" he nodded, "I'll make sure I'm not working the next time you decide to get arrested".
The two of us laughed as we walked out of the police station and into the rain.
"Fuck" I gasped, standing on jagged rock as we walked down the steps.
Tucker turned around, glanced down at my bare feet and scooped me into his arms with apparent ease. God, I loved him.
By the time we reached his truck, we were both soaked through. He slid me into the passenger seat and crawled in through the driver side.
"So" he grinned, "I'm pretty hungry, and you look like you've just gotten out of jail".
"I have just gotten out of jail" I laughed.
"Fancy cooking?" He asked, as we pulled out of the parking lot, "or would you rather I do all the hard work while you put your poor little feet up", he added, reaching down and playfully grabbing my ankle.
"Get off" I laughed, and sat back. "but I don't think your dad or my mom are going to be too happy if we walk back in together" I sighed, staring out the rain soaked window and feeling an overwhelming sense of self pity.
"Yeah" Tucker agreed, "so I guess you'll just have to come and stay with me".
My eyes widened and my neck nearly snapped as I turned to look at him. Was he serious? Surely he couldn't be. He lived at home with his own mom, and I was pretty sure he had a whole heap of little siblings too. It was a joke, it had to be.
"I wish" I half laughed, gauging his reaction, and he shrugged.
"Well my dad will probably kill both of us if I take you back to yours, so it's either my place or I'll drop you off under that bridge over there and you can stand around that burning barrel".
"You're serious?" I asked, open mouthed, "I... I can stay at yours?"
"If you don't mind the chaos, the mess, the screaming kids, the dogs, the dog hair, my mom telling you how cute you are, oh and you'll have to actually drag your little ass out and work as well".
I felt my eyes fill with tears as Tucker spoke so casually.
"It..." I sniffled and wiped my eyes, and Tucker glanced at me like I'd grown a second head. "It sounds amazing" I half laughed, half cried.
"If you say so" he chuckled, and we began our journey back to Tucker's.
The journey took over an hour before the city disappeared behind us and we reached the vast, cloudy countryside. There was something almost rebellious about the whole thing. I'd always been a good boy, always followed the rules, listened to my parents, done what I was told, and now here I was, crossing state lines after being arrested only hours prior. My heart gave a little jump as I smiled to myself.
"Do you wanna' call your mom?" Tucker asked, as he watched the road ahead.
"Nah" I replied, "not today".
By the time we reached the long dirt road leading to Tucker's house, the rain had become even stronger.
"Get used to it" Tucker smirked, "all it does is rain here".
"I don't mind" I told him honestly, "I like the rain".
Tucker's hand landed on my knee and he squeezed gently.
"You sure are a strange young man, Jayden" he grinned, "wait here, I'll be back in a minute".
I watched as the stunningly handsome young man got out of the truck and ran toward the house. It was quite big, but also quite dated. Many parts of it looked as though they were in desperate need of repair, but there was nothing to compare it to considering it seemed to be the only house for miles.
Across the wet, muddy yard, a large beaten up barn stood tall. It too looked old and dilapidated, and the entire place didn't seem to fit what I had expected.
I wasn't a snob by any means, and I'd have given my right arm to live in a place like this if it meant that I didn't have to live with Dustin, but Tucker had come across as pretty wealthy ever since I'd met him, and I had just assumed that he lived in a big, lavish house.
He ran out from the house and over to my side, opening the door as he shielded himself from the rain with his jacket.
"My shoes were too big" he called through the stormy weather, "but my brother's will fit".
"What?" I laughed, as he slid me around and began stuffing my feet into a pair of scuffed sneakers that actually fit quite well.
He pulled me from the truck, wrapping his strong arm around me and covering me with his jacket too.
"He's twelve by the way" he laughed as we ran toward the house.
The warmth of the house hit me immediately as we stepped inside. We'd been transported from the dreary weather and plunged into a cosy, warm home, and already I had fallen in love.
"It's not much" Tucker shrugged as he hung his jacket on an old wooden coat rail, "but we get by".
"It's amazing" I said in awe, staring around at the old wooden decor.
It was amazing. Everything about the place was amazing. The sound of a fire crackling in the background, the dim light, the rain battering the windows, the delicious scent of food cooking, it was wonderful.
"I guess my mom's already cooked. Come on, let's get this over with" he laughed, nudging me playfully.
"Wait" I said, grabbing his wrist as we approached one of the doors, and he turned back to me.
"Does your mom know?"
Tucker considered the question for a moment before shrugging, grabbing me by the arm and dragging me into a bustling kitchen.
The table in the centre was huge, and sat at least seven children. None of them seemed even remotely concerned that a stranger had just entered their house. A heavy set woman with an apron around her neck and two pots in her hand beamed over at us.
"Hey mom" Tucker said nonchalantly, reaching over a skinny, grubby looking red headed boy and grabbing a piece of chicken from his plate.
"Hey!" The boy barked, grabbing Tucker's forearm, and Tucker lifted him entirely from the bench and popped the chicken in his mouth.
"Hay is for horses" he smirked, and ruffled the kid's hair as he sat him back down.
"Mom, this is Jayden" he said, still chewing, and before I could even say hello, the jolly woman bound toward me and wrapped her arms tightly around me.
"Oh you poor thing, you're hurt!" She gasped, holding me by the arms and staring at my head with concern.
"Dad" Tucker mumbled and the woman's face turned bitter.
"Right" she nodded, "well, nothing a big bowl of stew won't fix, have a seat pet".
Once again, before I had a chance to speak, Tucker's mom was scooting me onto the bench, between the red headed boy that Tucker had man handled, and a blonde little girl who looked only a bit younger.
"Who are you?" She asked inquisitively, her brow lowered.
"Oh, I'm Jayden" I said, feeling rather intimidated by the tiny person.
"Are you Tucker's friend?" She pressed, as her mother returned and placed the most delicious looking meal I had ever seen in my life, down in front of me.
"Leave Jayden alone, Sophie" she said sternly, "he's tired".
"Oh it's really no problem" I smiled politely.
"Well if you're not tired now, pet" she beamed, holding my shoulders, "you will be once this lot have quizzed you".
Tucker sat down opposite me and gave me an apologetic look, but as I sat there in the chaotic kitchen, I couldn't have dreamed of a better place to be.
"So" Sophie piped again, "are you?"
"I... Uh... I guess –"
"He's my boyfriend, Soph" Tucker said simply, and shovelled a huge spoonful of stew into his mouth.
My eyes widened as his mom shuffled over to him, kissed him on the head and smiled warmly at me.
None of the children batted an eyelid, and as I sat there in shock, Tucker looked over at me, his beautiful eyes piercing me, and winked.
My heart melted just a little bit more.
