Sea witch Portia and the fisherman who came to her... well he def came to her. Portia and Edwin strike up an agreement, still not sure what exactly it is, maybe he wants more fish so he can make money to get out, or he's tired of being alone... idk, in exchange portia wants human stuff, human books, food, gossip... Eventually lines blur and while helping each other, they help themselves to each other.

I like the idea that there's a certain level of magic, like mermaids kiss saves a sailor from drowning... but its only fleeting. A kiss can make a human breath water, in trade it lets the mermaid better breath air. More than a kiss.... an exchange of something, whether it be blood, a promise, hair... activities, gets more. It's sort of like how a fisherman can steal a selkies coat they have to go on land, but in this, the fisherman would slowly change too. So trading/creating emotional/physical bonds brings change. Usually you have to be purposeful, to have a anticipitory use, but since Portia and Edwin begin seeing each other... spending a lot of time together, emotionally, physically, romantically bonding, Edwin begins to see the side effects. I think it'd be sped up by love or great feelings, so portia's like .... why is this happening so fast????? They take a break from each other, since technically their agreement is settled, only it still progresses... with no intention, there's no control. Eventually they have to admit their mutual feelings and all returns to normal 'ish'. these bonds let mermaids come out of the sea to live with their human spouse and vice versa, but it has to be sealed with a promise, a gift. Edwins been 'gifting' portia things for a while now, which is why he's feeling it more, so Portia gives him her earrings to make it even steven :)
