This episode ended up being a lot longer than I originally planned at 34 pages! But I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.

When writing the flashback, I wanted to show how the seeds of Jack's later transformation were already present in his relationship with Emily and their father. The family dynamics play a crucial role in shaping who Jack becomes as Jill, I think. I'm fascinated by how our past influences our ability to adapt to extreme circumstances!

Emily's attempt to help Jack comes from a place of love, but it's tainted by their father's influence. This interaction sets the stage for the guilt and determination that drive Emily's search for her brother! Of course, Jill's transformation isn't just physical - it's a complete rewiring of her identity. I think that's why her encounter with Emily is so jarring for both of them.

That scene was tough to write - I wanted to show how much Jack has changed, but also highlight the complex relationship he had with Emily. It's bittersweet to see who he used to be. I like the idea of explaining the Privilege Levels through Ryan's perspective. I'll keep that in mind for future episodes! But, basically... PL-0 is basically a prison cell. Bare concrete, no amenities, not even a proper toilet. Just a hole in the floor. It's designed to break spirits quickly. PL-1 adds basic comforts - a real bed, a toilet, maybe some books. PL-2 is where they start dangling carrots - nicer furnishings, a TV, better food. But it's all about control. PL-3 is the first taste of "freedom" - mingling with others, access to common areas. It's designed to create a sense of community among the captives, but it's still heavily monitored. PL-4 is the golden cage. Luxury suites, spa treatments, gourmet meals. But it comes at a price - total compliance and acceptance of their new identity. Usually only the companions get access to this. The whole system is meant to reward submission and punish resistance. It's a twisted form of operant conditioning, really.

Also a sobering reminder of all the physical changes that Jack has undergone, although the blue of those eyes remains constant, and has through everything, including all the cosmetic surgery forced on him as he has gradually transformed into Jill in both body and mind. As others have said, this is an important episode which adds significance to the narrative in terms of the entire Larson back story. You’re one hell of a writer, Emory.

The earlier interactions between Jack and Emily helped greatly to understand complexity of their relationship, the chip on Jack’s shoulder and mis steps that took place in Emily’s attempt to heal fractured communications in the family. It highlightsEmily’s kind nature and some of the new qualities arising in Jack as he became Jill.

As for Tiffany, Davis, what did you do your repulsively evil piece of human garbage? How many of the "Attritions" are you and Hutch responsible for? Muse Emory, I noticed you did grant a request to have Emily dressed in armor like Joan of arc. I was wondering...respectfully requesting if time permitting...if you can have Olivia, my very own Summer Chastity Crowe or Shunfen Xu explain the differences between the "Privilege Levels 0-4". Or better yet, Ryan...after becoming...just slightly...more adjusted.

Even as Jill didn't recognize his sister and took his anger out on Josie's “bodyguard” though in this case probably shouldn't be surprised if we know what goes on there!

2024-09-09 10:39:50 +0000 UTCThis chapter is interesting and important due to the perspectives of Emily and Jack based on Jack's early lifestyle living on the beach before Second Dawn. Emily and some extent their dad want to help Jack improve his lifestyle by going to law school like his sister, but Jack refused. Not helped, Jack has complicated relationship with his father from his perspective on he was treated by him after their mother died. Also, previous chapter gives this one much more emotional weight from Emily's perspective due how she tried to reach her brother but failed. Why does the last few pages have foreshadowing for Mr. Larson similar to Conner's fate?
