Another progress update (without any builds yet)

Finally made first steps working on long promised rain. Unfortunately, as you can see, it doesn’t look all that good and yet already takes quite a lot of FPS (going from 65 to 55 FPS on my 1060 6GB in FullHD). I’m not quite sure why, and really hoping things will improve later on.

What’s ready: rain drops on surfaces with a second layer (surprisingly expensive, possibly because of Extra FX pass; needs visual improvements too), rain drops in the air, rain shadow to get rid of rain drops under the car or bridges, dynamic traces from windscreen wiper.

What’s left to do: automatic dimming for certain materials, puddles, updated rain drops from interior view, splashes from cars, a couple of other particle systems. Also, of course, audio and physics extension. And, hopefully, also improving or rewriting those sad rain drops and figuring out what’s going on with performance. 

Thank you for all the support! Next update might take a bit longer, although I think I’ll release another set of fixes soon, without the rain for now though.

Oh, if there would be any 3D spectator models with animations, I’d try and make something so they would spawn procedurally, with LODs and everything. Couldn’t find anything like that yet though. As for rainbow, sure will try and add :)

Ilja, I found this: https://youtu.be/BHRdnbUqSIU It's 100% in game (I think). Then ... Maybe in the future, it will be possible to add animations to the Marshalls or spectators (moving flags like ACC but with better animation, cof..cof...) And another question. With mixed rain and sun, maybe the rainbow effect will appear? Thanks for all

looks good Ilja, it looks similar to rain in rfactor 2 and they are selling it with it :D I hope there won't be problem with rain inside the cockpit though :D

I really like the way it impacts the ground. Very realistic. Shame about the fps impact but that happens in most sims. Maybe you will work some more of your magic on it :)

Thank you! It’ll run in VR: I decided to use that second layer way instead of Extra FX-bound particles partially to make it work better with VR and triple screen. And rain drops are generated all around the camera instead of just being in front of it, to be visible in rear view mirrors and better work with triple and VR. :)

That looks awesome ! Certainly rains heavily :) Great to see the car being wet and the rain drops pouring over the car. I hope I will be able to run it in VR some day ! Amazing work !
