The reason the card game episode turned out to be retroactively important is that the final duel between the Emperor and Horus on several different levels, ranging from physical to metaphorical. Sure they swung their weapons at one another, but at the same time they had a deep discussion about their mutual failings. One of these was using cards of the Emperor's Tarot, a deck of psychoactive cards linked to the mind of the Emperor, which trained readers can use to, to an extent, divine the future. This is a less than absolute method of divination, but it works to an extent. Now, during their duel the Emperor and Horus used the meaning of the cards against one another in order to get the upper hand in their duel, meaning that it is absolute canon that the Emperor and Horus played a card game for the fate of the galaxy. Also, Pot of Greed (and all cards in its archetype) have faces that would be tagged with Ugly_Bastard on certain image websites. Even the Avatar of the Pot, who has the face of an UB but the body of... well, a Custodes.
