Great line from Diane Keaton as Kay: “I don’t hate you. I dread you.”

Note to people who have angered the Corleone family: avoid parades.

She was just too inexperienced to be thrown onto a set with top-tier actors like Pacino and Diane Keaton.

Yes, the kinder gentler Michael we see here is as jolting as the out-of-control Khaleesi in the universally hated ending of GOT, and for the same reason: we are never shown the character beginning to change, we’re just presented with someone we don’t recognize.

This film is to the first two Godfather films what the Hobbit trilogy is to Lord of the Rings. Coppola only agreed to make this one because somebody was going to make a third Godfather with or without him - which is exactly why Peter Jackson agreed to stretch The Hobbit into a trilogy, quickly and shabbily produced.
The absence of Robert Duvall as Tom Hayden is glaring. Instead we get a standard-issue lawyer at Michael’s side, with no discernible connection to the family. And we write off Duvall’s entire contribution to the Godfather films with an “oops Tom Hayden died” throwaway line. Duvall as Tom in G1 and G2 was a quiet presence that balanced Pacino’s seething anger. We could have used some of that balance here to counteract the new, scream-y version of Michael.
Meanwhile, Pacino and Diane Keaton (Kay) were just coming out of a bitterly ended real-life affair when they made this, and she almost didn’t sign on. Coppola wanted a love scene between them, and Keaton said she wouldn’t be in this film if that happened. Which, thank God, because Kay has a perfectly good non-murdery husband in this film.
The role of daughter Mary went to Coppola’s own daughter Sophia, who is only awful because she’s in the company of great actors and she’s overwhelmed. (Also, doing kissing scenes and flirting scenes with her dad as the director had to feel awkward as hell, and it shows. Eww.)
The first-cousins love story is creepy to most people, but Coppola (not the author of the books) wanted to add that story from his own ancestry, so we have a cringy love story as a key plot element. A reminder that even a creative genius like Francis Ford Coppola can make big mistakes when nobody says “no” to him.
There are some gorgeous set-pieces to be enjoyed here, but on the whole it comes across as a TV melodrama. There’s just no comparing the quality of the storytelling.
Take this as a warning about The Hobbit films, which like Godfather 3 are a mishmash of an author’s original material and some hastily assembled crap.

I wonder if I will hate the movie as much now as I did on release. I recall hating a LOT of the acting along with how they treated Michael's character. His arc from the original, into 2 and then 3 don't align. The Michael at the end of 2 had no real interest in being legitimate. Yes he said he was trying to do that but none of his actions really pointed to him changing at all. He also had ice in his veins in 1 & 2, and he was a total wimp in 3. Also his acting style changed. This was during the Pacino screams period where he had a screaming monologue in several movies.

That quotable line about pulling him back in is what Sal (I think that's his name) From Sopranos always does the impression of.

I should have known he was going to look it up. He literally did no more than 30 seconds after I posted my original comment lol!

This movie came out in 1990 while part 2 came out in 1974 so they didn't need to age him up. Probably explains why it was filmed better overall too.

To be able to tap into the "monster" to protect yourself and your family from the real monsters, is a necessary skill for all men to have. But if you can't cage it again, you will become the monster.

Sofia Coppola(Mary Corleone) always sounds like she's high🤣 Very mid actress, okei director. Not as good as her father, Francis. Who directed all the Godfather movies, "wonder" how she got the role😏

Annnd we're done! Well , first things first. Great reaction so far Sir! I actually found myself getting into the story. Now , as for "What did/do the fans think of it?" At odds mostly between all 3 versions of it. I know it was sorta a shit show making it on almost every level though. I am gonna do a bit of research before the full film goes up , so I will have some info tomorrow. Thanks so much for doing this one Sir. : ] Peace

Alright!!! Time for the Pt 1 to the end of the Corleone Saga! I have only seen this once , (the theatrical version) and do not remember much. And I have yet to watch the other 2 versions .( The Godfather Part III: Final Director's Cut (1991) · The Godfather Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone (2020) ) But , since it's you reacting Sir , I'm down for whatever. There have been a few films over the years I did not like the first time or two , and ended up liking later on. I hope this will be one of those. Ok , Checklist Time!! Edibles kickin in - Check - Fatty's rolled and ready - Check - Beer freezer cold - Check - Smokes and Zippo - Check. To quote Silvio Dante "Just when I thought I was out...They pull me back in!" Peace EDIT: Just started and found out this is the Coda version!!!!Now I'm really excited! Gonna have to do a bit of lookin online to find out the differences if I don't remember em. Coolsville!!! Peace
