DUNE 2021 FULL REACTION

DUNE 2021 FULL REACTION

Comments

100% Stargate got those from Dune. But yeah, same concept and same plot hole. Sound waves travel at the speed of sounds. The shield in Stargate also should have been sound proof.

Twiska Brand

They're like goa'uld personal shields 😄

Teth

As much as I love Dune, I'm not a big fan of this adaptation. Villeneuve's style is just too visually and emotionally minimalistic to do a Space Opera justice. The next part is much better, but I still prefer Lynch's version from the 80s. It's batshit insane and hardly accurate to the books, but it's an *experience* of cinema. It also does a better job introducing the story and the characters imo. I hope you'll consider watching the prequel minisieries Dune Prophecy. It was just six episodes and a really underrated character- and mystery-centered story that we don't see a lot of nowadays. It also gives a bit more context to the world.

Teth

Watch the old dune but read the book first

Alejandro Guerra

Book reader here, the worms produce the spice themselves. No worms, no spice.

Jeromy M

One of the best films ever, please hurry to Dune 2. Also, production budget was only 165 million. A lot but way less than most modern films...

DoomGummy

Had to use google translate and I bet it would sound even better, if I knew some mediterranean language, but it still hits the right spot.

Michal Kubán

Equally unsure as I also haven't read them. But I assumed it to be due to bedrock. Not all of the planet is desert, there would be areas where the foundation is mostly solid rock.

KrustyTheKlown

"What's the point of the shield if technology like that exists?" Arms race. Weapons advance to overcome defences and defences advance to overcome weapons. It's like asking why do bullet proof vests exist if armour piercing rounds are a thing. The shield is to protect against the majority of weapons but anti shield weapons exist. But it's still better than nothing. That dart wouldn't have worked if Leto was also wearing his physical battle armour. What happened is the dart was fired at ballistic speed but gradually slowed down once it hit the shield till it was slow enough to pass through. (The shields only stop objects going at a certain speed.) Same thing with the bombs dropped on the ships. Again, weapons designed to get around shields but people still wear shields to force the enemy to invest in more complex and expensive counter measures. If they didn't wear shields the enemy would have an easier time. Also, when they arrived at the city for the first time the head of security (white haired dude) said the large wall was to protect against sand storms and worms. So that is why the city is safe from worms. Finally, the book this was based off of was written in the 60s, so although it influenced pretty much every modern sci-fi, some basic real life tech is missing as it wasn't around/known by the common reader at the time. So no small computers and I believe in the lore robots were outlawed. Also some hard science details (hard by 60s standards) were overlooked. Such as the shields. If they didn't let object going at a certain speed though, then that would include sound waves but somehow everyone wearing a shield can still hear and be heard by people on the other side of the shield.

Sorry I was late watching this because of recent winter storm...I love this adaptation of Dune...For a long time the novel Dune was considered unfilmable for a long time due to its complex, sprawling plot, a vast number of characters with unusual names, massive set pieces required to depict its expansive settings, intricate political intrigue, and the difficulty of visually representing elements like the sandworms and the mystical aspects of the story, making it challenging to translate the book's depth into a cinematic experience...I always wondered why he chose not to include extraterrestrial life ln his work though

Lonnie Vannatter

this one was very interesting. definitely through us into the thick of things. strangely, it comes together quite well after the initial chaos of having NO idea what's going on. An expensive cast of actors. I'd also agree that i don't care for this Zendeya actress. She seems...average...i guess. Anyway, apparently there is at least a part two. looking forward to it :)

I know the spit thing is disgusting, but living in a desert where temps reach 140 degrees, any moisture that can produce water (whether through bodily fluids like sweat. spit, or tears) is super valuable. Giving up some of your moisture that you use to literally stay alive is a huge show of respect.

Denise Mattsen

Not sure as I didn't read the books, but maybe the worms don't come to the city because they thrive on spice? No spice at their city so sand worms stay away?

Denise Mattsen

New way to greet someone: Blessing their face with my body's moisture...😬

KrustyTheKlown

Gotta agree with Alyssa here. That Zendaya comment about her being "unpleasant" or whatever was odd. Up until that point, she'd barely even been in the movie, then after a couple of lines of dialog we get this out of left field comment with no context about how unpleasant she is. On the other hand, not surprised, with every MRLBOYD reaction there's at least 2 or 3 "observations" (almost always in his judgement of people/characters) that I disagree with. That's actually one of the reasons I watch him.

Carl Lyngholm

Man I miss 80s actions stars that actually appeared physically strong and knew actual martial arts and weren't built like a twink. Just saying.

Slimsycentaur37

I think a more positive reference for him would be Sicario lol arrival is ass

Slimsycentaur37

He mentioned upcoming films in a recent video letting us know about Dune and The Hobbit , as well as mentioning the Holiday's have put him a bit behind. I would say to play a bit of catch up with some recent uploads here. Monday's have been Marvel movies for a while w/the exception of The Godfather Films. Then TV shows ,SOA ,BCS and The Sopranos.(Tuesday , Wednesday , and Thursday) and another film on weekends. I hope that helps some. Any other questions , just ask. Between Mr. LBoyd , and others on here , most things can be easily answered. Peace

Dune Part 2 is a masterpiece and the defining movie of the sci-fi genre, cannot wait to see your reaction to it. Frank Herbert who wrote Dune (back in 1965) has six mainline books in the Dune series all worth a read, his son Brian wrote some books later on, those are less important. Important to mention that Star Wars is heavily inspired by Dune, so that might be why you are quick to draw so many connections. Also Paul's story is more one about blindly following charismatic leaders rather than a Romeo and Juliet retelling. Quick overview of the Dune timeline so Dune actually takes place about 21,000 to 22,000 years into the future. The year 10,191 is that many years since the beginning of the Guild Navigators monopoly over interstellar travel and commerce within the imperium. About 200 BG (before guild) is the Butlerian Jihad when humanity revolves against thinking machines, leading to the eradication of AI and the birth of the phrase "Thou, shalt not make a machine in the likeness of a human mind" this is also a law. During this Before Guild era is when the great schools are born. There is Bene Gessert (Lady Jessica and the Reverend Mother), the Mentats (the guy who rolls his eyes back at the beginning of the film is a Mentant and the dude who says our pet cannot understand you is also one) Mentats are human super computers trained to replace AI and the Spacing Guild who use the spice to control interstellar travel. House Atreides and House Harkonnen have such a long rivalry is because House Atreides humiliated House Harkonnens and accused them of cowardliness and treason as they abounded humanity during there Jihad whereas the Atreides showed bravery and honor.

Derek Leach

her acting was really good in euphoria lol she doesn't just scowl...she did an amazing portrayal of an addict...she didn't win 2 emmys for nothing.

Alyssa Dyson

I would def recommend the rewatch before getting into the second movie. I could tell you were caught up with the visuals and were a bit distracted from the dialogue and paul's visions/prophecies throughout...a lot of your questions are laid out for you in one way or another but just not thrown in your face like some movies. Im glad you seemed to enjoy it even if you were a bit confused lol either way im excited for the next one. 💜 also there is no "force" or "magic" in this world...everything is considered to be science and the result of some sort of training.

Alyssa Dyson

Btw. Dune II (videogame by Westwood, that later created Command and Conquer series) defined modern real-time war strategy genre (RTS). If you like Starcraft, pay a tribute to Dune 2 :D

Michal Kubán

How do you know Dune 2 is coming next weekend??? I’m new and lost as hell! Where do I look to find these things out??

Mark B

Don't think about languages in sci-fi content. They are not speaking english. It is dubbed in english for viewer's comfort.

Michal Kubán

Dune inspired damn Star Wars. It is THE sci-fi. Shame that first movie was made by Lynch (it was not horrible, but it was very weird in classic "David Lynchy" way, not saying Dune is not weird, but in a very different way). EDIT: I have to suggest "Way to Dune" (made by his son from Frank's original notes, when he was writing Dune). Green Brain is also a very interesting book, that dude was really into enviromental sciences and you can feel it reading every page.

Michal Kubán

Brilliant reaction as always and looking forward to your reaction on the sequel. Haven't seen anyone comment this yet, but the director (Denis Villeneuve) is the same one that did Arrival.

Jua

Arrrgg. Sorry , stereo-typical stoner here. lol. I forgot; ]

Madmanmarz1981

It's not that Jamis or Stilgar are poor fighters, both Jessica and Paul are borne of hundreds of generations of genetic selection for reflexes and other abilities. Plus Paul has been trained since he could walk in combat by Gurney, Duncan and his Mother. His Mother, being of the Bene Gesserit, has had training that isn't available to any others outside the order, she could have personally gone through that whole group of them single handed. Due to their inhospitable world and subjugation, the Fremen are some of the best fighters in the Imperium, they've just happened to stumble across two people who are in the top 0.001% of fighting ability.

Jeromy M

Man I owned Dune 2 the second it was released! I ONLY ever wanted the Bosses reaction! Same as Man of Fire! Own it! Just want the reaction!

Mark B

Yes, from a book. One of the most popular sci-fi books. I like how it reminded you of the first star wars, since Lucas stole some of his plot from dune. You won't see computers or robots, because thinking machines are outlawed in the empire. Thousands of years ago A.I. Tried to take over and were barely defeated by the humans, thus being banned. Thufir is a mentat, a human computer. The bene Jeseret are prominent in the film, but Denis completely cut out the spacing guild for the film.

steven engler

Boss!!! I’m already on here for life!! You deserve a raise!!! Rock on brother!

Mark B

Damn I can't wait for Boyd to watch Part 2, I love how much he's enjoying this adaption.

Jeromy M

I really like how Paul sees Jamis helping him learn the ways of desert. And in a way he does, just not the way he expected. His gift of prophecy being flawed is very intriguing, it made me interested in finding out more about the lore🤓

Madmanmarz1981

Scowling is not acting. Zendaya uses the same school of acting as Michelle Rodriguez. Permanent scowl. Maybe not 100% of the time but more than she should. Scowling is her main emotion.

TigerMyth

What happened here?
