Garnet is HOT!?!

Steven Universe s2 eps 3 & 4

Comments

Wait. You're a huge Zelda fan but have only played 3?? Play more of them! Make a series of it!!

Spencer

I am talking about the molecular structure of their bodies. How else would they be so easily stabbed and poofed if not making sure the molecular structure of their bodies was more built up to prevent that? Pearl was focused on where she was previously injured and the wrap is a part of her while Amethyst was not putting much thought in her body thus it was easily damaged. And I don't know what you mean by pointing out the extra armor. That's how everyone's bodies works? Pearl's body had been destroyed thus she made a new vessel that fixed her previous flaw and can put on armor in other scenarios when necessary.

Vex Valor

For sure. It's like I said, there's no perfect 1:1, that's just how I simplify it for myself.

Idle Oath

I really don’t like this theory because it goes against the idea that Garnet is her own person. In her words, Ruby and Sapphire may as well be names for her right and left arms. Also, it’s not internally consistent—you can just look for yourself and it stops making sense really quickly.

Tim Chaos

It isn’t, and I really don’t like it because it goes against the idea that Garnet is her own person. In her words, Ruby and Sapphire may as well be names for her right and left arms. Also, it’s not internally consistent—you can just look for yourself and it stops making sense really quickly.

Tim Chaos

“Extra padding to withstand more blows” source? I mean the clothes are just clothes made of light, right? They put on extra armor when needed.

Tim Chaos

Better analogy than most but I feel like that undersells the level of connection required for fusion (as little as it is in one or two examples). it requires some level of shared feelings but touching someone doesn’t. You can bump into someone by accident for example.

Tim Chaos

That is such a good way of explaining it, I could never put it into words you did it perfectly

Jankyjna

To be fair, Elijah gets a new crush every new show she reacts.

Brett

Anyone who’s played team sports knows there’s definitely a special kind of relationship attached to battle.

Pherson G

Fusions are like a personification of a relationship. Etc friendships, relationships, family, also can be strictly for battle but theres normally a relationship at play to a degree

Hayden

My dude, why?

GhostPuss

Lovingly, this comment gotta go

Simone Lott

Fusions are nuonced, but Stevens fusion with his Dad is VERY sexual. Probably what got the series canceled.

Tyrant-Den

Ruby and Sapphire sneak up at the end of season 1 and really steal your heart as crystal gems. They're so complex and my favorite couple ❤️

Simone Lott

Yes, it's the date Love Letters aired ^^

Arianod

Can’t wait for the episode where Garnet explains how Ruby and Sapphire met at the gem equivalent of a gay bar

Fritz Random

I always saw fusion as like, at the level of a deep and meaningful conversation. Ruby and sapphire choosing to always be fused is like to always talk so deeply to each other about everything, they functionally work as one, and there is an intimacy part to it since they have to make yourself vulnerable to chose, and when the fusion is unhealthy, that’s like being trapped in an argument, which will hurt and can traumatize both parties. And some fusions fall apart for healthy fusions when the two step out of sync, and aren’t able to communicate to each other in a way the other fully understands anymore. Like when Opal was surprised, and Amethyst and Pearl were individually overwhelmed, and since they experience those emotions quite differently, and struggle to communicate those emotions to each other, the conversation ended, and they fell apart.

Fancy Birb

Thecnically both (ruby and sapphire ARE garnet). They could unfuse from garnet and fuse with pearl that way, but the end result would be the same fusion between three gems. They just like being AS garnet most of the time.

LikeCat

when pearl fuses with garnet is it ruby sapphire and pearl or is it garnet and pearl

jack blakemore

Okay you joke about the "Hollywood in Kansas" thing but, going forward, DO keep in mind that the geography of the SU-verse is very, very weird. We never get a straight geography lesson or anything but there are these HINTS at this extremely weird world and it's so funny. Also man I was looking at the episodes ahead and there are SO MANY BANGERS COMING UP. I'm glad you did Say Uncle last season so it doesn't interrupt.

Alp

Does that date referr to an episode's air date?

LikeCat

I am anticipating to see your reaction to the next crossover episode.

Kelvin James Landon

Seeing you two be goofy together makes my heart happy. So happy for you two.

James S

I would highly recommend listening to the full version of the ending theme

Kieran Hunter

Be careful Mosco, Elijah might get jealous! 😝

HeroNotFound

Anyone else getting a sort of 'teenager struggling to come to terms with herself' vibe from Amethyst in this? Taken in context with past episodes, it paints a picture of Amethyst developing under Rose's care, and then with Rose and Greg ("Story for Steven"), but then with Steven's birth Amethyst loses both Rose and Greg, who now has to focus on Steven as his priority ("Maximum Capacity"). Add to this her feelings about being created to be part of the invasion force ("On the Run" and the whole 'I didn't ask to be made!' scene), it goes a long way to explaining the need for external validation that shows itself in "Reformed".

shkspr1048

I like that the new form plays into long-standing themes with Amethyst's character by having her gem less covered. Shows she's a little more comfortable with herself than before.

Gone

That water bear gem actually becomes the main antagonist for season three. Once it starts using its power to absorb other gems it becomes one of the strongest characters in the universe. Steven gets defeated multiple times and has to end up fusing with Connie to even stand a chance. Keep an eye on future episodes. You will be able to see it in the background.

Looking at the stars through leaves

Me too Mosco, I hadn’t really seen Garnet in that way before, but now…… I mean she’s BUILT like Mommy She Ra. 😍🌈❤️💙

Liam Gradwell

like a boss

Arianod

Excellent way to put it.

cosmotron

Garnet is thicc

John Bossert

That is the best description of fusion I've seen.

Travis Laake

There's not a 1:1 analogue for fusion in normal human interactions I front think, but I personally think of it more like touching. There's romantic ways to touch people, sexual ways, friendly ways (like hugs or high fives, for instance), professional ways ( like handshakes), fun ways (like dancing). There's touching for safety, like a firefighter carrying someone to safety or a nurse giving CPR. Some people are touchier than others. Some people touch other people just as a part of their job. Some people don't like to be touched at all!

Idle Oath

"Love at first sight doesn't exist" -Garnet of the Crystal Gems, 23/4/2015

Arianod

I can't wait until you see more Amethyst focused episodes! When I first watched the show, I really didn't like Amethyst, but now she is one of my many favorites!

Pikagirl

Always has been ^^

Arianod

Yeah, always listen to the music at the end. lol

Pikagirl

From my understanding of the forms and shapeshifting, they have to maintain the form when shapeshifting, so if Amethyst shapeshifted to fix it, it would be exhausting to continue the shapeshifted form. And she also wasn't making a very stable form. Pearl took a long time to come back because she was giving it extra padding to withstand more blows. The wrap where she was stabbed was placed there so if she was stabbed there again, she wouldn't have her form destroyed. Amethyst kept poofing because she was making herself too weak and her being too weak to fight would effect the team.

Vex Valor

Oh! also, Amethyst *could* shape-shift back into her proper form, but she'd have to hold it. The form they take when they exit their gem becomes their new default, so it would be like constantly trying to hold a pose or something. Easy at first, but it would quickly become annoying and then tiring.

Tricimir *

they have to hold the shape shifting and its as long as they hold it which takes energy, but when they reform its permanent

deny

I love how the show is not afraid to have heroes with insecurities. Imagine - you've been saving the world for thousands of years, but that doesn't mean you can't have body image issues. I think we can infer that this is why Amethyst likes to shapeshift so much - any time she doesn't have to be herself is a good time, so she finds any excuse to do it.

Albedo12

Mosco, Can I just say I absolutely love how excited you get over a Zelda reference? If you haven't played Minish cap, please do! I think you'd like it lot.

Tricimir *

Hollywood is actually in California. You go to California to become a movie actor, New York to do theatre, and Kansas for farming. Him going to Kansas is one of the jokes in the show where they change the layout of the world.

oopsglitch

So shapeshifting takes effort. Sorta like they're flexing to make their body do what they want. They can't keep it up forever and have to snap back to their base form. Their base form is a projection of who they are and drastic changes that don't fit with their true self image aren't sustainable and may cause them to collapse in on themselves. Also, remember that being poofed hurts. It's not something to be taken lightly.

Reaper Scythe

Shapeshifting is like tensing a muscle, it's relatively easy, but eventually you have to relax it again or you'll injure yourself. As such it's not permanent.

For fusions I'm not sure if you want to be told (or exactly how I perceive it) so you can skip my comment if you want. But in my opinion fusion is definitely seen as a metaphor for relationships whether that being romantic or platonic. You can see it well being pearl and amethyst as a platonic relationship, garnet being in a romantic relationship, and jasper and lapis being in a toxic relationship.

Diamond Blue Book

Amethyst might be a gremlin, but that hair flip in the intro does it for me. ^^;

Sanmei

likewise, there is a filler episode in our relatively near future that is just...goofy and unhinged on a level that I am very looking forward to mosco reacting to.

potato potato also another potato

Fusions are a rather broad (but clever) metaphor for relationships. Relationships can be familial, platonic, or romantic/sexual, and they can be healthy or unhealthy. The stability of the fusion depends on the stability of the relationship between the two (or more) characters. I honestly love fusion as a metaphor because it really highlights the intimate relationships of the characters in the show and is a very unique way of depicting them.

vivian xavier

The next to episodes have one that I am really looking forward to and the other one... not so much. ^^° One is a Ronaldo episode.

Markus Erdt

* Throws water bear gem back into the sea * "I'll deal with you later"

GhostPuss

I legit thought it was the episode at first because this show's soundtrack makes so many Zelda music references as it is

dys

I think the conflict between Garnet and Amethyst in this episode is mainly because a Gem’s physical form should be an expression of who they are. Garnet is getting mad because Amethyst is rushing her form or making forms that don’t reflect who she is but at the same time Amethyst doesn’t like thinking about who she is. Why she exists and what she’s meant to do are troubling for her.

A Magic Duck

20:04 I found the timing of your phone going off is hilarious with the scene 😂

Sun

I think the metaphor of fusion is closest to the metaphor they use in the show actually! It’s like dancing! Something you only do if ur comfortable or with ppl you know or love. You can dance with a stranger and it can be great! You can dance with family, a partner, a friend etc. but it takes a certain level of closeness and vulnerability! 🥳❤️💃

Broody Gaming

Jamie's voice sounded similar, had to look him up, he is also Rutherford from Star Trek: Lower Decks. Edit: Also the full ending song always makes me cry.

Jack Middleton

Throughout the entire intro i was just staring at Elijah blair witching in the tv reflection (and elijah just mentioned it as i was typing this)

WHPGeek

The giant tiki mask in Amethyst's room is DEFINITELY from a Nintendo game I've played (actually, I think there are several games with tiki mask enemies - Zelda & Mario being two). Pretty sure the barrels are from Donkey Kong. Also, there's a theory that you can tell who is in control of Garnet by the ratio of blue to red in her visor. More blue is Sapphire, more red is Ruby. Can't remember if this is crew confirmed or not tho.

Nokomis Bracken

Theres a theory that the amount of red or blue on garnets visor shows whose talking. You can see really well at the end of love letters how sometimes her visor switches from mostly red to mostly blue.

Kyle Murrell

"Who wants to watch a cartoon about people crying?" is a criticism that was made about Steven Universe itself. They worked the line into the show after it had become abundantly clear that actually a LOT of people absolutely did want to watch "a cartoon about people crying."

Albedo12

I like to view fusions as holding hands. For Ruby and Sapphire, they’re holding hands as a couple. Then, when they fuse with anyone else (like Amethyst or Pearl), they’re just extending their arms out to them as friends. You can both hold hands romantically and platonically. It isn’t exclusive, and it only really feels awkward if the people don’t feel comfortable with each other- like how Stevonnie nearly came apart multiple times in their episode due to both of the kids’ anxieties. Moral of the story: Hand-hold safely, kids!

Rando_mIndividual

Re: Amethyst and shape shifting. When a gem shape shifts, it’s something they have to maintain. Eventually they will go back to their base shape. Also, regarding Amethyst’s music, every main character has an instrument and/or style of music associated with them, and when characters fuse their instruments do too! It’s pretty fun.

Matthew Abbott

The Steven Universe wiki has like ten, fifteen screens worth of references/Easter eggs (most anime related)...but it's also horribly spoiler-y, so I wouldn't recommend it for a few seasons yet.

David Johnson

we really get a good look at how Amethyst feels about herself in reformed. Also some more on the Pearl Amethyst dynamic and how she views herself in relation to Pearl.

Willow Arkan

I love the advice our thicc queen gives to Jamie. So real and true.

Sekiro

So, fusion as it applies to romance and sex (keeping in mind that fusion is a metaphor for all sorts of different kinds of relationship, so not all fusions have implications like this). Garnet is only romantically interested in herself, but we get implications (nothing super overt because it’s a kids show) that’s she’s…shall we say open to others casually. Without going into spoilers, there’s a point where Garnet offers to fuse with someone casually just for the fun of it, and it’s treated very much like a potential friendly hookup. When Garnet fuses with the other Crystal Gems the reasons they fuse sorta dictate the “vibe” of the fusion. With Amethyst (IMO) there’s nothing sexual about it, but with Pearl there’s definitely at least some sort of physical attraction there (you can tell from how charged with innuendo their dance is). When they form Alexandrite it feels very utilitarian: four friends cooperating for a purpose. There’s a lot more to go into, but it’s hard to discuss without going into spoilers.

Matthew Abbott

Agreed, came here to say just that!

Matthew Abbott

Garnet grabs the gem out of that water creature and rips it out as she tosses it away.

David Johnson

Other Nintendo reference. In Giant Woman, the heaven beetle has a tiny gameboy in their tiny temple.

Chet Bliese

Finally, we see Garnet run away with the Mailman.

Markus Erdt

you two are adorable xD also, having elijah be in the reflection but not noticeable until you notice is giving jinx popping up behind cait in that one scene

Annieme

Lol the notification was perfectly timed with Jamie turning around.

S3EP8

Ok now it’s time to watch the extended intro. Like this is the perfect to watch it please.

High Voltage

Just in case I forget! There is a 3 minute video, available on YouTube that you should watch before the next reaction. ;3 I can reply to this post with a link if you need/trust in me, but want to avoid spoilers, and hard to send an unknown link for you to open lol. You should hopefully already have had other people prepping you for this! If not tho, it’s on both the “Cartoon Network UK” and “Steven Universe” official YouTube Channels, 3:14 and 3:23 in length, respectively. (Same video, length just varied by different YT end screens). Just search “Steven Universe Extended” and should be the top two results hopefully. 🤞 Enjoy! 🥳 Now off to eat dinner and watch this reaction in full lol. Happy New Year!

Ríon

Garnet is a lesbian couple in a single form. Of course she is hot XD
