If I remember, it has to do with the Gems involved being similar/different. Ruby and Sapphire are the same mineral, corundum. Specifically, ruby is corundum that contains chromium. Since they're basically the same Gem type, they fuse without additional limbs. Different Gem types, like Pearl and Amethyst, display extra limbs when fused.

Stronger than you is easily one of the best songs in the show. When I was kid, I liked it so much that i watched it on repeat until I memorized it lol. There's also a version with Peridot singing while she's tied up on youtube. Oh,you'll be able to watch the extended intro now too! That stuff aside, it's a common misunderstanding to think that Ruby ans Saphire are gay. They aren't. Gems are magic based AIs, so they don't have a sex. I imagine part of the confusion comes from them using she/her, but they've been using those words before the English language existed.

So yeah Malachite looks like that because she is a very unstable and toxic fusion. It’s heavily implied that the more well balanced and stable a fusion is, the more “normal looking” it is. I hope you enjoy your rewatch! You are gonna notice SO much stuff now that you know! One of your first SU reactions, you came SO CLOSE to guessing! It was like that scene in a horror movie where the victim is trying to be quiet and still, and the monster passes like an inch from their face! So, going back, one of my favorite scenes in season 1, that gets even funnier in hindsight, is Garnet on the phone with Dr. Maheshwaran. Yes, it's a silly bit of dialogue, but when you realize that was likely brought on by Ruby and Sapphire panicking and not knowing what to say, it's even funnier! Garnet is Garnet. But Garnet is also Ruby and Sapphire. And from here on out, you're gonna be aware of those little moments where it's apparent one is more in control.

There are SO many little hints about Sapphire and Ruby. In the intro when they show each of the crystal gems with their names, a shooting star appears in the sky behind them. With Garnet, however, it's two. Or my personal favorite, in Fusion Cuisine when they're all fused together into Alexandite when the fusion falls appart there are very briefly 4 silhouettes before 2 of them recombine into Garnet almost immediately. Of course, I say all this but I didn't see any of it coming until we actually met them either.

You will see Ruby and Sapphire again. Mid season two they have an argument and unfuse. Ruby goes to stay in the barn where Peridot now lives. The rest of the season has a "roommates who can't stand each other end up a couple" story line. That season finale is when they ultimately fuse into Citrine.

Lapis might just be the most tragic character in all of Steven Universe. And yes, I’m including THAT one. She was trapped as a mirror for thousands of years. Then returned home and got a terrible homecoming. Then she was bound into what might be the most toxic relationship of all time. And yes, fusion is a metaphor for intimacy and the fusion of Jasper and Lapis is basically a toxic, abusive relationship. Lapis is the saddest blue character in all of Steven Universe. Try and imagine Ruby riding on Amethyst's shoulders with Sapphire trying desperately to rein them both in and you might be able to see why their fusion can get a little out of control.... Incidentally..... you now know that the crystal gems are composed of 4 child-sized munchkins with Pearl towering over all of them.

In general the more compatible the gems, the more stable the fusion, and the more stable the fusion the more their design reflects that (Garnet being the most stable fusion we’ve seen just looks like another gem, while Alexandrite just looks wild because she’s not particularly stable). It’s incredibly hard to knock Garnet out of her fusion, but Sugalite could get knocked out with a simple blow because she’s less stable, and Alexandrite essentially has to work to hold her fusion at all because they naturally tend to diverge. And fusion is a metaphor for relationships (romantic, sexual, familial, and platonic at different points), so it stands to reason that stable relationships can withstand more without falling apart.

Interesting detail: proper stable fusions (like garnet, stevonnie, opal, etc) have their own voice and their own personality. That's kind of what garnet meant when she told stevonnie "you are not two people, and you are not one person. You are an experience." Meanwhile, unstable fusions (like the lapis and jasper fusion or when opal unfused after saying she didnt get the beetle in Giant Woman) don't have their own voice. You can see ruby and sapphires silhouette in an earlier episode. If you go back to the episode where alexandrite is stevens mom and with connies parents and they unfuse and pause. You can see the silhouettes of all the gems forming alexandrite and that includes ruby and sapphire.

Had a feeling you were going to guess it when Ruby appeared. Also you picked up on so much foreshadowing in previous episodes (Garnet having two gems, her line about fusion being so easy for them etc) yet each time came to the wrong conclusion. And now you know why Garnet was so happy when meeting Stevonnie! And I died laughing when you said she couldn't be a fusion when you saw their gems.

I like that the song Sapphire is humming is also the melody of the "I am made of love" refrain from the song Garnet was singing. It's like their theme melody.

I legitimately never thought about Ruby and Sapphire holding hands, I always assumed Garnet had two arms because she's a perfectly stable fusion, same as why Stevonnie only had two.

And now you know, Garnet isn't high up in the Gem Hierarchy, she is in fact an oppressed minority and also two lesbians in a trenchcoat.

I remember when I first watched this episode. I never considered that garnet could be a fusion and I had to pause when she refused and I screamed a little and cried because it was so beautiful.

Yes this! Mosco is right - while not always romantic or sexual in nature, fusion is a very intimate thing. It requires sharing the entirety of oneself with another, and Malachite is such a toxic fusion for it.

it was the episode that convinced me to start watching! unfortunately that meant i went in thinking "garnet is a fusion" was not a secret in the lore and my surprise was that steven didn't already know 😭🤣

Fun gem fact, Malachites become toxic when wet because they will leach copper into the water. I always thought it was the perfect analogy for Jasper and Lapis' fusion.

Honestly pretty accurate. Even YEARS after the end of the original series, a full movie AND an epilogue mini-series, I STILL sometimes find myself asking that very question.

that's...adorable, i don't...think that's correct, but I kind of like that better than...they are just so in sync they fuse into a normal person without little mutations where they differ. I might have to adopt elijah's theory.

for those who want to see the shot from fusion cuisine, I found it and posted it on the discord yesterday, it's only a frame or so, but it's clear as day, you see 4 people come out of alexandrite, not three.

It was my understanding that the more compatible the fusion is, the less extra bits they tend to have. Stevonnie also didn't have extra parts. I think I also remember hearing that specifically when a fusion has extra eyes it means that they literally see the world differently.

The rest of the season has a "roommates who can't stand each other end up a couple" story line. That season finale is when they ultimately fuse into Citrine.
