The alternate timeline being created was just a one-off comment that doesn't actually matter and will never lead anywhere, but having watched himself die does end up being one of the reasons mentioned during the season of the show all about Steven having complex PTSD.

2024-09-20 05:08:17 +0000 UTCThe show never really delves into this, but it’s pretty much basic lore, so it’s not a spoiler; essentially Garnet’s gem was broken a long time ago and Rose Quartz saved her by placing the two halves at equivalent spots of her “body”. You’ve seen Pearl go back into her pearl after poofing and you will see Amethyst go back into her amethyst in the future, but you’ll never see Garnet go back into her garnet and this is why. She can’t. It’s irrevocably broken. Fans believe this is why she’s so much stronger than the other two. She has to be stronger. She’s so much more vulnerable to the reality of death then they are, because again she can’t take extreme damage to her body and simply retreat back inside her gemstone. It’s very fitting of Garnet when you think about it – she turned this undeniable weakness into her true strength.

That this episode did such an excellent job of fleshing out her dynamic with Lars and making her a sympathetic character. I think we've all known or been part of a situation similar to Lars and Sadie. Granted, their's isn't completely one-sided, but I do think Lars intentionally leans on Sadie's affection to get his way without reciprocating, even though he clearly has feelings for her too. My first time watching, I completely missed the implication that there was more to Lars and Sadie's night together than just a videogame. Sadie was a refreshing character to meet at the time this came out. Girls/Women with her body type were usually played off as a joke, and certainly not as a potential love interest. Sadie is an absolute sweetheart, and I can't wait for you to learn more about her. I always chalked Garnet's dual gems up to her being more balanced, or since they're on her hands, an indication that she is more about strength. But, ho ho! I must say, O Wee Lass, next week's adventure will be quite the cracking good time! Unless of course, Steven can't get his drinking problem under control. What a headache!

I still think there were a little too many "townie" episodes, where they focused on Steven and the human characters, but I really like Lars and Sadie. Also fun fact about them: they were OCs Rebecca Sugar made up in high school. So if it ever seems like there's more characterization or background lore to them... it's because she'd been rotating them in her mind for decades before making them characters here!

Pearls is in her head because of how smart and tactical she is, and Amethysts is over her heart because she is more impulsive and does what she "feels" is right!

Pearl's in her head, perception intelligence. Amethyst over her heart, emotions over reason. Stephen in his belly... I'll let you figure out what that means... but consider how often food based themes come up. This all is explored briefly in season 3

If this were Owl House we'd be right around the "king becomes a writer" episode, which is to say, we've done our world building, introduced our characters, got through our little one off adventures, and now we are going to start getting a lot more serialized plot stuff relatively soon.

Also… much debate about whether or not we’re even following the original Steven anymore or if that Steven technically dies in this episode and we’re following the Steven from the 5th timeline from now on! We don't really know much about it, it's just brought up at some point when a character questions Amethyst's behaviour.
