There's a lot of Xander hate out there and I'm a staunch Xander supporter 😅 I like your thoughts on the character development and a characters history and how that impacts their choices. Great reaction, one of my favourite episodes.

She even has to lie to herself when nobody else is around. As you said, great to see Xander growing up and actually finding his way in the world. Despite feeling left behind with his friends all going off to college, he's managed to land on his feet and is arguably the most successful and independent of the all. Really tough break for Riley trying to hold onto something he knows won't last. Too bad. He's a decent guy at the end of the day.

2021-07-09 05:38:45 +0000 UTCIt's heartbreaking that Riley is in this predicament. He clearly does love her, and is self aware that she doesn't seemingly really love him back. She doesn't seem to love Riley himself, but loves the IDEA of Riley. The "prince charming", the "normal boyfriend" that makes her seem like a "normal girl". That's fantasy. We heard her say it to human Angel in "I Will Remember You". We saw how upset she was about finding out Riley was part of The Initiative. She wasn't upset that he was that he was a "super soldier" who fought demons. She was upset because he wasn't the safe, normal guy she hoped for. Even now, he's involved with her job, but he's no longer the soldier boy. There's a sense of normalcy and she's content with it. She fears losing him because she fears losing the normalcy he provides. She fears that The Slayer is a burden that'll always sabotage potential happiness, especially romantic relationships. We saw it with Angel. We even saw it even with Scott. We see it in this very episode where she asks Riley if he would prefer "normal" Buffy. Here's this guy who knows what she is, what it entails, and yet he hasn't left her. She wants to hold on the sense of normalcy he provides, and fears the day it'll all be too much and he decides to leave... Riley knows this, but he wants to hold to her regardless. Why? Is he hoping one day she'll truly love him back? Or maybe she's all he seems to have left? Maybe both? He lost a lot in the past year. His mentor, his star playing career, his friends. His sense of morality was turned upside down. Almost everything he had was removed. All that's really left is Buffy, the woman he literally risked it all for. Even his current friends aren't necessarily his. They're Buffy's. He knows Buffy doesn't truly love him, but he doesn't seem to want to leave, willing to take what ever bit of "love" she'll give him. That fear of her finding the "passion" that she doesn't have for him with someone else stays with him. He feared it with Angel. He even feared it with Dracula. She hasn't left, but he feels that one day, she'll make that placeholder postion he's been sitting in, vacant for someone else...

2021-07-09 01:00:30 +0000 UTCI’m glad you liked this one! It’s one of my favorite episodes because it shows that even though it took Xander a while to get to his feet, he managed to be successful. In a lot of ways, he’s the most successful of all the Scoobies. It’s a good contrast to the Restless episode when he felt like he was trying to catch up to everybody.

I always found that Riley was my favorite of her love interests, so I find it so sad that she doesn't love him back. but there it is! We know as the audience the relationship is, indeed, Doomed.

Kelly often played the part of Xander in other episodes too, when Nicholas was sick or otherwise was unavailable to do a scene. Pretty cool, huh? Great reaction. This episode always feels a little weaker to me, even though it's still fun to watch. Your reaction made it even more enjoyable. Looking forward to more of this season with you.
