2020-11-27 00:36:44 +0000 UTCGlad to see that you have immediately appreciated the slight shift in balance at the beginning of this season. Perhaps this was particularly essential for a more international audience comparatively to the more unrelenting UK original. As they were planning for more longevity than just 2 shorter series. Waiting for these moments would of been way too far down the road. Gervais and Merchant seemed to like to save these elements for the end of the run. I imagine to give a more impactful payoff without the schmaltzy undertones that can permeate other shows. Which leads into another clear difference. In that the "fly on the wall" documentary style feels more authentic in the original. Also aided by the fact that the characters don't feel like they belong in a sitcom rather than in actual office. When the show originally aired, this of course was nearer the beginning of "reality tv" While the office manager said and did things that were extremely misguided and or deeply offensive. This was to purposefully help to blur the lines between comedy and documentary. Casual viewers, channel hopping, might not have realised immediately that they were watching a comedy. Particularly when the stations were becoming littered with the "reality TV" of the time that looked very similar. Of course what we see now is mostly augmented and as far from reality as one can get. Hope this gives some interesting info on the history of the shows inception.
