The show was constantly fighting to stay on air and by the end of the 3rd season, Dan Harmon did not expect nbc to continue the series. What they did do was take his ideas for future episode plots and fired him only to rehire him for the final 5th season bc of the drop in ratings after his departure.

The showrunner Dan Harmon got fired after season 3, so season 4 will probably seem a bit off, writing wise. Don't get too discouraged with it though, because Harmon got re-hired for season 5 and put things back to normal, well the Greendale type of "normal"...
