Painting King Daredevil – My Second Mini!

After learning so much from painting Darth Nihilus, I decided to dive right into my next project: King Daredevil! Since I still only had shades of red and black in my collection, I kept to that theme for this one. I thought it’d be cool to replace his brown coat with a black one with red underneath to give him a darker, more intense look. 👑🖤❤️

The Process:

I started with a zenithal prime, though I think I went a bit heavy on the White Scar again! 😅

After that, I began blocking in the main colors using the same palette and process I used for Darth Nihilus:

For the red portions, I used Flesh Tearers Red. And, of course, in my eagerness, I managed to snap the end of his spear while painting! 😫 Super glue to the rescue! After some careful patching, I finished blocking in the base colors and settled in to watch Squidmar’s Masterclass on YouTube for the 100th time. 😆

Trying New Techniques: Inspired by Squidmar’s tutorials, I experimented with layering to create more defined highlights and shadows on his costume. For the double-sided spear, I originally used Stormhost Silver but decided to paint over it with Abaddon Black and layer on Fenrisian Grey, Eshin Grey, and Dawnstone to make it look metallic. Not entirely sure I nailed the effect, but hey, I’m keen to improve on that! 😅 I added some Mephiston Red “blood” to the spear for an extra touch of drama… and then I snapped the spear AGAIN. 🙄 Good ol’ super glue came to the rescue once more!

Working on the Base & Final Details: For the base, I initially tried some browns, but they came out looking strangely metallic. I ended up repainting it in shades of grey and drybrushing highlights from there. The toughest bit? That thin Daredevil logo on his chest! It was tricky, but I think I did alright. I was also tempted to add a white dot to the eyes… maybe next time. 🤔

Overall, I had a blast painting this mini! I found myself reaching for Abaddon Black a lot to fix little errors, and I’m definitely learning as I go. I’m pretty happy with how my second mini turned out, and I just want to say a huge thank you to everyone for the advice and support. 🙏

Here's another photo with some nice lights and my wife's hand haha you've seen my my hand many times now.

What’s Next? In my next post, I’ll be sharing some exciting Patreon upgrades and changes coming in November! Stay tuned for all the details! 👀

Thank you for being part of this journey with me—I can’t wait to keep learning and growing with each mini. Let me know what you think of King Daredevil, and if you have any tips for next time!

Cheers,
Gen
