Brass Eye S1 Ep6 "Decline" REACTION!

This show is such a wild ride.
Got to do Paedogeddon after this journey with Brass Eye. In for a penny, in for a pound.

Dude! You have to do paedogeddon. It's the pinnacle of Chris Morris' TV satire. You've been inoculated to the dark humour over 6 episodes now.

You have to do the special. It's incredible
Morris then went onto do Jam on TV (after Blue Jam on the radio), then his short film My Wrongs, Nathan Barley (with Charlie Brooker), IT Crowd, the films Four Lions & The Day Shall Come as well as directing multiple episodes of Veep.
Once you've done the special & Partridge, I highly suggest checking those out - particularly Jam & Veep.
It's a wild ride and these were the shows that made me want to work in TV comedy. I was very lucky to meet him when we did the DVD releases of The Day Today, Brass Eye & Jam & all the Easter Eggs and extras.

The special was the nail in the coffin for brasseye, as a load of celebrities and alot of the press who did not want to appear supporting the subject matter, complained about the show and wanting it banned, some even admitted to never even seeing the show. But well done channal 4 as I think they showed the the special 3 times. Each time the rating went up. 😊 keep up the good work. You need to try and find a show called Monkey dust.

I remember it being delayed, but can't remember why. It definitely wasn't as sharp as the original 6 episodes, and I think even in those short years in between, things had moved on a lot (widespread internet use for one thing).
I really hope Boomer does it though. It's obviously got controversial parts to it, but it does have one of the best jokes - 'that was the one thing we didn't want to happen'.
Richie
2025-03-07 20:06:20 +0000 UTC
As with anything, you now have the context of the show and maybe these 6 episodes have softened the blow to the craziness in the special, so that you could laugh at some of it now. And it's not much longer, right? So you might as well watch it.

Ok, so the Cocoa Shunter bit with Darcus Howe in the Zeit Guest interview...
For me, this was Morris at his wildest. Darcus Howe was a human rights activist and writer (watch the Mangrove episode of Steve McQueen's brilliant Small Axe film series for an excellent true story involving him)
Anyway, a cocoa shunter is a homophobic phrase, so Morris decided to accuse a famous, black human rights activist of being a cocao shunter, a phrase he obviously knows can also be heard as a racist term too. He then gets out of anything legal by saying that it's the introduction to someone else, offending them too in the process.

Great stuff Boomer, Chris Morris is the unsung hero of Satire... All through The Day Today and Brass Eye he shined an absurdist light on all that was frustrating and hypocritical about the mainstream media and 25 years on i'm sure you'll agree how relevant and funny it still is... I was in the UK when the special aired and it got the whole country talking - mainly in the way that the show would lampoon, they try and defame anything they don't understand and condemn anyone who challenges their integrity - which it must be said, is wafer thin...

Yeah Stewart Lee did a bit in his act about a real life event her Joe Pasquale nicked one of Michael Redmond's jokes, the one where he stands in someone's garden, which Lee then explains doesn't work if a celebrity says it, the joke only worked if it's a complete stranger, I've seen Michael Redmond live a few times, he's very funny.

Paedogeddon did an excellent job at showing the hypocrisy surrounding paedophilia. There was even an article questioning the morals of the episode right next to another about how big the boobs of a 15 year old singer are now. https://www.reddit.com/r/chrismorris/comments/y5t5s3/daily_mirror_criticizing_c4_for_brass_eye/#lightbox

blimey that's mad, the thing that is also so shocking & what so many don't figure in/ think of, when you watch the documentary's and things is, the women killed, it not only destroys that persons life, taking that from them, but their children, siblings, parents etc, the 16 yr old lass in Halifax, it killed her old man, and the other women who survived how do you ever fully get past something like that, the trauma of it, credit to them all...

Unpopular opinion - the Paedogeddon episode isn't as funny as these original six episodes. Not because of the subject matter - there are plenty of jokes and references to paedophilia and other horrific stuff in these. More that it just felt a bit "off". Can't put my finger on why - maybe because it was made 5 years later and it just seemed like the chemistry was not quite there. That said, it's still better than most things and you should watch it.
Does anyone remember that it was delayed by a week when first broadcast? I remember sitting down to watch it, but they put an old episode on instead. It was shown the following week instead but I have no idea why.

Great reaction! I came to you through your The Day Today reactions, but have been waiting for these. I will never forget the experience of sitting down every Thursday night at 9:30pm (correct me if I'm wrong), with my parents (a civil servant and a head teacher) and watching each of these, aged 17. It was excruciatingly embarrassing to watch in that company, but genuinely the funniest and wildest comedy I've ever seen. I recorded them all on a VHS tape and watched it endlessly.
This last episode did not have the Peter Sutcliffe Musical section as the controller of Channel 4 Michael Grade had made them edit it out. Chris Morris then added a subliminal frame in the end credits saying "GRADE IS A CUNT". I remember that that only came out because he showed it to someone at a party (might have misremembered). Rewatching it now, that Sutcliffe section isn't that good, but it is a legitimately shocking thing to make fun of. The Pulp spoof about child-murderer Myra Hindley is way funnier.
Also, on that broadcast, the phrase "Try telling that to these bog-brained Murphys. You'd have more chance of getting a blowjob from the Pope" had the word "blowjob" replaced with the sound of his car revving. The fake news report was great too - I remember my Dad thought it was real until he saw the female reporter with a moustache. I'm glad you appreciate the effort he put into it - all his characters are so funny and distinct.

I'm going to throw this out there, and I don't mean to have a go at you or anyone else but I think it needs to be said: "posh" is perhaps my most loathed word in the English language, because it's basically a way for the self-appointed working class to trash the lower-middle class. I used to get bullied at school for being "posh" largely by other lower-middle class people who came from exactly the same area as me but spoke slightly differently - or at least pretended to - and so thought they were living a gritty life in the ghetto rather than leafy, suburban London. No one hates anyone as much as the English lower-middle class hates itself.

no way bro , please do a patreon reaction to the special..... , its fantastic , regardless of the awful subject matter. besides , it literally does the opposite of what many people think the special is about , I'm sure that's not the reason for you maybe not wanting to do it , but i really think with all the context and 2 years of uk comedy it'll go down better than you think , don't mind game yourself into not doing it bro , i honestly think its the best episode by far along with some JAM episodes!

Totally agree, the pinnacle being the Daily Mail article about being outraged at the show, and then on the next page a photo of 15 year old Charlotte Church with the headline "She's a big girl now" (obviously referring to her breasts). It seems that for the Daily Mail, satirising media coverage is off limits, but sexualising a child is perfectly fine.

and for what its worth, King Boomer, whilst it is bad lol, I agree with others you should do the special, as it got 3,000 complaints, even if you end up in agreement with that, be interesting to hear your take on it and the complaints/ story that was.
Also with this time with Alan Partridge, the show is mocking the 'One Show' on the BBC, may be worth watching a few clips of that to see how wet it is and dull and what it is a parody of

I never put it together that they got Father Paul Stone to play Father Jools Doolan. Last I heard Chris Morris was trying to do a comedy movie about you guys and us doing the 1950s coup in Iran, and he was pretty disdainful of comedy just pandering to power these days.

Great reaction Boomer, never saw this show back in the day when I was a kid, this show feels on the edge even now, oddly whilst things are more 'woke' these days, this show would not feel out of place as the dark comedy it is, but must have been so controversial back when first on TV and aired, will have to look up how many complaints it had to UK ofcom
As for Peter Sutcliffe, King Boomer he was indeed one of the UK's worst serial killers, it's a really interesting & disturbing case, if interested in criminal history, there is so much to it,
from the botched police investigation and all the clues that were lost & not tied together, as they drowned in paperwork and fundamentally not really knowing how to deal with it & there being no DNA,
but also during the murders the police got a tape recording come in to them, with letters, like something out of a film, with the person speaking on the tape proclaiming to be the killer.
It threw the incompetent police investigation off, as they inexplicably then believed the murderer to be a Geordie, it cost the lives of other women
Even the story of how he was caught is mad.... was not by the detectives, but just two vigilant response uniformed patrol officers who stopped him in his car, which had false plates on, with a prostitute sat in the car with him.
The police 20 years on also got the man who sent in the hoax tape, from DNA/ cold case review
Was a good 7 part drama on ITV few years ago about it called the Long Shadow, with David Morrissey and Toby Jones, and another 20 years back called This is Personal, with Alun Armstrong.

The Special is maybe the greatest piece of television satire ever made, aimed squarely at the media, which reacted in exactly the way you'd expect.
It got shown twice then "banned", but not very effectively becuase they put it on the DVD.

You were asking about the definition of posh: it really just means someone who uses the so to speak "queens English" which is mostly upper-class people so it means that as well. I'll use likeable examples of posh people though it doesn't usually mean likeable: Stephen Fry and Hugh laurie are posh, baldrick isn't. Mark and Jeremy (because they basically come from middle class families who live in the country) are posh, superhands isn't. The polar opposite of posh would be the Benefits family, ie cockneys. Will is posh, Jay isn't. Posh basically means you can tell by a person's accent that they are middle or upper-class (I think "middle class" has begun to mean something quite different in America than it did in the past and still does here for the most part). The terms are inadequate though because the benefits family (which is an accurate caricature of the "working classes" that are on benefits) are called working class yet they've never done a day's work in their lives because they were raised on benefits (ie welfare), not that I can look down on them too much since I was as well but it is what it is.
