Garth Marenghi's Darkplace S1 Ep6 "The Creeping Moss from the Shores of Shuggoth" REACTION!

This title is a mouthful, and I feel like I NEED MORE FROM THIS SHOW!!! WHY DOES IT HAVE TO END?!?

Garth Marenghi's Darkplace S1 Ep6 "The Creeping Moss from the Shores of Shuggoth" REACTION!

Comments

I’m with Queen Boomer you need more “Moss” on your channel. Richard's been in so much, fiction and not. He appears in Mighty Boosh and Nathan Barley for a start. His shows like Gadget Man and Travel Man are class TV, especially Travel Man as it’s funny, interesting and he shows a lot of his natural personality as well as his comedic persona. He was recently in Last One Laughing, a show hosted by Jimmy Carr where 10 famous comedians stay in a room for 6 hours and they’re not allowed to laugh, also very good TV. The Big Fat Quiz if you want a challenge and a laugh, he and Noel are the greatest duo. The whole nation is waiting for him to appear on Taskmaster though 😂

Olivia Hampson

You need to watch man to man with Dean Learner. It’s on YouTube and features an episode with Garth. The whole series is amazing.

Chris Halsall

I think this series is my favourite reaction you've ever done. I really think you would like Travel Man, Toast of London, and also Jam (Chris Morris). I personally do not like Boosh but many love it.

Jamie Sherry

You guys love Ayoade. You also love travelling. You would clearly love Travel Man.

Jamie Sherry

*Seductive delivery* It’s egg in soup. Here….Let me cut up your pork pie.

Conor Doherty

There are 2 episodes of extended interviews on youtube - with the cast in character, which are absolutely hilarious and are well worth a watch... 👍🏻

Michael

Richard is in the first series of the mighty Boosh...replaced later bby Matt berry...Matt also features in House of Fools and stars in Toast of London...all weird and very funny

Paul Liversage

In re the sneezing: I once sneezed mid-dump. Greased lightning.

Steve Moppett

Matt Berry is a very talented vocalist and multi instrumentalist. He's recorded several albums and plays live shows with his band. However, on his records he plays just about everything himself. Check out this epic from him. You may even want to react to this and particular track with a view to enjoying his other recordings. https://youtu.be/_Ev0xiOKvZI

Andy Williams

The characters Dean Learner and Garth Merenghi reappear in another series called Man to Man with Dean Learner in a comedy chat show format. There are 6 episodes. There is also Darkplace Illuminatum and Horrificata Illuminata, where the characters are interviewed about working on Darkplace. There are other bonus DVD videos available too.

Aaron

Oh yeah, 'course, lol.

Joe Thornhill

There was a follow up called 'Man to Man with Dean Learner', it wasn't as good, but it had some good moments.

Leeham Pickles

Sure, some shows like red dwarf etc aren't really effected by it - the joke pacing can handle it. Stuff like darkplace however is quite reliant on timing and all that. It just seems like it's become a habit of pausing on every big laugh. Anyway all good, quality show picks mostly 🤷‍♂️

Ash Allen

I guess that must be it.

R Lawrence

I hear you bud, but he's damned if he does, and damned if he doesn't. Can't please everyone! Also, it looks like they've just got home from some sort of night out here, and may be a bit worse for wear - not complaining at all as I thought this reaction was hilarious, and a keeper!

Phil Robinson

Fairly certain he's taking the piss out of that obnoxious YT trope! I wouldn't worry!

Phil Robinson

God, that was an awesome reaction for this last episode, so many laughs - thank you for watching this show, you'll never forget it. For better or worse...

Phil Robinson

Definitely the latter.

Phil Robinson

There is a 2 hour plus DVD commentary from Garth, Dean and Todd here https://youtu.be/_qy9LC00WHE?si=aXaevJqq4SmX-zow

Nathan Daly

Travel Man is great full of Moss and Special guests

Nathan Daly

I'm glad you reacted to this. I'd tried to watch it before, but for some reason I couldn't get into it. This time I really enjoyed it and I'm sure I'll be revisiting the series in the future.

Will

I don't really mind the odd pause or rewind, he does pick up on a good few bits he's missed and goes back. It's the frequent interpretation of the flow, pauses on virtually every laugh - which i guess is ironically to try not to miss stuff. Also I guess to extend the video for youtube income 🤷‍♂️ genuinely meant as constructive comments btw. It's just a reaction channel - not that deep as the kids say.

Ash Allen

KB, maybe best to do a little rewind whenever you hit a pause in case you do it mid-sentence in the show and miss a line of dialogue.

Fordy7169

Yep, i'm shocked that he hasn't reacted to Toast of London yet, it's the perfect blend of IT crowd and Darkplace.

Ben

Toast of London is very similar to this show and is co written by Matt Berry. The actor who plays Garth Marenghi also features in it now and agian.

Ben

“Danger 5” has the same over the top comedy / pseudo retro over dub sound and washed out video … also some scenes with mock up dioramas instead of large backlot scenes . Same producers as ‘Italian Spiderman’

Albanacher

There's a spin off show called Man to Man with Dean Learner. Richard Ayoade, as Dean Learner interviews different people each week, the first being Garth Marenghi.

Neal Murdoch

The wonderful Richard ayoade is also in mighty boosh which you will be ready for after watching this show

Rebecca Musson

Not a huge deal indeed, just occasionally feels like he's missing out on the full experience of viewing something for the first time. 90% of the time he pauses, laughs - by the time he resumes he's "calmed down" and misses the timing of a rolling laugh and gags pass by - if you watch as intended you get hit by the timing as you're still taking in the last bit. It feels often as if the laugh has been and gone due to pausing. It was matt berry's one track lover pause that made me think oh that's a shame.. that's a bit of a ruined first time.. Anyway, good stuff overall - getting exposed to ultra classics like this can only be good and he's obviously still getting a lot out of it.

Ash Allen

Yeah it was a little excessive in this one, it mostly doesn’t bother me if they rewind, but they interrupted one of Ayoade’s funniest lines this episode. It looked like the line didn’t even register with them because they cut him off mid sentence then talked over him as they resumed. It was the pussy line around 15:30. Not a huge deal I’m just pointing it out.

James Ellison

Agree with you KB, in that you should absolutely rewatch OFAH together, but you absolutely should not start the rewatch in 2025... There's so many other great shows out there for you to get to yet, and waiting longer will only enhance the rewatch experience for you when it does eventually happen. As always I'm enjoying the reactions, so no hate from me whatever show you decide to watch with QB alongside or after Derry Girls!

ryung246

Well it's not like the episodes flow on from each other in any kind of logical sequence is it? Each one is it's own ball of weirdness. Watched a few more (including the Alien eye assrape and anal birth one), and I think I "get" it as far as I can. Just deliberately goofy weirdness that does make me laugh.

Oliver

Jeeze the pausing on everything.. gotta let stuff play occasionally - interrupting the rhythm and timing.

Ash Allen

Oh wow, you're really starting to use circles and arrows to obvious things in your thumbnails, now?

Joe Thornhill

If you love Matt Berry's unique tone and delivery of dialogue, plus storylines full of ridiculous surreal nonsense, then you've got to do TOAST OF LONDON

Dan Haynes

Same. Kb would love the mighty boosh

Cotton

how did a twat like you end up with a queen like mrs B !!

Isaac Steele

if you sneeze and fart at the same time, you take a screenshot of yourself - bob mortimer

Doug

I so wish they’d made more of these. But I’d really recommend the sequel (kind of). Man to man with Dean Learner. In which Richard Ayoade plays a chat show host and Garth Morenghi (not his real name) play a different guest every week.

Adam Druett

I'll second the Mighty Boosh recommendation... But, we must do "Man to Man with Dean Learner" first.

Stephen

So you deliberately watched the final episode first and are bemused by the fact you couldn't follow along?

Manly Stump

Ok so here are some reasons to do the mighty boosh! In every episode they break into at least one ridiculous song! One of the main characters is a talking Gorilla called Bolo, and first series they live in a zoo full of talking animals! Matt Berry plays the owner of the zooniverse! I think QB will enjoy the songs they are very weird and silly!

Richard Stokes

QB would enjoy some Travel Man episodes with Richard Ayoade. His presenting style is muppetry.

Julian T

I'm just patiently waiting for Boosh!

Gary Evans

King Boomer, There is one more episode in a way. It's all the interviews they did together that you see during the episodes. So one more to go!

Little Lances

Matt Berry is a Musician with multiple albums, should check them out on streaming platforms :) , also please watch The Mighty Boosh :o)

Stephen Lee

😂🥦 Great reaction. A show that is somewhat similar to Garth Marenghi's Darkplace is Steve Coogan's 'Dr. Terrible's House of Horrible'. ---------------------------------------------------- Copy-paste from Wiki ; Dr. terrible's House of Horrible is a satirical British comedy horror anthology series created by Graham Duff, who co-wrote the series with Steve Coogan. BBC Two broadcast the series in 2001. The title parodies Amicus Productions' anthology film Dr Terror's House of Horrors (1965). Coogan presents each episode as Dr. Terrible, and plays various roles throughout. The show spoofs the British horror films of Amicus Productions, Hammer Film Productions, and Tigon British Film Productions, and most particularly, such noted 1970s anthology series as Roald Dahl's Tales of the Unexpected and Thriller, with Amicus films, both series utilising different, well-known ensemble casts in each episode. Horror film veterans Honor Blackman, Graham Crowden, Sheila Keith, Joan Greenwood and Angela Pleasence each guest-starred in an episode, in a pastiche of their earlier film performances. Mark Gatiss, John Thomson, Simon Pegg, Ronni Ancona and Warwick Davis also appeared. ---------------------------------------------------- Dr. Terrible may be difficult to find, it is on a large DVD collection of Coogan's work called 'Complete Coogan'. The 'Complete Coogan' collection also contains other Coogan character episodes that you have yet to see. Various Paul and Pauline Calf misadventures and also a Portuguese singing sensation called Tony Ferrino, he's kind of a cross between Julio Iglesias and Tony Montana.

Jason Scade

So sad it ends so quickly. I liked getting little tastes of it in places after it ended. Like the official music video of Super Furry Animal's "Runaway" Directed by Richard Ayoade, starring Matt Berry. Its no "One Track Lover", but it might be as close as this universe gets to it.

Kirk Deighton

The watch lol film with Ben stiller and others, bad but has Ayoade in it!

Dave L

Yes, Toast of London definitely absolutely has to be on the list at some point.

Ash X

Matthew Holness, who co-created and starred as Garth Marenghi, was the character Chris Parker in the very first episode of Friday Night Dinner, when he went to pick up a sofa and found out halfway through that his father had died. Then everything he drank was salty.

Ash X

I knew your reaction to One Track Lover would be great but omg :’)

Violet Linnington

What We Do In The Shadows with Queen B, Matt Berry is awesome in it and he doesn't even have the best character

bobsonian

I've just tuned into this for the last episode? WTF is this show? Funny reactions but is there any kind of ongoing plot or is every episode just a random bunch of weirdness? So far it just looks like one of those "the point is there is no point, the plot is there is no plot" shows.

Oliver

You just have to do The Mighty Boosh

Jooe

The only thing I didn't get is when Dag said "I won't rest until I find you a replacement" did he mean a new love interest or some sort of penile transplant?

R Lawrence

I know a lot of people have this idea the UK is wet, miserable and cold all the time, but in reality we have mild summers and mild winters too, so not really THAT cold, you want cold go to Wisconsin or New York, now that's COLD! I live in Snowdonia which is the most mountainous part of Wales and it's 45f here right now, so only 5 less than you, this evening it's 32f in New York at the same time as it is here right now, it's because of the Gulf Stream, without it we'd have the same winter climate as Newfoundland! Maybe that's why Bob Mortimer is such a huge fan of the Gulf Stream??? 🤣

Mark Jones

Man to man with Dean learner has to be the next one!

CONALL MCLAUGHLIN

Great film

Mark Jones

Man to Man with Dean Learner is Richard playing his character from Darkplace as a chatshow host, it's only 6 episodes and Garth Marenghi is one of his guests, then in the other 5 episodes it's Matthew Holness (who plays Garth Marenghi) playing a different guest character, so a perfect follow on show to this.

Mark Jones

I noticed he missed a joke with that word in but I didn't hear it.... I don't remember this episode.

R Lawrence

Moss wrote and directed a film called Submarine too. Difficult to describe but it's a coming of age film for a boy who I think is a bit autistic ( I think can't remember exactly). Really brilliant though at capturing moods, great directing

Richard Stokes

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooo you paused right in the middle of my favourite quote of the whole show and didn't go back!! "One of the main reasons I went into medicine was for the laughs - that and the pussy, and that dried up ten year ago if you'll pardon the expression."

Manly Stump

https://youtu.be/mifxRIvnaR8?si=eHVhQdXmqTKR4L5H

Tom Clancy

Usually some variation on prog/psychedelic-rock or folk music. I've only listened to a few albums so far but his latest 'Heard Noises' is just brilliant

Tom Clancy

There are two Darkplace full-length episode specials called 'Darkplace Illuminatum' and 'Horrificata Illuminata' both on YT you can watch next. So no need to be pissed off.

Joe Gardiner

The Double is a cracking film. Strange, in the best way.

Stephen

Exactly... It seems like a no-brainer to move on to Man to Man with Dean Learner next. It's only 6 episodes after all.

Stephen

"Moss" directed a film with Jesse Eisenberg in called "The Double". (Based on Dostoyevsky's novel "The Double") I haven't seen it but it looks interesting from the trailer and I just thought I'd mention it because I can't think of other things he's been in other than panel shows or stuff I haven't really watched where he is just being himself not acting or anything.

R Lawrence

"Now he’s knocking at both doors!" 🤣

James Ellison

Man to Man with Dean Learner!!!! Basically a talk show with 'moss' hosting. Closest thing you can get to a second series of Darkplace!!! WATCH IT!!!

Stuart

Ayoade rapping is S tier

Jamie

What genre?

R Lawrence

Matt Berry is an actual musician on the side, he's been releasing albums for years and they're actually fairly decent!

Tom Clancy

If you want more Moss, Travel Man is a perfect choice for both of you.

Jay

100% this. If you want to see Matt Berry singing then Toast of London is the way to go.

Shplod

Btw you should watch Toast of London and Year of the Rabbit with Matt Berry (YotR also has Matthew Holness aka Garth Marenghi in an episode).

QueenKennaofStormholt

I've been waiting for you guys to watch this one and hear One Track Lover

QueenKennaofStormholt

Yes 'Toast of London' is top Matt Berry

Fordy7169

The mighty boosh is the only course of action from here! Although an American comedy called Community has Moss writing and directing an episode (the pulp fiction one for those who know the show) and Matt Berry in one and it's as surreal and well written as this imo. Has Chevy Chase too! Love to see you react to that

Richard Stokes

One Track Lover is so great. If you guys love seeing Matt Berry burst into song, Toast of London has to be next on your watchlist!

Henry Graham

One Track Lover is such a killer song, love the 80’s sound of it

James Ellison

Hey Boomers, there’s a half hour extra on the dvd, and YouTube last i checked, called Horror Illuminatum (i think) it’s all interviews with Garth, Dean and Todd. It’s worth a watch. Also check out the follow up show "Man To Man with Dean Learner". It’s a late night talk show spoof. Ayoade hosts it as Dean Learner, Garth Marenghi is the first guest on it. It’s a different show but it’s funny and it’s almost like if Ayoade did Knowing Me Knowing You, but a darker and crazier version, one of the best moments is as gloriously badly made as anything in this show, a fake movie scene featuring Matt Berry and Ayoade battling giant wasps in helicopters above London!

James Ellison

Just so you know, there's a full version of the song from this episode, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JBleuU-BFdI

Tiberius

Had to watch the absolute joy on both your faces a second time during 'One Track Lover'. Yeah that might well be the best bit of this entire show.

Graeme Meek

That’s it now, you have to react to Toast of London QB will love it. Uncle is a good one too for musical numbers.

Brad

Well you have Man to Man with Dean Learner which is a spiritual sequel. It has both Matthew Holness and Richard Ayoade reprising their GMDP characters (well Garth is only in one episode with Richard playing the eponymous role). Matthew goes on to play a host of other characters

Sean Riley

wow, you two. Looking sharp.
