Here’s a classic Welsh folk song - Wales is famous for its music and there’s some decent Welsh-language bands and artists that aren’t well known outside of Wales

There’s a good 12 min video here from S4C (the Welsh channel) of Ruth Jones learning Welsh

And another one of Jo Scanlan who plays Terri in The Thick of It doing the same

(I could have sworn they had subtitles, I think I might have watched on BBC iPlayer where there tends to be)

That Welsh show was Pobol Y Cwm (pobble ee cum…), means People of the Valley, it’s a long-running Welsh soap opera

There’s definitely water in the background, it’s Barry *Island* 😄 (although to be fair it’s not actually an island)

Lots of people do, but it’s not, it’s just meant to be a Welsh in-joke that no one else understands

Aw, I forgot about the way they ended this episode. I see that the final was a callback to this, then.

It's interesting that this and Peep Show did a Christening episode around the same time, when it's hardly a done thing any more in the UK, according to recent figures. I wasn't baptized when I was born 40 years ago, but I was very much in the minority to not have been, back then, but only a minority do it now.

Yes it was a made-up joke to highlight the confusion of an Essex person trying to understand the humour of a different culture. Slightly inaccuracies with Gavin's new boss and work colleague in that they both have a more West/ Mid Walian accent not a South East WalesBarry/Cardiff accent (like Nessa and Dave) and they referred to playing Rugby 7-a-side when Cardiff and Barry are more football (soccer) towns amongst the populous.

Going into school after this episode aired was brilliant. Everyone was just shouting ‘You slag!’ To each other in the halls and corridors, it was amazing. The teachers had to ban the phrase after that and when they told us in assembly, some students did shout ‘You slag!’ at the teachers. They got detention for it, but we were all just rolling with laughter.

The Owain Hughes joke is meaningless, it's just supposed to be indicative of cultural differences. There's a fan theory going around but the makers have said there is no explanation.
