The Thick Of It S3 Ep2 REACTION!

Peter Capaldi is a god damn legend!

The Thick Of It S3 Ep2 REACTION!

Comments

Capaldi later played The Doctor in Doctor Who. He is a massive Whovian as well. Also a villain in James Gunn's The Suicide Squad.

there's endless missable lines in this show... but a nice one here is when malcom gets into the car with nicola right at the start of this episode, about the 1 min mark - "i'm actually very happy with my broadband provider" he says - lol - IE - obviously he's actually on the phone with someone else and he doesn't want nicola to know who that someone is, or what they're talking about, so he's pretending to be talking to a broadband salesperson...lol what's nice too is that nothing is ever made of that line, it doesn't add to the plot, you could EASILY miss it (i've seen this show a number of times and only noticed it now) - it's just a very subtle piece of character building - and what else is so great about this writing and scripting style is that despite being a great line with a lot of implications about malcoms character (that he lies), and nicolas character too (that he doesn't trust her, and she's incompetent enough to not notice he's lying) - it doesn't make a big deal out of itself or insist on itself as a line, like....there's not a later scene where he says "of course i was lying about the broadband shit, what are you stupid?" or something along those lines, right? as a writer you'd surely be tempted to put a scene like that in later to make sure the audience got the point, but the writer here is totally fine for it to be missed by the audience; even though it's genius... great show

he's a fucking kitted scarf, that twat!!

James West

He is also the estate agent in the episode of Spaced which KB is about to watch!

Dan Haynes

I thought I recognised him from somewhere

FRER Productions

“A face like Dot Cotton licking piss of a nettle” is one of the best insults ever written or said

Spoingus

Veep is amazing.

Kevin Liversage

I don't know if anyone's said it yet, but the show had a specific "swearing consultant" who made sure all the insults were spectacular.

Alex West

British, so obv I got the reference, however I remember the first time I watched this series when I was younger there were a TON of references I didn’t get, yet it’s often the case that the delivery/rhythm is so funny regardless, or there’s enough context clues to what it might mean.

Mark Fraser

Capaldi is superb. Armando Iannucci is a brilliant writer & producer. Great series. Great reaction as always. I think you'd also really enjoy Veep. Same creative team and Chris Morris directs a fair few episodes. They share a similar satirical, behind-the-scenes political vibe. Both explore the dysfunction, incompetence, and backstabbing of political life with biting humor and sharp dialogue. However, Veep leans more toward fast-paced, absurdist comedy with relentless insults, while The Thick of It has a darker, more realistic tone centered on UK government bureaucracy. I enjoy both - but Veep is brilliant in its own way and think it would be a great addition to the channel. Maybe watch In The Loop when you're done with The Thick Of It. Iannucci was hugely inspired by Yes Minister and Yes Prime Minister - again I think you'd enjoy those. Looking forward to the next one.!

And Jamie is the same

Jack Nicholas

I was mainly going by his request for a movie where he plays a villain. He plays a serial killer in a prime video show ‘the devil’s hour’

Andi Main

It gets better too

Kevin Liversage

You laughed but there's no way you got the Dot Cotton reference

makadeni123

The actor who plays the Guardian journalist who Tucker accuses of being "handsy" plays Clinton Baptiste, the psychic from S1 E3 of Phoenix Nights

Dan Haynes

Although he's probably scarier as the Doctor in Doctor Who! :D

Will

Capaldi is especially on FIRE in this episode, it's astonishing. Those "death stares" are legendary. Not that he ever "phones it in" of course. No one can deliver that sort of dialogue in the way he can.

Phil Robinson

Yes! I do miss him randomly silently reaching out of shot for his little book.

Phil Robinson

16:30 "Don't get up, I'm not Viagra"? LOL.

Joe Thornhill

I just can't watch the scene (specifically at 11:25) and not think of his war speech from Doctor Who. And I kind of want to see Boomers reaction to his acting in it with little to no context.

Joe Thornhill

You should watch In The Loop when you’ve finished the Thick of It, imagine it takes place in an alternate universe - Malcolm is still Malcolm, and Chris Addison (Ollie) plays a very similar character but not the same

Kieran B

He was in the second suicide squad movie

Andi Main

It's the best show ever made!

John Dawber

THE KRAKEN AWAKES!!!!!

Dryfesands

what happened to your little book you used to write british swear terms and insults in. good job you lost it before starting in the thick of it, it would be overflowing

Jed Baker

You will need to watch the film, In The Loop, Tucker in the USA
