Reanimation by Linkin Park is a 2000’s classic. Almost every remix surpasses what they did on hybrid theory and features some GOATS of their time such as Johnathan Davis amongst other influences LP had while making their debut hit album.

John Lennon/Plastic Ono band is a 10/10 album and has aged much better than some Beatles albums. By far the best solo project by an Ex-Beatle.

Graduation is better than Late Registration

Do you think the most critically acclaimed and celebrated albums are the best way to get into an artist’s discography? Like for example would you recommend someone start with your decade list albums to get into those artists/bands?

Stefan Lal

Physical releases of Albums should always come with lyric sheets (Unless it's an instrumental album, obviously)

Nicole dollanganger lyrics are some of the best in recent years, especially when compared to that of Lana del Rey and Melanie Martinez. I would even put her in the same tier as BjĂśrk musically and lyrically.

Jordan Fairbairn

Low and Heroes > Hunky Dory and Ziggy Stardust. Even Bowie’s health during that time was >>>>>>

Diego Martinez

if astroworld came out today it would still feel brand new. travis scott mixes up his flow frequently, the beats on most songs are STILL fresh. this album is one that will inspire future artists

Ken_Broth

bands like butthole surfers and the jesus lizard were extremely important bands that not many actually seem to care about, yet we wouldn’t have bands like Nirvana or Melvins without them

kid is gone

Sun o))) is a minimalist and maximalist band at the same time

Lift your skinny fists by gybe would not be as popular or seem as ambitious to people if the album was formatted differently. Ex: instead of 4 songs of 20 minutes each, break it up into several songs of average radio friendly length, while still having the exact same album runtime.

Which Brockhampton member do you think would make the best solo album (excluding Ameer and KA who've already done solo projects).

Swaggurai

The end of your Oliver Tree interview was staged

NPR tiny desk is just MTV Unplugged 2

Chris Hickson

If you had to date either Ed or David from 90 Day FiancĂŠ whom would you choose

HARD FUCKING AGREE

Diego Martinez

Thoughts on the current Metalcore scene?

Is it ever weird enough?

Cleanwolf

Sorry about this, I was high when I typed this

Beatles members ranking goes 1. George 2. Paul 3. John 4.Ringo

Too much singing has ruined kids shows on far too many occasions. For example the shows Steven Universe and Bob's Burgers are two great shows, with great plotlines, that I love dearly but nowadays I am overwhelmed with cringy scenes that involve the characters breaking out into song for little to no reason at all. It's a shame because when these shows started out there was barely any music at all.

Try your local bar band or something then! Smaller venues are great

Brendan

There really isn’t much competition lmao. I thought it was ok apart from the final track, really excited for the second installment they were talking about.

Brendan

For one of the biggest influential bands in canadian history, Gordon Downie of the Tragically Hip really didn’t have the most amazing voice.

The Caretakers Everywhere at the end of time really did deserve consideration as the album of the decade. Despite its 6 hour length, it was probably one of the most creative and immersive experiences of the decade. I also can’t remember a musical moment that crushed souls that much in the 2010s.

Jack Bayley

The Deathcore scene is underrated in the Metal genre.

Chunky Shrapnel is the best live album of 2020

Aydan Rittel

Prince has the best discography of all time.

superdude75561

You should do more Starter Pack vids

Arnarok

Injury Reserve would’ve become a staple of the jazz rap genre and conquered hip hop if Groggs hadn’t passed.

Yttres

Man, they new wave stuff is amazing also, they went weak in the 90's tho

I think that people should think production the same as composition on an importance scale, not only in hip hop and electronic genres. A lot of modern albums can sound generic, emotionless, and weak, wasting all the artistic work that rests. This is visible on modern pop, rock, and metal, which result in boring albums that feel like it was made by AI. I wish that more musicians take more risks and make it more interesting. I would also remark that this must be thought in context, raw and clean productions works depending on the intentions. I love overproduced music the same as lo-fi.

Wesley Willis deserves way more recognition and respect than he’s currently getting. He was a progenitor of modern day meme music, having a huge inspiration on the genre. His also has one of the most interesting life stories in music. Everyone needs some Rock n’ Roll McDonald’s in their lives

lowkeymatt

Black Eyes from the A Star is Born is just a worse version of Roadhouse Blues by the doors

Bon Iver would be way better if he never worked with Kanye.

ari

Imagine Dragons is not that bad. I thought smoke and mirrors was at least a light 7.

Benjamin Lisboa

Discord should have conversation possibilities through different Discords.

Something

Concerts would be way better if people were quiet during the performance. I go to see my favourite artists perform their songs, not to hear drunk people mumble the words, scream. and jump directly into me. It's not a realistic dream but the "atmosphere" is the main reason I don't see artists live.

Yanny

Emily Montes's Emily Rose is the album of the year. It captures the emotions of isolation and the experience of childhood better than any other artist, her production is cutting-edge and far beyond what the PC Music gang is creating, and her short song lengths are gaming the streaming system for replay value

Jacob Dickens

Pitchfork be like “LJA DripDicc artfully subverts language with infectious lines such as ‘fucked a bitch that kinda look like Frida Kahlo’”

thundercat is a better producer than he is a solo artist

Harvey Greene

Syd Barrett's Pink Floyd would have developed into something greater, than the actual Floyd.

Barter 6 is Young Thugs best album to date. While not his most adventurous project, the dreamy/intoxicating vibes remain consistent throughout the track list and the album flows very nicely from start to finish. It doesn’t suffer from the unnecessary amount of filler tracks that made So Much Fun overstay its welcome. And the minimalist/hazy production gives Thugger a lot of leeway to utilize his unique vocal style and incorporate aesthetically pleasing melodies, without some of the over-the-top vocal inflections that made for a couple awkward moments on Jeffrey. (i.e., Seal Arffing, Fat Albert Grunting)

Alex Berry

Futurama > Rick and Morty

Andrew Shaktah

I was wondering about your classic week reviews of the past two years. I know you've said before that reviewing classic albums of the 20th century feels kind of moot since so much has been said about those records, and that you switched up to early 21st century albums to circumvent that feeling. I was wondering if you've felt better/more excited about classic reviews since making that change? Also wondering how you make those decisions in terms of labeling newer albums "classic" since theres less consensus on their classic status compared to the older albums

Cameron Ford

Money is the least interesting and original song on Pink Floyd's Dark Side of The Moon. Money also totally breaks up the album's flow if streamed front to back sounding like a standard blues scale rock bop written and thrust in as if someone just needed to include cash register noises and the record label required 1 song that just catered to masses and didn't have that space age sound found throughout the rest of the album.

maxM@x

Gang of Four doesn't get the appreciation they deserve when talking about the post-punk classics. Television and Joy Division were great and did a lot for the genre, but Entertainment! + Solid Gold is the best 1-2 post-punk punch of that original era.

Abe Froman

I'm going to have to disagree here. He is one of the most popular artists in blues/blues rock today, but the genre itself is unfortunately ignored by the mainstream. As a big Gary fan who's enjoyed each of his albums and seen him live three times, I think his songwriting is hit or miss.

Paul Prete

ARTPOP had the potential to be lady Gaga’s best album if it didn’t have so much filler. The highs are higher than on any of her other albums

Melon, hello. Do you have a skincare routine? Please tell me you are putting sunscreen on that melon ball head of yours and protecting it when out in the sun. Or do you tend to lean more towards hats?

Michaela Janicki

I feel like your rating/enjoyment of the saturation albums were more dependent on the order they came out in instead of the quality of the albums instead. I get that the albums in the series all have a similar vibe and sound to them, but I think saturation II and III both have a more diverse and colorful sound than the first, and really just improved upon almost every element. If saturation II or III came out first chronologically, it would have gotten the higher score of the 3.

LCD Soundsystem is the only band with too much cowbell

Desole is the best song out of all the song machines the Gorillaz have put out yet. It’s groovy yet emotional, and the vocal performance from Albarn and Diawara fits the instrumental unlike the other song machines

Not a hot take, but I just wanna ask why isn’t there a plunderphonics album based around the xylophone? Like, if someone made a xylophone sampler where the sample was ringed out to the tone a xylophone, that’d be amazing

Lil Baby is one of the most overrated rappers in hip hop right now. He’s a very mediocre lyricist and has very few flows at his disposal. Can’t believe some people think he’s the goat rn smh...

Greta Van Fleet feels like one of the last great chances of a traditional rock band crossing over in the mainstream. Sure their sound is far from original, but they had a lot of momentum from fans and their label after the From the Fires EP and carried that throughout 2018. However when their train wreck of a debut album dropped, it killed all their momentum in a matter of weeks and quickly became forgot about. They had great potential to be a gateway into classics like Zeppelin and Rush but also modern rock bands like Rival Sons and Dirty Honey

Cason Handy

Snoop dog is more popular for smoking weed than he is for rapping

Adam mezzarone

Vibraslaps are easily the most annoying percussion instruments and if it wasn't for the ukulele they'd probably be the worst instrument overall

Caden Meyer

The Wild, The Innocent And The E Street Shuffle is an underrated Bruce Springsteen album and one of the most underrated albums of the 70's. Amazing and ambitious songwriting as well as great flow and energy throughout. An equally beautiful and fun listen.

Not every unrealeased project from a late artist should be released, out of respect for the artist.

The Roots are overrated and only receive the acclaim they do because they were one of the first to incorporate live instrumentation in hip hop.

Power by Kanye is the best use of a sample in any song. Kanye is the 21st century schizoid man

Jacob B

Having listened to so much music throughout your career, do you have a memory bank of mostly everything you've heard or do you still struggle to remember the name of a song/album from years ago if it comes on?

Andrew Guerci

Nobody should be surprised when the next Kids See Ghosts album is a 0

Post-Punk as a genre ran its course in its time, and even had a famous revival in the early 2000’s, but it’s still a fertile genre that is sorely missing in the modern underground scene, particularly post-punk inspired bands that aren’t just Unknown Pleasures rip-offs. Bring on the Post-Punk Revival-Revival

You should use more latin phrases in your reviews in lieu of adjectives cuz their summative nature makes things easier and might prompt people to look up the phrases you use

GN alkhouri

Everyone is talking about whether or not the album version or the studio version of i by Kendrick Lamar is better, but no one seems to be talking about the erratic and completely bonkers live performance he did on SNL. I'm not saying this version is the best but it needs to be in the discussion

Kyle Cahill

Between the Buried and Me don’t get the credit they deserve for changing progressive metalcore and popularizing many obscure sounds in prog music. Their inclusion of folk, avante garde and house music in albums like Colors and The Great Misdirect often go unnoticed

The movie waves has an incredible sound track!

Dave Matthews Band is the butt end of a lot of jokes and honestly rightfully so, but that being said Carter Beauford is one of the most talented and entertaining percussionists in the industry.

1990s Bob Dylan is the best Bob Dylan

The Eminem Show is better than the Marshall Mathers LP. The lyrics are much more diverse and mature, and the production is far superior; almost every beat is a banger, while a lot of beats on MMLP are just too minimalistic to be exciting. Plus Kim is one of the worst track of the "classic" eminem era.

Tristan Noel

Frank Zappa > King Crimson

Ween is probably the most talented Alternative band to date. I cannot believe that they're still flying under people's radars. Also extra credit goes to their amazing album "The Mollusk" for being one of the main inspirations for Hillenburg to create Spongebob.

Naming your album after a song that's on it, is boring and uninspired.

Would you ever consider doing a top 500 albums of all time? Or something similar

Stefan Lal

Zero Suit Samus is a mid-tier character.

DJ Khaled is Kanye without his rap skills or his leftfield edge: they both transitioned from being a dj/beatmaker into creative "directors", are dependent on the creativity of others during their late period albums, have living meme status as well as bold and ego-centric personalities, routinely suffer from success, loudly broadcast their love for their children, and claim they are the best.

Not much of a hot take. Ben Shapiro’s father’s method of classifying music is stellar evidence to me as a studying classical musician that he has no place educating anyone in music. Even in a society as sometimes snobby as classical music and classical music education, these boundaries that Shapiro Dad has set are very regularly stepped out of. If I could, I’d revoke his music degree

Diego Martinez

CDs are still a fantastic way to buy music, the sound quality is better than streaming a lot of the times, and liner notes and physical packaging is always a bonus. used sometimes it's cheaper than a download, new it's only usually a couple bucks more.

Of all of the bands that people like to dogpile on (Nickelback, Imagine Dragons etc.) I don't see nearly enough hate for Disturbed. Of all of the music that I once adored in my youth, they are the one band that I can't defend on hardly any level. Their music is generic and pandering. It sounds like it was focus grouped and cranked out on assembly line. Lyrics range from inane platitudes, deep misogyny, and complete non sense. And still, they seem to be generally liked and nobody picks on them. What the heck? Also, bear in mind that this comes from a dude who can still get down with some Korn, occasional Bizkit, etc.

London Calling has the greatest album cover of all time. The image of Simonon smashing his bass is iconic and timeless, and the symbolism of the lettering and The Clash's intent to have it be the "last rock record" is even more impactful because they delivered so hard.

Ben

Ambient us an underappreciated genre, it is very unique and thought-provoking. As one of the few genres that can be both breathtaking in its beauty, and haunting in its darkness. Also for the fact that you can really put your own meaning to it, I don't see why it isn't really that popular.

UFO is one of the most underrated 70's rock bands ever, and their absolute triumph of a live album Strangers in the Night with guitar savant Michael Schenker deserves to be talked about more in the conversation of not only the greatest live albums, but the greatest hard rock albums period.

Future Funk is the best genre of dance music.

Daughters>Godspeed You! Black Emporer>Swans>Sun Kil Moon> Father John Misty>Modest Mouse (I was very tempted to put The Postal Service Give Up here. They all scratch a different itch but what are your thoughts?)

gang of four deserve more recognition than joy division

Gary Clark Jr. is a crucially underrated artist. He brings the jazz and blues style sound back to the modern era of music, he is able to provide relevant social commentary to his music (ex. This Land, What About Us), and he has a unique voice that is reminiscent of Muddy Waters and B.B. King while still maintaining his own vocal style. And he still doesn't get any mainstream recognition apart from his Grammy wins.

was there any good dubstep music??

Beck Trebesch

Monterey Pop is the greatest concert film ever made. The Lineup, the editing, the show-stopping final performance by Ravi Shankar. It is an exceptional example of the transportive powers of both cinema and live music. A visceral and mind-melting love letter to both mediums.

People only dislike DAMN because they think in comparison it's worse than TPAB/GKMC, in reality, compared to other rap artists that released the same year, DAMN is actually still a very good album, if not the best. In the year it came out it was definitely worthy of more widespread praise.

Just because a song doesn't have much or any gritty or experimental qualities doesn't always mean it's losing its musical quality. I often hear people argue that certain songs or artists are bad because it isn't as risky or out there as it could be. Sometimes, a simple yet well-made song can still be great.

House of Balloons is a defining project of the 2010s. With that mixtape, The Weeknd changed the sound of popular music and ushered in the current era of moody, atmospheric production and dramatic, dark lyrics. Not to mention, Drake would be nowhere near his level of superstardom if he hadn't blatantly copied The Weeknd's mixtape style on Take Care and future projects.

Lovefool by the cardigans is a classic. The smooth and catchy melody, hilariously dark lyrics (especially on the bridge), and the excellent, shining, and playful outro just make the song perfect. 10/10

Brendan

I went on a whole tangent but realized it was pretty pointless. In short this is just wrong, they’re extremely popular. My mom who doesn’t listen to much music at all knows of them (even if she doesn’t care for them).

Brendan

KISS is just a blue pill version of the New York Dolls

John Pindzia

An artist that “rips off their contemporaries” shouldn’t take away from the enjoyability of the music and it shouldn’t be seen as a con in your reviews. Half of the time we can’t be so certain of who is ripping off of who, and maybe they just had similar ideas that ultimately came off as one “ripping them off”. All and all just sounds a little unfair to discredit an artist for that

Drake Parker

Is anybody skeptical about artificial vocals or music, like who's to say that nowadays alot of these posthumous albums are artificially generated

People who give unpopular opinions without explaining themselves care more about attention than arguing, and this series is weaker for it. You're a great speaker, Anthony, but even you can't make stating obvious retorts to ridiculous statements interesting to watch.

Owen W

You should give scores to track reviews

Drake Parker

A Moon Shaped Pool is better than In Rainbows

Kyle Cahill

You can't be an experimental rap artist if you don't produce your own beats

Kyle Cahill

Steely Dan's Two Against Nature is underrated. I think people hate on it just because of the Grammys giving it Album of the Year over Kid A and The Marshall Mathers LP, but on its own merits, while it has more in common with Donald Fagen's solo work than 70s Steely Dan, it is really solid and unfairly overlooked

Triple 9

Jaco Pastorius is an underrated musician amongst Gen Z, mainly due to his early (and most important) work not being widely accessible.

Logan Colburn

Ska can't have a comeback because Ska never left.

EdibleMessiah

Pop punk is the worst mainstream genre of all time.

Crust punk is painfully overlooked as a music movement I feel like it thoroughly channeled an even more advanced concept than hardcore initially posed by rejecting modern society even further Rather than trying to politicise it too much it felt much more from the heart and saying a big fuck you to the world at large with many Crusties squatting, going homeless and living on the lamb and supporting their unsettled communes like family Even if it is a glorified subset of grindcore to an extent it’s still got some vicious audio violence

If you weren’t reviewing an album and the first few songs on it were really bad, would you still listen to it all the way through?

Stefan Lal

Miley Cyrus and her Dead Petz isn't that bad, it's at least better than oczy mlody

Their first 4 albums are very good, then they become even more famous than they were yet, and the massive success surely led to eccessive hate

Spotify, and other music services, shouldn't base all of their subscription payout on cite/app wide subscription listening numbers. They should at least split the payout 50/50 with a non agrigated individual subscribers actual percentage of listening history. If I listen to my favorite authentic cult band 70% of the time I don't want most of the money I'm paying to go to top 40 pop or bot farms which multiple artists have admitted to using to boost cite/app wide subscriber listening numbers. What's the return on few thousand paid Spotify accounts run by a bot farm compared to returns on fake views. At least a few hundred thousand a month. 😥 This isn't the only article or instance I've seen of listener fraud. https://www.theregister.com/2018/02/23/bulgarian_spotify_scam/

You claim that there are certain styles that you’re biased against, but you’re actually so well-rounded of a listener it’s actually commendable. With your job, do you ever feel forced to be interested in and knowledgeable about every big genre of music? Or is that something that comes more organically to you?

Diego Martinez

math teachers need to start using synthesizers alongside their algebra lessons, as audio offers an intuitive explanation and way of understanding sine waves in a way that graphs alone may not as easily convey

If TikTok gets banned, it will impact the music industry more than we realize. In its already short lifespan, TikTok has led to some interesting things happening on the charts: songs that are more danceable or “meme”able are getting more streams due to the app. If it suddenly goes away, I think we will see a huge shift in the Billboard Top 100

tryhard

Guilty pleasure music doesn’t exist. It’s just music that people are too afraid to say is good.

Brendan

Hot take: Coldplay is pretty overhated. They really aren’t that bad I really don’t understand all the hate they seem to get

As much praise Radiohead is given in the music community, they are barely talked about in the mainstream when discussing best 90s bands. This is very sad considering how amazing they are and most people will only know them for Creep.

Summerteeth by Wilco was one of the last great pop-rock albums of the 90’s and the most of the 2000’s. It remains an outlier because it’s sandwiched between nu-metal, post-grunge, and the garage rock revival. It still ranks as one of the best albums, to this day, to pay homage to the bands of the 60’s and 70’s without sounding derivative.

Having a broad music taste is underrated. Not only does it mean you are able to enjoy more music, which is a good thing on itself, but also that you are able to find the good points in any project, which requires a fair bit of music knowledge. Yet many people act as if having more than a few artists/genres you enjoy means you have no taste. I mean, if someone genuinely likes Nav's records, I say more power to them. I wish I could.

Pablo Perez Martin

Your political takes are more consistently on point than your musical ones and you should hard pivot to being the anti-Ben Shapiro 24/7

Come on Anthony I’m still waiting on the gaming channel you promised in your live show...

Anthony fr tho, if you ever want to take a break, don't think twice. We understand.

Siamese Dream is one of the most criminally underrated albums of all time. It doesn’t come up enough in conversations. One of the best shoegaze records ever.

Kendrick's rock project will be his worst (i hope not, but i think it will be).

Vipul Konnur

SOUL LADY by Yukika is one of the best Pop albums of the year

Cuphead's soundtrack needs more love

Vipul Konnur

AMEN

Vipul Konnur

I catch a lot of shit for not appreciating an artist's lauded back catalogue work as much as the album that drew me to the artist in the first place. If a less heavily praised new release makes a positive first impression on me, it's going to be hard for that classic work of theirs to top it in my mind. And that's okay.

If you think about it, Damon Albarn is actually one of the best hip hop producers, (when he does hip hop)

Riley Schmedeman

The spirit and ethos of punk should never be limited to just the hardcore music scene. Anything that breaks harmful and conventional norms and challenges oppression and the status quo through art is punk.

Devin

Denzel Curry has the most consistent discography in modern hip hop

slowthai deserved more flak for his debacle at the NME Awards. Even if Katherine Ryan wasn't personally bothered by it, it's another example of a well-liked artist getting off relatively scot-free just because he later apologised for falling short of the already low bar of respect (and then playing victim in a song ĂĄ la Eminem)

Okra is the Russ of vegetables

When will you comeback with "review your music", it was really great and help some people who were unknown get exposure?

appreciate it, but don't worry :)

Mangos > Melons

are you a fan of any musicals, and have any of them impressed you with their production or lyricism or even story?

Meet The Woo will influence hip hop this decade as much as Flockavelli's did in the 2010s

Mori Kriman

Madonna’s antics overshadow how much on an influential artist she really is. She dropped fantastic new wave and pop records in the 80s and 90s including her self titled record and Like a Prayer, and was on the forefront of the techno and EDM inspired sounds that would be come popular in the late 2000s with the album Ray of light. She’s someone who should be more appreciated for sure.

Rush deserve a lot more credit, they've made some of the best prog and hard rock albums out there and each member deserves to be held as contenders for the best of all time at their respective instruments especially Geddy Lee

Trees of eternity showed so much promise as a metal project, and it's tragic that their story got cut short with the passing of their lead singer.

The Wall would be even better if “What Shall we do Now?” and full version of “The Show Must go On” made the tracklist. (Personally, I prefer “What Shall we Do Now” to follow the “Empty Spaces” over “Young Lust”)

Trent Reznor has aged better than any other rockstar in the world

Froggoking

Joji's pretty boy video narrative is better than the rocketship / space thing

Travis Scott’s music is more about vibe, texture, and aesthetic over song structure. He’s the Enya for young people.

Would you rather listen to 24 hours of Tom MacDonald music or 24 hours of Lil Dicky music?

SAMIR

Mayhem is one of the only black metal bands that doesn’t come off as just performative because they were really about that shit

Chrisp

not a hot take but i think a redux review of Mac Miller - Faces would be refreshing. considering the fact that you gave that mixtape a 6 initially and it appeared on your decade end-list, the lowest score to do so. also Long Live Mac
