She's just conflicted, I'd say. Their situation and all that food they are eating push her toward some questionable choices (wink, wink), yet she still makes an effort to be a good mother. She's not just going to sit back and watch them do things with each other. Yeah, it's not fair, but she doesn't have to be.

She has moved on from just doing something to help her son to initiating the need to help him but at the same time totally freaks out when her kids "take care" of the issue themselves. Could this be a huge subconscious guilt response? On the blessing front I also just realized that this power just might be the perfect ability to find their way out? Also it will be able to sus out hidden dangers as they continue to navigate the tunnels. Wonder what else they will find. If nothing else it will greatly speed up the exploration process.
