Hello !

For sure, Canute changed. I told you a long time ago that this character could take two paths : to make his dream come true, paradise in this world, to have that objective in mind and nothing else, or to do bad stuff for having it at first and then to become a big dictator. Clearly, he chose that second path, and ambition, power, ate him little by little. His dad was right, the Crown had him at the end.

Everything about him talking with the head of his dead dad, the former King, is so symbolic : he's not seeing him as a person but as an head, for when he died, when Askeladd killed him and Canute accepted it ; his dad is now giving him advices, telling him they are like each other and Canute agrees with it when before he hated his dad. It's also symbolic for the entire story and the evolution of both Thorfinn and Canute : both had their dad being killed in front of their young eyes and were haunted by that. But one spent entire years in the dark and finally found peace, and now Canute wants to be like this dad he admired and still admires. When the other one had a peaceful life but he's now into the dark, the rage and the shame, and he's now like this dad he hated and is ok with it. Canute just killed a brother he loved without even blinking.

I'm still french, so I'm still sorry if my english hurts you.

VINLAND SAGA 2X10 EXTENDED REACTION

Comments

I'm not even sure that he "feels" like he has to take drastic actions/decisions, because I don't think that's even something he wondered about, he hesitated to do. I think that, at this point, Canute is just doing stuff, following that path, and he's so certain of himself that he's just doing stuff, without asking himself the question why anymore, if it's truly necessary, is there another option, is is it moral or anything...

A very interesting episode for Canute's character. He feels like he has to take drastic actions to achieve his utopia. But to poison your own brother, who supported you completely? That is a very dark turn. Canute has decided that he is willing to do anything to achieve his heaven on earth. But can his judgment stay fair? Or has his moral compass already became corrupt? It's funny, in the first season King Sweyn tells Canute that he exiled his own father and took the crown because he thought he would do great things. But the will of the crown slowly influenced his decisions. Canute thought that Sweyn was clueless and that he would never fail like his father. But now, his path is looking very similar. Askeladd's 2 prodigies, Thorfinn and Canute. It's crazy how they went on such different paths after his death.

You know how much I loved Askeladd's character so I won't come back on that. Just, about season 2 being really different and some fans giving up on the anime because of that : I talked about it with my little brother, who watched the anime and told me he didn't like season 2 ; so now I progressed a little, I asked him if it was because of Thorfinn deciding to not fight anymore and his response was clear "yes, because he was a good fighter, I was not watching Vinland Saga for someone like that". Me, who loves to analyze things in shows/animes, I was waiting for that big change, it was meant to be, his character was written to evolve like that ; but I can understand that for people like my brother, who are just watching things for fun, they can feel like they came for one thing, it's not there anymore, so they leave.

Season two has a very different tone when compared to the first season. A lot of people don’t like it a complain that Thorfinn is weak. Personally I love the second season and I like it more than the first one, seeing Thorfinn evolve and not just be so single minded and focused on his “revenge”. Also Askeladd is a great character, for me he’s the second protagonist in the first season.
