What an episode, so emotional… To not have any opening scene made me think it would begin with something big, so when we saw Leif, I knew he and Thorfinn would be reunited. So I clearly had trouble being focused on what Canute and Askeladd were talking about, I was just waiting for it. I say since episodes that Thorfinn is old enough, strong enough, to come back home by himself if he wants to and he had Thors in his dreams (so his own conscience) telling him to do it, so clearly : he's blinded by his anger, this desire of revenge, but he also kills by choice each little voice in his mind telling to renounce.
Askeladd's plan was clearly a lot clever. He managed to prove to Floki that they're gonna be careful and protect Canute, but by being the one who hired the slave to play Canute but also the assassin who was supposed to kill him, he created that situation. And so that rumor of the King trying to kill his own son. After all of these big scenes, I clearly didn't expect to have Thorfinn who wants his duel with Askeladd NOW, and even less for Bjorn to take the priority. Everyone here, including the viewer, knew Bjorn was gonna die and that Askeladd was in fact just giving him a good death, a warrior death. But it was a surprise that it was also a friendly death.

I totally agree with you about Thorfinn and I would add that Thorfinn never imagined a life/future for himself, he has just that revenge on mind and he never thought about an "after" or "something else". The duel Askeladd/Bjorn was not a real duel, it was more a friendship declaration in fact, on both sides.

2024-04-19 08:30:59 +0000 UTCLove this episode. The reunion of Thorfinn and Leif goes about as well as I expect. Thorfinn is just not emotionally ready to face his family. If he stops before killing Askeladd, his whole life would have been wasted. I don't think he is ready to accept that , that he wasted all of his childhood with a pointless quest for revenge. He doesn't want to know about his family because he doesn't want to emotionally invest in anything that might take him away from his mission. Askeladd's master plan to force the king is fantastic. We know that he is willing to play dirty, even if it means sacrificing an innocent. Canute said he won't let it happen again, but will he be able to create his utopia without making some difficult choices? The duel between Askeladd and Bjorn is done beautifully. I believe Askeladd when he said Bjorn was his only friend. I also believe Askeladd when he says he hates Danes. Both can be true. We also see how Askeladd cared about him because he looked worried when he missed the vital spot and thought he caused his friend extra pain.
