Q1: I'm disappointed with how Lisa's powers were portrayed in this chapter regarding Paul. It seems the most she could gather was that he's somehow dangerous and knows them, which could be reasonable assumptions for any random, unaffiliated kid. From Lisa, this feels underwhelming. Furthermore, did she get nothing from his physical aspects, like his muscle control and whether his seemingly normal movements were consciously self-controlled? This portrayal makes Lisa's power seem weak and suggests she's a non-entity who just lucked out, rather than bringing unique skills to the team.

A1: My portrayal of Lisa's interaction with Paul is based on several factors:

• Paul as a "Shard Blind Spot": I'm operating on the premise that Paul is a "shard blind spot," due to his extended trigger event. This means Lisa cannot use her abilities directly on him to deduce more than surface tells and circumstantial evidence. (not relevant for this discussion)

• Abstract Danger Assessment (Pre-Meeting): Lisa already knew Paul was dangerous in an abstract sense before meeting him. Her shard had deduced the presence of a very powerful Thinker by extrapolating from the scale and masterful execution of his digital attack on Coil. Powerful Thinkers are inherently dangerous.

• Extrapolating Potential Danger: Her shard then assessed that such a potent Thinker ability likely has other forms of expression. As a point of reference, consider Number Man, whose mental abilities (primarily for math) can be creatively applied to make him physically formidable. Paul's mental abilities are regarded similarly, and the potential danger is scaled against his physical stature.

• Lethal Threat Assessment: Based on the above, Lisa's shard further deduced that if Paul decided to kill them (Brian, Taylor, Alec, and Lisa), they would die. Paul had displayed a streak of ruthlessness in his attack on Coil, lending credibility to the possibility that he could make such a decision.

• Evidence of Familiarity: Lisa's shard determined that Paul knew them from the very first seconds of their meeting. His statement, "You know who I am. Come outside," immediately implied familiarity. • Faithful Portrayal & Power Limitations: I have attempted to depict Lisa's ability as faithfully as possible, spending considerable time reviewing her point-of-view interlude from the source material to ensure the tone, style, and themes translated correctly. Her power isn't weak; rather, Paul is an inherently difficult person to "cold read." Without sufficient initial clues, her power cannot extrapolate significant data. Everything she gleaned was information Paul either couldn't hide(the scale of his attack on Coil) or chose not to(his willingness to kill her should she refuse his offer).

• The "Glitches" (Power Interaction): The glitches Lisa experienced occurred when she attempted to analyse Paul while he was, in turn, analysing her. Think of Lisa's ability as a mirror facing another mirror (Paul's "supralogical intuitions"). Both abilities are similar in function. The resulting "image" is superimposed infinitely, creating a logic trap. To avoid expending vast amounts of energy to escape this trap, Lisa's shard predicts such an event and preemptively tries to avoid it by "punishing" Lisa (causing the migraine) for attempting to focus on the trap.

Q2: It feels like Lisa made a huge logical leap regarding the exact nature of Paul's power. She shouldn't have enough information yet to make such specific deductions. Shouldn't she need to question and probe more before arriving at that kind of information?

A2: Lisa had been probing the situation for two hours prior to meeting Paul. She knew someone (or some group) had attacked Coil and had been actively trying to figure out who. She was already familiar with how dangerous this unknown individual or organisation was. Meeting Paul and putting a face to this "shadow" simply sped up the inevitable evaluation based on the groundwork her power had already laid.
