Here's a cool map. A forest temple in the Feywild. Although it could be any forest area, really.
The lore is about a n evil mage named Aldini who built an eldritch device capable of merging two living beings. It works by placing to lifeforms in the crystal pods. By activating the machine, both of them are merged into one in the upper crystal sphere. So pretty much this is the plot of The Fly, but in a fantasy setting.

Yeah he gets a tuned version of the chimera breath, our ranger was unlucky aswell even after studying Aldini's experiments from his diary granting him competence in the usage of the machine. They tried to interrogate Aldini (since in my storyline there is a corruption going on in the tree of life) but couldn't manage to get any information. The elf ranger ended up trying to fuse his mind with aldini's and put himself and the head of dead Aldini in the Chambers, their head fused and he is now had half Aldini's face and brain and half his elf-ranger brain and face, that was a very interesting strategy to try to get more informations regarding the corruption after failing an intimidation roll, he lost his darkvision and due to the poor sight of aldini has reduced hitting rolls, he also lost 4 of his charisma point but gained 1 intelligence and the ability to cast misty steps and eventually will gain more by tuning more and more with Aldini mind during the adventure, he will also have to roll saving throws not to get controlled by half Aldini's mind which will try to kill the party during the adventure
