It's all about the Wallriding and Grinding now, and the quite frankly insane shortcuts that these make possible. I'm pretty sure that that's also the purpose of the Peach Coins and Question panels in the open world. They teach you about the shortcuts that are possible in the open world and if you're on the main track, you're doing it wrong.
