Mid-video update + Q&A: Going forward

Hello all, and welcome to the mid video update for January -- a... slightly late edition, which makes sense given recent events! I think everyone knows what's happened in the US regarding trans people and such, which has been intensely depressing for me to say the least. On top of that, a lot of frustrating things have happened in my personal life, and I also had an elongated recovery from a wisdom tooth removal. All of this is why the last video ended up kind of late, since I got knocked out for three days and was in pain for another four or five, and why this video has ended up late. Here's hoping things improve from here...

At least, on the channel side of things, things have been going great. The last video has been performing AMAZINGLY and the feedback I've seen has been incredible. Thank you all so much for the positive reception; it took a lot out of me to make that video and I'm really glad it seemed to be worth it! And, on that note of making videos, let's take a peek at what's up next, and talk about general plans for the year.

February: Ai Mai Misuto! This is a title I thought had never heard of until a friend recommended it to me while I was searching for titles on DLSite to cover for this month. Then I saw a screenshot and realized this is one of like four gender bending VNs I downloaded as a little egg, and... wow, it probably would have made me take HRT way sooner if I could have actually read it back then. Very trans joy, very gender fluid, many gender fluids, very good game. Script process has begun.

March & Beyond: Let me pose a deceptively simple question: what does progressive writing under fascism look like? On the surface the answer may seem to simply be "promote progressive messaging," or "don't be fascist," but pray tell, what exactly is the impact of this - how do you make this have impact -when the world is visibly, at large, shifting towards enshrining conservative ideas in law, discouraging liberal positions, and outright vilifying, detaining, deporting, or even systematically murdering leftists and dissidents, who perform the crime of asking for human rights?

In my mind, if the election of funny orange man wasn't the point of the US crossing the rubicon, then the executive orders most certainly were. Another world superpower has embraced authoritarian and fascist thinking, and it's one that particularly has the power (and is using it!) to embolden these ideologies elsewhere, on top of empowering corporations responsible for mass killings and political fraud. It's gone from a neoliberal hellscape with a vague, if undeserved, "normalcy," to one which is blatant about its systemic and personal hatred for people who do not fit 1930s German ideals of "normalcy." We already weren't in a good era, but it's gotten even worse now.

So what does talking about anti-fascism, about feminism, about liberation, look like now, when we have moved even further away from those goals being tenable? I feel leftist writers at large are struggling with this, because our hypothetical worsts are becoming or have become realities, and our hopes for aversions are being squashed. The answer is simultaneously as simple as to continue writing radical works, and intensely complicated as the achieveability of our ideals feels like it grows ever more distance.

I am deeply despaired right now at being unable to see family and friends without wrangling them 8,000 kilometers across the ocean, and I am incredibly worried about my friends in the US who are rapidly losing support around them and have to find new ways to pursue the lives they want. I have more or less been downgraded to a second class citizen, wondering why I shouldn't just toss it out when I become a citizen here. Do I want to drown all of that out in works about joy and hope, or try to talk about resistance and solidarity through darker works?

Ultimately, I feel like I will keep covering the same kinds of works I always have, in my same style, but I suppose I am being forced to put even more consideration than ever into what I say, and how I encourage hope and solidarity, because yet another line has been crossed, and it is one that will encourage further crossings all over the world. I don't feel like I can just cover anything in a vacuum anymore, i.e, it suddenly feels a hell of a lot more 'real' to talk about transgender issues and discrimination when the grandest institutions in the US have decided against our existence. Fascist thinking in the Global North is no longer a niche and extremist position, but the recently enshrined normal for other countries to follow if they so desire -- and they do, because too few people give a shit to recognize it and stop it.

I guess my point in all this is that anti-fascism under fascism does not look or feel the same as anti-fascism against impending fascism, and I have to genuinely wonder what my optics should be and how they should change. The only constant, and something that I do for certain want to focus on this year, is the joy that exists in our lives, and will always continue to. I would love to talk about more works that show the richness of trans lives, the beauty in other cultures, and how the lives of the oppressed can be defined by positivity rather than our oppression. I believe even under these worsening circumstances, that is what can define our lives. I just wonder how to approach it all to make it feel true.

That's really it for now, I suppose. I apologize for this post being a downer in ways, but the world is a downer right now. I hope, going forward, I can continue to provide joy and hope for everyone, and we can stick through this together. As per usual, feel free to leave comments asking questions for me to answer in the Q&A segment. Oh, yeah, and suggest games for THE LIST, preferably things that inspire you. I think we all need it now.

See you all soon.

I've gone trough Minagoroshi no Otome with my very beginner level understanding of JP and it is a bit different from DEA. The approach that was taken is different from DEA, H-scenes take a significantly smaller portion of the story than the H-scenes in DEA. The story seems pretty ambitious, more so than DEA, and I think it is thematically deep. I think it should've been way longer than it is, I think the length is just barely above the length of DEA, while it's story was way more... expansive let's say. I feel like they struggled with time on this one. There are maybe some more subtle themes about the woman's struggle against patriarchy, definitely not something as explicit as DEA. There are barely any male characters in the game in fact. It's a post-apocalyptic world, there doesn't *seem* to be an institution like patriarchy around. They dropped the ball when it comes to voice quality. I don't know what happened there, but characters voices are just low quality. This was also the issue with all the new voices in DEA Full Voice Edition, and that issue is present here as well. The story structure is also... wild but also strange. So many things happen and you will probably struggle to wrap your head around it and get a coherent full picture of the situation. I think it's one of those stories which you just need to re-read in order to try to get a better understanding, and hopefully appreciation for all the themes which are layered under this journey. I am certainly going to re-read this again when my JP level becomes adequate, or if the localization comes around. Hopefully I'll get more appreciation for this VN, or in the worse case, point out the plot holes. I really love what Metalogiq/Marutani has accomplished beforehand and I am sure there are more things of value in MnO outside of masterful as always art of Metawo. I am also really not sure if they're gonna go for a Fandisc. Not gonna throw spoilers around, but story is made in kind of a way in which it would be difficult to insert the Fandisc episodes. Reika-chan is the best character.

SilentNyle

Recommending Shuusaku by elf! The reasons why are kind of spoilery, but it does a lot of really fun meta stuff with regards to the player character's relation to the world/the game. It's untranslated, but I read a blog post spoiling the story/twists and thought it'd be really fun to talk about. I think a lot about Maggot Baits still. The incredibly bleak narrative in regards to its extreme content and the system of oppression the witches exist in makes the happiness and meaning the characters find in their relationships with each other feel much more beautiful, since they've had to struggle and suffer so much or it.

Dead end aegis is already on the list! I'm also excited for the next game by the publisher, Minagoroshi no Otome, which appears to have similar themes, of women fighting against the patriarchy. This game and the DEA fandisc have already been announced for an english release by Jast!

geasfesa rdgsrdgsd

Oh man, I'm sorry that you had to deal with all that and hope any and all issues that come are minor at worst. For the Q&A segment, while I know it's not a VN, but I would love to hear your thoughts on MahoAko from its horniness to the complexities of the characters. (Legit, I would eat up a whole review video of it from you! β™‘β™‘β™‘) J-Novel finally confirmed a physical release for it in English and with season 2 coming this year, I'm excited to see those girls again

HattieChats

I third DEA! It's the first VN that makes me go "This again? Can't you give her a break?"

Sailor Saturn

Would you ever review any of August vns?

Lilololala

unfortunately you'll be waiting a while if you want a translation. the first english one was unreadable machine translation, and while a new TL is supposedly coming, its not going to be around for quite some time yet. while playing king exit first might be the optimal way to play, it's not needed for getting any of the themes i was talking about.

Maelstrom

Seriously though, I think you could be right.

Kittykatt_Luna

Well, The Simpsons predicted his death. πŸ˜‰

Kittykatt_Luna

Oh yeah, that goes without saying. I just think that Trump himself is pretty old and in a shape that does not look very healthy. Since he is gonna be pretty safe for like 4 years as a president, he will probably just die soon afterwards, if not beforehand.

SilentNyle

You've got me interested. I kind of want to play King's Exit beforehand though.

SilentNyle

Both Drumpf and Muskrat are morally bankrupt. *nods* Not surprised that Muskrat's daughter (and she IS his daughter, he's just a bigoted swine) disowned her sperm donor. Vivian has more morals in her little finger than her sperm donor has in his entire body. πŸ˜‰

Kittykatt_Luna

Stay safe Noelle! I’m glad you’re not in the US, but I’m sorry you’ve been having difficulties in your personal life too. I’m hoping we all get a fucking break and some time to rest soon. With regard to the thoughts in your post, your art has always managed to strike me at the right time and it’s heartening to see that it’s something you consider and think about in your work. Community is something I didn’t really find until this channel encouraged me to dig deeper into visual novels, so thank you so much for that. I don’t have any real recommendations but I’ve been replaying a lot of death game visual novels recently for comfort. Danganronpa, YTTD, and that sort of thing. It feels a little silly to play as a comfort game but…it’s really nice to see a bunch of young people realize they aren’t as helpless as they thought and manage to destroy the violent uncaring system around them and then move forward, irregardless of how scary it is. Wishing you all love πŸ’š

TakeASipBabes

I'm sure it was already going to happen at some point, but demons roots is probably the most antifascist game ive played in recent memory. its got fun themes like fighting against heavily established systems of racism and oppression, the challenges of the average person not able to immediately overcome ingrained biases, and that even when everything seems against your cause, there is still hope and your actions are not in vain. edit: typing this and damn maybe i should replay it now

Maelstrom

What's your favorite dessert?

Lael Hochberg

Trump is getting away with it most likely. It's honestly why I do not believe in Karma as a mystical concept. He is not the first and certainly not the last one to get away with it. You could argue that he is very lucky, but I wouldn't ever want to live his life, so I am not gonna call it "lucky". You don't need to be hyper privileged the entire life to have a rich and fulfilling life experience. His is one of moral and intellectual bankruptcy.

SilentNyle

Please keep safe Noelle. Drumpf the Orange Blimp and the Elongated Muskrat will find Madame Karma nipping at their inflated jello arses soon enough, I hope!

Kittykatt_Luna

This is actually personally comforting for me that people like you are thinking about the complexities of this and looking for ways to show community and solidarity. I'm so grateful you're not in the US anymore, unlike me. I've been really worried and stressed as a nonbinary person about what the future holds. Thank you for everything you are doing <3

Nox

I asked about DEA myself a while back. It would definitely be apt, considering the treatment of women in that story.

Kittykatt_Luna

Very thought provoking thread... In bucket with aforementioned issues, I can also add the new wave of militarization and the attempt to "normalize" and condition people for new wars.. Trump, despite presenting as an "anti-war" candidate, is gonna try to pour in as much as 5% of the GDP (compared to Biden's 2%, which is still bad) while also putting a pressure on countries of EU to militarize themselves. A lot of these arms go towards oppressing the less privileged people across the world, most notably Africa. War is profitable, and the business of war is booming in Africa, unfortunately. If the flames of war from Ukraine expand further into Europe, that could have cataclysmic consequences, this goes without saying. Military culture certainly goes hand in hand with ever more increasingly patriarchal environment, and even more so in fascist ones. This leads me to, yet again, recommend one Visual Novel which I think could fit into this discussion, for the future essays. That would be Dead End Aegis. It's among my current favorite visual novels, combining sci-fi genre with Magical Girls (myself being a fan of both genres, I adore this). It's about a harrowing journey of women facing a seemingly apocalyptic, cosmic dread, originating from another part of the galaxy, while being utterly consumed by the cruel system with utter disregard for their lives, let alone their well being and their dignity. It's very much concerned with systems like capitalism, patriarchy and military industrial complex. About the powers that be, not being concerned with resolving the conflicts, but merely prolonging them as long as possible for profit and power. It's ultimately showing the pointlessness of war and all the destruction, dehumanization, oppression and trauma it causes, and the systems and powers that are the only ones truly gaining from them and work on prolonging them, if not already, instigating them. It's core aspects are the struggles women face in patriarchal environment which commonly dehumanizes them and treat them as less than equal. In worst cases, treating them as little more than sex dolls. But of course, the importance of having the community with people with similar experiences is emphasized. Even if we hit the rock bottom, and lose all hope, we might get uplifted again by our friends. Hope and dreams shall be granted yet again... And despite how dark the future may look, there is always something to hold onto, and visions of a little brighter tomorrow to fight for. The work has resonated with me a lot, it's pretty damn important to me. I think it's still very much underappreciated, and I think it's gonna stay that way, because of nature of it's content. I think DEA, it's themes and it's commentary on society very much fits into this month's discussion. There are many other things in this work which I am letting uninitiated people who are still yet to read it and the creator unfold on their own. It also has Metawo art!

SilentNyle

Thank you for everything that you do. Your voice is a shining beacon amidst these dark times. πŸ’œ

MSuspiriorum

Last year I read "Blood in My Eye" by George Jackson and I felt that was a really impactful text to me on anti-fascism, especially coming from a writer who faced the full brunt of the carceral system, it's something I'd definitely recommend

CosmicCrown

sending you love! 🫢
