Leslie and I finished marathoning the entire Sam and Max Telltale game trilogy this week! The Skunkape remasters, to be specific. I've been a big fan of Sam and Max from the comics to the original Lucasart game (and the Christmas episode of the cartoon), but never played any of the Telltale games beyond its third season, The Devil's Playhouse (which I loved). Leslie and I decided to go through the whole series.

They... sadly, did not hold up well. There's definitely good ideas and jokes, but man, the pacing and sheer amount of dialogue just wears you down after a while. I love Sam and Max as leads and their positively toxic relationship absolutely makes the whole thing worth experiencing, but the cast surrounding them just isn't that strong, the puzzles bring back the worst in classic point and click moon logic, and no matter how well-written and fun the dialogue is, it becomes a chore when you have to go through SO much SO often. You're being peppered by a machine gun of jokes completely ripping you apart, when really, one good joke could've done the job!

The remasters are great, though. Especially visually, honing more into Steve Purcell's comic aesthetic. The new music and lighting is fantastic (though season 3 is WAY too dark visually to the point where it was genuinely hard to see anything). I think I'd still recommend the games. Just... don't play them all back to back. Maybe put a couple weeks between episodes at least. You WILL get burnt out.

That's all for tonight, though! See you on Monday!

Absolutely. And I definitely felt and appreciated the refinement as the seasons went on, and the first two seasons for sure have some great highlights. Maybe if I ever replay them again, I'll force myself to take a couple months break between episodes

I was about to hit the like button, but then I noticed there was exactly 69 likes, and I felt that was too perfect for this page

I played the Telltale Sam & Max series when they were first coming out and I liked them a lot. I'm not sure you experienced them the best way, though. You started with the best season (3), but if you start with 1 then there's the feeling of the games getting better with each season. I also think that maybe the dialogue felt more like a chore specifically because you were marathoning it. It was very different playing them when you had to wait a month or two between episodes.
