Blender-like NURBS modeling

I just saw this and thought it was worth sharing. In the past, I used Moi3D to do this type of solids modeling. There are several advantages to this type of model, in particular if you do any 3D printing you're always assured of having a manifold object. Also, using booleans and fillets is typically much easier and more exact.

The biggest issue with these types of modelers is when you want to export it to a program like blender, the masked version and topology is always not optimal. Still, you can render it nicely inside of Blender.

I hope you enjoy this video.

This reminds me of the days when Rhino 3D first hit the market along with Lightwave, and Zbrush. The only downside to GIT hub is that there are no hashes posted, so when you install it you are taking the risk into your own hands.

Thank you.

Thank you for reply and sharing. Very helpful for me to develop my work flow. :)

Seen a few videos on this recently and it looks amazing! Such a simple, yet refined workflow! Currently in Beta, you can get it here:

So, now I'm mostly retired. I have an odd gig now and then, for instance right now I'm doing work on a new autonomous truck design. But, I typically don't need to deliver engineering drawings anymore, and if I did I would just do them in Moi3D, as I did in the past.

Thank you very much for sharing you process. Previously I use Autodesk Fusion to do product design and most people I work with use Solidworks or Rhino3D. However I prefer your approach to use Blender for so much faster generate design ideas and visualization. I got your non-destructive modeling course but it a bit advance for my current skill level. You can do almost 100% in Blender but how about production documentation and CAD file after your design concepted is approved by client ? Do you use Blender polygon mesh to be guideline for CAD engineer to re-model it ? Actually I don't it waste time at all if we need to re-model in CAD software for production design. The whole project may still done faster if designer have more flexibility to design during conceptual phase. I just want to understand how your work as industrial designer. Thanks for your sharing.

Hi Kevin, I pretty much do 99.9% of everything now in Blender. There are a number of reasons why, but amongst them is the fact that I can do a lot of non-destructive modeling in Blender, which means I can adjust my designs easily. Iteration is a cornerstone of good design and it's very difficult to iterate in NURBS products that are nonparametric (like Moi3d and Plasticity). The Plasticity kernel, which is actually the underlying NURBS engine, looks from this video to be much more flexible than the one that Moi3d uses. For instance, the ability to edit fillets and push and pull surfaces is not available in Moi3d. NURBS modeling is high precision CAD solids modeling and is really good for things like 3D printing and of course proper mechanical/industrial design documentation. It can be tedious at times and difficult to use, but this new product looks fairly simple, very much like Moi3d. I actually do a lot of 3D printing these days. And I invariably use Blender. While it's not a true solids modeler, I can get the results I'm after, especially parametric ones, using my DESIGN MAGIC KIT OPS KPACKS.

Hi Chipp, I follow you from SketchUp to Blender and I see before you fully move to blender you use MOI 3D a lot. Just like SKP > MOI > Blender. I am learning Blender and also try to learn MOI for NURBS modeling to do industrial design work. Most people I know using Rhino. I just wonder, after you mostly do your project in Blender, Do you still need MOI or NURBS tool ? Could you please share your experience a bit about your work flow. If you finish conceptual design in Blender to do detail design in other software. This Plasticity interface look very nice. I also wonder between this tool and MOI which one is good to start with. Thank you very much.
