You wondered how they got to his family before he did. When Quintus arrested Maximus, he ordered the men to ride until dawn and then execute him. They probably didn't take him in the direction of his home, so not only did the men sent after his family get a head start if they left immediately, they also likely started their trip a good bit closer.
