Guadalcanal was first island that the US invaded (August 1942). At first, the US screwed up, in just about every way possible, but the invasion was a learning curve for the US. For months, the battle was a matter of inches, but then the Japanese retreated and the Marines were surprised to find the Japanese were gone. As far as the naval battle fought in the movie, the Battle of Leyte Gulf was actually five separate engagements fought over three days. One of the engagements was the Battle of Surigao Strait. Two Japanese battleships, escorted by a heavy cruiser and seven destroyers tried to take the invasion fleet (the US was invading The Philippines) by surprise. However, there was a flotilla of PT boats in the strait and they took out one battleship and a destroyer. Soldiering on, the Japanese were confronted by six of the battleships that had been sunk or damaged at Pearl Harbor. The remaining Japanese battleship, heavy cruiser and three destroyers were sunk. The very next day, the Yamato, two other battleships, six cruisers and seven destroyers did catch the invasion fleet by surprise. The US invasion fleet was guarded by six small aircraft carriers and six destroyers. It was an epic battle. Yamato sank one of the aircraft carriers, but the Americans disrupted the vastly superior Japanese fleet, causing them to withdraw, but not before they also sank three American destroyers.
