So the thing about these zombies is that they are magic based zombies, not viral. So they only die when their vessel is destroyed (with varying consistency) which is why a head shot didn't work, but putting a giant hole in their chest does. I have mulled over the ending of this film multiple times. My best guess is the prisoner gets more evil with each reincarnation, for whatever reason, most likely due to the soul dealing with all that crazy darkness all the time. which causes the boss to progressively become the lesser of two evils.
