Sixth form college is the equivalent to what they are in the Inbetweeners - some places, people other A levels at the school, other places, there are special colleges just for those two grades

Ricky Gervais talked about this difference in culture and outlook before, and how in America children are told they're the future and can grow up to be president, whereas in Britain you're told that it'll never happen to you.

Klaire, one thing you’ll be learning as you go through different British sitcoms is the tragedy of the British male (the so called “hero” of the series). Usually they are anti-social, awkward people who can’t get the girl (for numerous reasons) or have things conspire against them in general that brings out all of their angst, anger and frustration. For decades now, British audiences have always enjoyed watching “the hero” failing at whatever it is they’re trying to achieve. We love seeing their pomposity burst like a balloon as we watch them squirm and try to wriggle out of bad situations. American sitcoms tend to end an episode of a series on a high note. The guy or girl gets the partner, or they get the dream job they’ve always wanted. Everything seems to end on a happy note. British comedy is different. We find it more true to life to witness the opposite of what happens at the end of an American comedy episode. The class structure in the UK (the aristocracy versus the working class) also plays into our writers thoughts. The idea of someone not “getting above their station” in life is a huge part of what makes our sitcoms work.

Congratulations and thank you on a fantastic reaction, Klaire! I thoroughly enjoyed your take on my favourite comedy series, which I've seen many times, but felt entirely fresh with your reaction to it. I particularly love the way you pause to think before saying something, more often than not. I know you commented on it in the previous episode, but it's something I like a lot, because too few people think enough before speaking. I love watching your brain cogs whirr! It reminds me a bit of my favourite historian, political commentator and expert on Ukraine and Russia, American professor Timothy Snyder, who can stop for an age when asked a question but always has the most fascinating and intelligent responses.

6th Form is the last year of school. I was the youngest in my year, so was 17 throughout that year and only turned 18 after I left, but most students turned 18 at some point during the year. Remember though that the legal age of consent in the UK is 16, although these days you can be prosecuted if you were to have sex with a 16-17 year old when in a position of authority over them, such as a teacher. In my day, that wasn't the case, which offered eternal (entirely unrealistic) hope that we might get off with the gorgeous 20-something art teacher. Our PE teacher ended up having an affair with a 16-year-old student, but they married after she left school.

Yeah late twenties. David Mitchell (who plays Mark) was 29 at the time. Robert Webb (Jeremy) was 31. And yes, I used to smoke a lot of weed, etc. but not so much recently.

Re. their ages and the Inbetweeners comparison, even though the characters are chronologically older they're on about the same maturity level as the boys in the Inbetweeners. Peep Show is basically about emotionally and/or socially stunted adults, it's fleshed out a little in later series but the protagonists (and some peripheral characters) are revealed to both have quite dysfunctional backgrounds and clearly never really matured beyond a certain point. I don't want to spoil it, but there are episodes that are genuinely quite tragic for this reason.
