Old Aunt Jemima was a song written by minstrel performer Billy Kersands in 1875. Uncle Ben is a bit less on the nose, but the historical context is unmistakable; what all three have in common is they hearken back to a time when 'the help' joyfully made delicious food for the families that owned them. The U.S. has proved time and again that they are not above romanticizing the Antebellum South and the practice of slavery in many many ways. So the issue often times turns into it being everyone else's responsibility to litigate and prove without a shadow of a doubt to nostalgic white people whether this imagery is racist or not, which is always an incredible feat in itself. These companies have managed to instill just enough ambiguity over the decades of their existence to allow white people to push back against the wokes because they're getting worked up over imagery inspired by smilin ass black folk making them delicious food.

You couldn't enter it and im not spiritual/im skeptical but it had such an intense uneasy/sad vibe but it was also peaceful and beautiful since it was no longer in use. eerily enough the bldgs in front where they used to house rehab patients were now seemingly apartments that were being rented out, mind you these bldgs are like only 100 ft in front of this foreboding abandoned asylum 😵💫
