Bethany and Ken

Spoilers bruh

Zero_0

Ken said to put the Stille to sleep in order to catch however in order for them to do that requires casting a spell which the Stille can easily detect at that range as they explained, they can easily detect mana at or surpassing Frieren's level. They'd have a way better chance to catch one by feeding it/befriending it as Bethany suggested vs using magic haphazardly without suppressing their mana. And not many mages are niche in this way except for Frieren and in turn Fern because Fern was raised by Frieren and Heiter at a young age. To address Bethany's surprise about Fern being quick, it's her specialty. Fern's talent for quick-casting and being able to react quickly was emphasized during her fight with Lugner. As Lugner stated, he was objectively better at Fern in every single aspect in terms of magic. Technique, mana amount/quality, as well as his control over his magic, overall his quality as a mage surpassed Fern's in the traditional sense. Fern defeated him out of pure speed combined with her excellent mana control and because Frieren taught her how to deceive demons by concealing her mana from a very young age. Frieren herself admitted she has lost 11x in her life to mages with far less mana than her in prev eps. As for an exam taking place in a medieval fantasy-like setting with the "injuries/death" part bothering Ken somewhat; I'm not sure if the Naruto games you guys did covered it as well as the Naruto anime/manga but it parallels with Naruto in which the Chunin exams are even more brutal. Death and injury are acceptable losses especially during times of war there is no moral debate especially when sending children off to war. Survival of the fittest. Prove your usefulness/skill. Granted Frieren's theme isn't like Naruto's, the exam is for merit and prestige, if you die or fail an exam this simple even with unfair odds stacked against you, you shouldn't be taking the exam to begin with and weren't wise enough to back off nor skilled enough. This is basically the Continental Magic Association's line of thought. This is coming from an organization that allowed someone like Ubel to take the First-Class Exam despite killing a First-Class Mage proctor a couple of years prior while taking her Second-Class Mage Exam. No one is forcing them to take the exam. They chose to, so they knew the risks. Human rights can be violated LOL.
