I feel very tranquil and contemplative when I watch this show (I felt that way after e1 too). It is like throwing a pebble into a wide still lake and it sinks, leaving behind large slow ripples that eventually make their way to shore and continue to reverberate. I'm surprised it is holding my attention in terms of plot, since the specifics are rather mundane, but there is also intersection with memory and our lives’ values. Frieren's friends are slowly departing the mortal realm, but it's accepted as part of the cycle of life, people must come to terms with their own passing and that of their loved ones, and memory is one way that people’s reverberations continue even after their passing. Side quests, lol…. But yeah, I’m such a WoW nerd – it’s too too familiar! I feel like Frieren is in a position to learn over the long haul. She might be smart (as a mage), and she has a very long existence to look forward to with continued learning, but there are things she doesn’t yet understand and she is learning those things from her more temporal relationships. The fact she now has Fern to look after also positions her to grow and change; she doesn’t just live for herself now, as she admits, she has Fern to look after. Maybe the glorious quests of her earlier years are done and her companions have aged and passed, but it’s just the first stage of her long life. She has more ahead of her. This makes it interesting to me. I was very involved with organized Christianity for the first half of my life (including leadership roles) but eventually left, partly because of the way the faith was practiced but also because my understanding of life changed. There is definitely a comfort in believing life continues after, it’s just that I’m no longer of whether that is true. At times, this can feel disquieting; other times maybe a finite existence promises some peace afterwards at least. But I do feel strongly about the impact of our lives on others (esp those we love) in this life and how the ripples of our life extend outward and while memory exist, our impact is still felt.

Oooof, definitely hit the nail on the head when it comes to patience and our modern society.

Not weird at all! I think this is the kind of thing that elevates entertainment into art, when it can touch us in some way. Just out of curiosity, have you ever looked into Unitarian Universalism? That's what I [Bethany] was raised as after my parents divorced and I was burned by negative experiences with Catholicism. Just sharing in case it is interesting to you, definitely not at all trying to push a religion on to anyone as I absolutely loathe that. So feel free to continue reading or skip ahead to our next video. 😊 Unitarian Universalism is an off-the-beaten-path religion that might be interesting to those who haven't found a home with the more mainstream religions. A lot of church members at my church were from families of mixed religions who wanted a place to practice the beliefs that resonated with them in an accepting environment. Fun fact, Sunsan B. Anthony, Charles Darwin, and Benjamin Franklin are just a few famous UU's throughout history and there are many more where that came from. Nowadays I don't practice religion regularly but if I did decide to go back to a church every Sunday that's likely the one I'd go to. In the meantime, I identify as spiritual rather than religious, which isn't a surprising evolution after going through Sunday school at a UU church which teaches kids about all major religions, understanding where they often overlap and where they differ, and to respect all those beliefs and practices that are held by individuals as long as they are not hurting or oppressing anyone else.

This is going to probably sound weird, but this show helped me through some dark times in my life. Later episodes dive into religion and beliefs of an afterlife in a way I never thought about. I've always been an atheist, never believed in an afterlife or God, and just thought I would return to nothing when I pass. when I hit 30 years old, the thought of nothing started to terrify me in ways I've never experienced before. Without spoiling future episodes, I'll just say that I found comfort in the thought that it's more convenient to believe in an afterlife and pray that all your loved ones are waiting for you. I still haven't found a religion or faith to believe in, but I decided to open myself up to the possibility. Once again, I know it might be weird that an anime helped me through a mental crisis, but I'm so glad this show came out when it did.

I’m not gonna lie…I’m feeling the same way that you guys are about the show. Like last episode I was a little put off and wasn’t too sure about the series, but watching this episode genuinely made me get hooked to the series like it felt…so peaceful to watch. And I’m really beginning to enjoy Freiren’s character, who is someone who embodies being in the moment and is very patient, and sadly this is slowly becoming a lost art in this current, modern world we live in right now

And fun story, the director of this anime read the first chapter of the manga and decided he WOULD make this anime. Which is not normally how a production comes together. This show was a 100% passion project and it shows

Avalon

Evan Call was the perfect composer for this series. I’m staunchly sure that the slow burn of this series wouldn’t feel as magical without his ever-present score behind it. And that’s exactly what he did for Violet Evergarden before. He’s great with reverent sweeping motions, and I can’t get enough of it

Statues don't become green because of rust. The green (or sometimes blue) covering that forms on copper and bronze that happens due to essentially the same chemical process that causes rust (oxidation), but instead of rusting, they form a pantina. Which is a protective layer that actually slows down rusting.

I think the thing that makes frieren so beloved is that its so unique in its slow pace. Most anime are just bang explosions straight off the bat, but frieren takes time to build up the world, like you would expect in say western hollywood shows.

Knight Spearhead

"Not a spec of rust in sight" but its still green, My immersion :p

Knight Spearhead

Dang beat me to commenting this Lol

You guys aren't the first reactors I've seen who thought that Heiter was up to something shady. But nope, turns out he was just an old man who didn't want either Fern or his old friend to be lonely after he died. You guys may or may not have heard, but there was an event not long ago (I think in Taiwan) where a guy with a knife went on a rampage on a train. Some bystander rushed him and risked his life to hold the knifeman down before he could kill anyone. When interviewed by the press on why he risked his life, the man (who's been dubbed 'long haired bro' by the internet) said: "It's what Himmel the Hero would have done." Himmel is a meme, now.

Jennifer Sunderland

its kinda a slice of life with some action elements. the reason its so good it because its suppose to make you feel things. At least thats how i feel about it

SirenWindy

The irony of a slow burn in a time skip lol

Pyrodragon3993

A slow burn is a good description. Its a very reverent story.
