I remembered seeing this episode (one of the very few I watched) 15 years ago when it aired on Adult Swim and boy did it leave me speechless for the rest of that night. It's like you said Ken, this kind of evil does exist in the world, but seeing it before your very eyes, even in a cartoon, is still jarring and traumatic to see. If anything, the one lesson this episode teaches is the dark side of being an alchemist, and you can clearly see Ed in a moral dilemma trying to separate himself from Tucker, even though he somewhat attempted something similar in his past. This is so true to nature, because sometimes no matter the good we do in the world, the way we go about it sometimes is no different than some of the evilest intentions out there, no matter how much we mean well. P.S. Please disregard some of the comments here, it's crazy how immature some people here can be

But yeah, this episode sets the premise, that nothing in this show is granted. There is no, "that character is important, they can't die" or "they wouldn't kill off that character, it's just a child". When there is conflict, characters may perish. Of course there will be an ending, and no matter if it will be good or bad, we can never let our guard down, because we don't know what the price of that ending will be.

It’s constantly brought up in discussions and memes between anime fans the world over. What I adore about this scene is that while it seems to have all the trappings of an episodic “conflict of the week,” it’s never forgotten is never forgotten by the characters. Ed and Al carry that memory with them for the rest of the story, referencing what Shou Tucker did even deep into the series climax. It also sets the stage for one of the major themes of the story as a whole, that being the sins of the father…
