What we've learned from Aira is that the whole "you're gonna love this character" thing is part spoiler and part just unneeded commentary. You're supposed to not like them, because their first appearances are either intentionally negative (Aira) or just uncomfortably weird (Jiji). It's actually supposed to make you distance yourself from them at the start, that's how the story was written.
