We take copyright law very seriously, so you will have to sync up our reaction to your own version of the show/movie. To help, we have a range of guiding tools throughout the reaction to help you sync up with us, including a small snippet of the scene to ensure you are in sync.  Any instances in which you see the screen cut, this means we’ve had technical difficulties or have skipped a potential disruptions/bloopers. This means you will need to sync up your copy of the show again, if we are unable to edit these cuts seamlessly into the next scene. An updated timecode will be provided on the screen.  Anytime we pause, there will be timer/countdown on screen to prompt you. So if we’re about to pause, there’ll be a countdown, and you are expected to pause as the number reaches 0. The same will happen when we press play after pausing. I personally love this episode because it provides a ton of context for both Lumon and Cobel which I think is both interesting and necessary, but I also totally understand why so many viewers were impatient with it, especially after the previous episode made us feel like we were finally getting some answers.

Yea people can't really take one different episode. Same with fly episode with Breaking Bad. It's not even bad, it gives you lots of insight for this Kier shit. I can't understand how people's thought process is "this episode is so confusing, nothing makes sense, so boring." instead of "oh this is interesting..."

Ritsu

A lot of no attention span people commenting on this episode.

yeah i loved the history of cobel but this one was hard for me to get through. It did feel like there were long drawn out scenes and dialogue, and I felt like we could have gotten more answers, details, etc. It's definitely weird and disorienting, maybe to set the mood for Cobel's weird childhood. . It seemed like those two were child workers part of the fellowship, and most of those people's lives were ruined by the Ether drug and by Lumon and they felt that Cobel was a traitor for staying with Lumon

Ben Stiller must of been high when directing this

This episode was shit lol

DRIP DROP

Definitely agree the episode could have been part of another with parts of this one shortened. Lumon was involved in different businesses producing different products. The ether factory was built and run by Lumon. Ether used to be used as anesthesia before more modern drugs were discovered to sedate patients. Ether is addictive and is only in the form of gas. It needs to be inhaled through a mask or tube. It has horrible side effects when used as anesthesia. It makes people violently ill. It is also highly flammable another reason to not use it for surgery. The townspeople who worked in the factory have lung problems from inhaling it. It is addictive. The lady with the oxygen tank in the coffee shop was mostly likely abusing it. Lumon came in, used child labor, made money and most likely abandoned ship when the demand for Ether went down. They left addicted people that probably started getting high as kids without a job. Praise Kier - the fraudulent creator of the entire sick thing. Cobel was a product of it as well.

This show has always been a slow burn, but this was the first episode where it failed to be engaging. Still, it was much needed on a character level. It added so much clarity to Cobel, who to me was probably the most mysterious character of season 1. So much of her behavior and motivations make sense now. Her personal investment in severance, in Mark S/Gemma and why she refused to do anything but run that floor. Added so much context to her conversation with Helena too. Not a spoiler, just my opinion, but I think the scene of her mourning her mother is meant to drive home why Cobel might have invented severence to begin with. To escape that pain. Lumon exploited the town, its children and left them with nothing but addiction. This show obviously has a lot of commentary on the corporate world, but that one is one of the most disturbing. As to why Hampton helped Cobel so much, well, the fact that she's there at all tells him she's in serious shit. Why does he care? Because they share a traumatic past and he seemingly still has feelings for her. The way he kept looking at her...woof.

This episode also explains Miss Huangs role as well, she is in the same fellowship that Ms. Cobel was in when she was younger.

Sissy is Harmony's aunt, Charlotte's sister.

Two notes- Celestine “Sissy” Cobel is Harmonys sister. Charlotte Cobel is Harmonys mother. The breathing tube had a date of 1945 or something that indicated it had to be someone older than Harmony. Cobel was in the “wintertide felllowship” . Basically went from child labor to a prestigious fast track in her teens or maybe earlier.

Yeah that was not my favorite episode! I remember being so pissed when it aired, after e7 was so amazing this felt like a huge letdown. And it also was shorty and should have been we did get valuable intel about the origins of the severance chip, and Cobel’s history etc, but not much else.

It's totally Severance to go from the best episode to the worst episode lol The payoff was great though thankfully. And now we know what Miss Huang is all about - Lumon has no problem with child labor as we found out Cobel worked for Lumon in one of their factories as a child.
