All the Big Feelings you have about Amon and he wasn't entirely accurately played. He was way worse. He was so cartoonishly evil that portraying him would have either been unbelievable or torture porn. Apparently Ralph Fiennes portrayed him accurately enough that a Holocaust survivor on set had a panic attack and he broke character to calm her down. And he had a daughter who wound up having a daughter with an African, so his granddaughter is black. She wrote a book called "My Grandfather would have Shot Me."

That’s a bit of a misleading statement… This movie is based on a novel of *historical fiction*, emphasis on the ‘historical’ part. One of the survivors convinced an author (a novelist) to write it so the story could be told to the world. So, it’s dramatized, but also quite accurate and based on facts, both historically researched and told firsthand by the survivors. It is a true story.

This movie was based off of a fictional novel despite it being a fantastic film with a strong message.

I have a dear friend who is German (I call him my Grandfather) he was born during the war. His father wasn’t a Nazi but when Hitler moved to Berchtesgaden (his summer home), he sent many/most sen to the Eastern Front. Peter’s family owned two hotel and she whisked Peter and his older brother to the remote hotel. Peter’s father spent several years in a Soviet war camp and returned a different man. He shot a particular bird (to control the population). The idea of shooting this bird gave him a heart attack and he died the next day. I give thanks for the late Claudia Miller (Peter’s Mom for raising such a kind, fun man who I have the joy of seeing in October. That said, I have been to 3 concentration camps and will visit no more. Seeing them in person is indescribable.

I read a quote somewhere from a survivor that said it was even worse than what was shown in the movie. Just horrible & shocking to think humans are capable of such brutality & inhumane acts both individually & on a large scale.

Great reaction! When I was in school, all the schools in my town got together and rented a movie theater once a year and showed this movie to the eighth graders. I remember I thought it would be a slog since it was so long, and in black and white, but it didn't take long before I was wholeheartedly invested, and more or less forgot that it wasn't in colour. I think making it in black and white was 100 % the right way to go. It doesn't make the violence less horrendous, but it makes it not gratuitous. Same thing with the nudity, it feels like exploitation but in the "right" way (ie. it doesn't feel like exploitation for the viewing audience, but it highlights how the Jews were treated as if their personal integrity didn't matter at all). When it comes to the Oscars, one of the biggest WTF moments is how Ralph Fiennes could lose best supporting actor to Tommy Lee Jones in "the Fugitive". Not that Jones doesn't give a great performance, but it's like comparing a nice home-cooked meal to dinner at a three star micheline restaurant. I very much recommend a youtube video for you guys to watch on your own time, regarding Fiennes' performance and the fine nuances of it. The channel is called Just an Observation, and has a lot of great videos. You can find the one about Fiennes here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EcPiYhSrjUU&list=LL&index=9

I think I know which book you mean! I'm Swedish, so I can't be 100 % sure, but I read a book with that title (in Swedish) when I was studying history at university. About a group of ordinary men who were ordered to commit horrible war crimes against Jews, and at first they could barely go through with it, but it didn't take long before they were joking about it at the breakfast table. If it is the same book I read then I wholeheartedly agree.

“I swore never to be silent whenever and wherever human beings endure suffering and humiliation. We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented.” Nobel Prize Acceptance Speech, December 10, 1986 "Never shall I forget that night, the first night in camp, which has turned my life into one long night, seven times cursed and seven times sealed. Never shall I forget that smoke. Never shall I forget the little faces of the children, whose bodies I saw turned into wreaths of smoke beneath a silent blue sky. Never shall I forget those flames which consumed my faith forever. Never shall I forget that nocturnal silence which deprived me, for all eternity, of the desire to live. Never shall I forget those moments which murdered my God and my soul and turned my dreams to dust. Never shall I forget these things, even if I am condemned to live as long as God Himself. Never. Night, p. 32 "Around us, everyone was weeping. Someone began to recite the Kaddish, the prayer for the dead. I do not know if it has ever happened before, in the long history of the Jews, that people have ever recited the prayer for the dead for themselves." -Elie Wiesel (Holocaust Survivor; Nobel Laureate)

Visitation stones are how jews pay respect and remembrance to their deceased its a very old tradition from when they wandered the desert in tribes it protects the graves from the elements and scavengers putting the stones on Schindlers grave they honored him as one of their own very hard movie to watch but so good very much like band of brothers.

The stories of individual atrocities shown throughout were generally inspired by survivors real stories. As awful as the events in this film are, it could have been so much worse. I don't think I could even watch a film on Goebles, for example, the Nazi 'doctor' infamous for his HORRENDOUS 'experiments' (medical and otherwise) on Jewish prisoners. I made the mistake of reading part of a book about the experiments -- they did things ...you just can't even imagine. Even Ramsey Bolton would have been shocked. The crazy thing is, the scientific world has kept a lot of that data because such things would normally never be tested on humans. They subjected people to every manner of awfulness...things I cannot bring myself to think of, let alone repeat... and recorded the results in meticulous detail. This also lead to certain Nazi scientists being secretly saved, given new identities, and moved to other countries to aid in various types of research since they had experience nobody would ever have again.

Re: the soldiers shooting multiple people in a row with one bullet; while there were plenty of atrocities done for sick amusement and many more for horrendous 'experiments', as the war wore on, Germany was exhausting it's resources. Even bullets were getting harder to come by. The disgusting truth about exterminating 6 million people is, eventually the Nazis were seeking the most efficient, cheapest ways to kill people. Nazi soldiers were encouraged and even rewarded for coming up with ways to kill groups of people efficiently with as little expenditure of resources and manpower as possible.

Sad and harrowing movie, but watching in this day and age my sentiments have changed about the movie ngl.

This is a movie I think everyone should watch once, but I agree, that one time is enough. As someone who is dedicating their career to history I love how cinema can really play an important role in visualizing the things so significant in our past. As my WW2 professor would say at the end of lecture, "sorry for ruining the rest of your day".

Sully

Ben Kingsley (here Izhak Stern, Schindler’s assistent) also played the chief warden in Shutter Island. And «the Mandarin» in the Marvel movies And you are correct, Amon was the same actor as for Voldemort

I think the book "Ordinary Men" should be mandatory reading for High School Juniors/Seniors.

For about 10 years ago I thought most movies were art but then we past 2015 and here we are lol I agree though this is a very important movie and everyone should watch it at least once. This was the movie when I realized what an incredible actor Liam Neeson is. Also it was a given that it will ruin poor Pudgey. :)

That scene where the gun kept jamming as they were trying to execute a worker is true! He survived the Holocaust and spoke about this incident in great detail. I believe as they hanged Göth, a similar thing happened. The rope broke several times and they had to keep putting him back up. His behavior was reportedly toned down for the movie. The real Amon Göth was so horrible that the producers didn't think the audience would believe it.

Steffen Eide

The ending was just the actual people together with the actors that played them. The person who put down the flower at the end was Liam Neeson. In cases where the person had died, they had the spouse together with the actor (like Mrs. Stern)

Hope y'all enjoyed it. I just can't watch it again lmao once is enough for me

There are movies that are art, in a conceptual way. Others, they are entertainment. But this one, this one is history. As heavy, sad and hard to watch, it is important for us to face what was done in history, because there are still people to this very day that, if they could, they would start this whole shit show all over again. I live in Germany since a long time, you still feel the heaviness in the air at some places, but in order to build a better future, we really need to learn from the past. I was really wanting for you guys to watch this movie, not because of the reaction, but because this is something that everyone really should watch. Again, I really love how empathetic you are, so I imagine how hard it was to go through this. But it is also important, specially for you guys having a big audience, to give from time to time also space for content like this. A lot of young people will come across this movie through your channel too ;)
