2024-07-10 22:49:29 +0000 UTCIVE BEEN SO EXCITED FOR THIS!! Peaky Blinders is one of my favorite shows of all time. Incredible script/dialogue- some of the best lines in television. Incredible acting performances all around- especially from Cillian. And incredible cinematography- the shots and camera work are pure art. A couple things: Although fictional, this show plays around a lot with real historical events/people/groups. It’ll definitely improve your experience as you go along if you read up on the historical backgrounds, as the show does not often go into explanation. For instance, the IRA (Irish Republican Army) were a resistance group that formed to free Ireland from British rule and used violent means to try to achieve it. They play a large role moving forward in the show. Also characters like Winston Churchill who later became Prime Minister during World War II. The Peaky Blinders themselves are based on a real gang that existed in Birmingham during this time. Also, the silver bits in their caps aren’t cufflinks. They’re razor blades. Can’t wait to watch this incredible show again (for the millionth time lol) along with my favorite reactors!

I know the Inspector (played by Sam Neill) from Jurassic Park many years ago. I really like the vibe of this show. The music is great too.

Thats how these shows should be enjoyed imo, and the fun of fiction stories in general. I cry over photos of my cat irl but for the 50 mins I'm watching this I am a Peaky Blinder and the Shelbys are my blood 😂 Anyway, great first reaction.

When he started imagining the show, creator Steven Knight was inspired by his father's memories of a powerful, well-dressed gang in the Birmingham of his youth. I was curious to see if this was based off of a true story, so I did some research and found this to be some cool background info.

They were mostly protestants who wanted Ireland to remain part of the United Kingdom whereas the Catholics wanted a separate, united Ireland. The war known as "the troubles" went on most of the 20th century. I don't have all the details, but it was pretty violent. I had friend who was in Northern Ireland helping the orphans whose parents died in the fighting. She was there for 8 years and came home with some severe PTSD. Anyway, history aside, I really like the feel of this show. Thomas has a swagger about him and the music seems to follow. The inspector from Belfast is there to investigate. I love what Thomas did with Danny as they both had been through their own hell in the war in France. My great grandfather fought in WWI and he was shot while in France (did not die) but he got a Purple Heart which is a US award for those wounded in battle. He named my grandmother (his daughter) after the nurse in France who helped him recover. I always love that story - Madeline was her name. I never met him as he died in the early 1960s but my grandmother told me all about her dad and where her name came from.

They carried out a number of bombings, some of which killed children. This is another great show to learn some history about.
