To answer the question mentioned in the end - the 400 that sent the messenger wouldn’t know for a while that he didn’t reach the main army, because of how much time the travel takes, I also assume that Askeladd plans to make a move before enough time passes for the 400 to even realize that something happened to the messenger. And since he just disappeared - they can always blame the English, it’s enemy territory after all, even if occupied.
