Sexy Steampunk Babes: Chapter Fifty Eight
Added 2025-01-03 12:33:13 +0000 UTCYelena had not been sleeping when the first alarm bells had been rung. For while she trusted her oldest child implicitly, rare was the mother that could sleep well knowing her child was headed into battle. It didn’t help that the Queen shared her daughter’s misgivings regarding the peculiarity of the opposing fleet’s presence, but she also held no greater insight as to what surprises their mystery foe might have in store.
Well, now we have our answer, she thought bitterly as she watched through a viewing orb as another skydock fell onto her city. She felt it fall, the vibrations from the collapse of the massive structure reaching her even in the palace’s basement command center.
In the background, she watched as what defenders remained airborne traded shots with the attacking fleet, but with the defenders having been reduced to just four vessels in less than an hour and now facing nearly twice their number, the defense was haphazard at best.
Still, the command center was a hive of activity as her people tried to organize reinforcements from vassals further afield from the capital or direct those that remained in the fight.
All while her city burned.
Yelena’s armored gauntlets creaked as she gripped the wood of her command table at that thought.
Someone would pay for this. Pay dearly.
Even if she didn’t survive the night, the Royal Fleet had been informed of the attack and was returning home with all the haste it could muster. And while it might not arrive in time to thwart whatever goal their enemy hoped to achieve here, it would be well positioned and motivated to take revenge on whoever organized it.
And while Yelena was tempted to say that it was the Blackstones, this kind of subterfuge simply wasn’t their style. The audacity of it perhaps - and even the method, if this was a city full of orcs – but Eleanor Blackstone would gain little from an attack like this beyond uniting the rest of the country against her.
Plus, the tactics aren’t right for a Northern fleet, Yelena thought, her lips set into a grim line as she considered the reports coming in.
“Marmaduke reports that it’s lost contact with the core-room,” an Orb-Operator reported in rapid fire cadence. “Last report was two minutes ago. Core-Defender reported no less than three attackers. Captain is now reporting Marmaduke is losing pressure in all aether-bulkheads. Propellors non-functional. Core presumed missing. Captain reports that she’s likely to go down over the docks. Captain is ordering an all-hands evacuation to parachute and glider muster stations. She… she intends to go down with the ship.”
Yelena wasn’t too surprised to hear that. Better to go down with the ship than return home as the woman on whom’s watch the family’s core was lost.
Unfortunately for the captain of the Marmaduke, Yelena didn’t have time for that.
“Tell the silly bint to get out of there,” Yelena ordered in a clipped manner. “Our capital’s under attack and I need every mage I can get my hands on – even if she has to fight on foot from on top of the burning corpse of her family’s ship.”
Nodding her head, the comm’s specialist hurriedly moved to convey her sovereign’s wishes. Satisfied her orders were being obeyed, Yelena once more turned her attention to her viewing-orb in time to see a series of glow-bolts stitching their way across the night sky. Then once again as dozens of shards clashed overhead. Once upon a time they’d barely been visible in the night, but with the flames of the city below and moon out in full force above, it wasn’t hard to see the small dots as they darted across the skies above the capital.
It wasn’t hard to see who was winning.
And it wasn’t the women of Lindholm.
Whoever the attackers were, for they were no mere pirates, were good. Damn good. Initial estimates were that the ‘underships’ had launched about twenty or so shards in the opening moments of their attack.
Those twenty shards had wasted no time in decimating any shards hastily launched from the surprised vassal fleet, and had since moved on to using their altitude advantage to massacre any of the shards sent up by the capital’s airfields.
Sure, technically even with the royal fleet gone and the vassal fleet unprepared to launch their own shard complement, the three airbases dotted around the capital theoretically had enough shards to outnumber the twenty or so enemy flyers nearly twice over – but that advantage was useless when the enemy pilots were shooting down her people the moment they left the airfields.
There was a reason why the first order given upon seeing an approaching enemy get within an hour’s travel time of the city was for those airfield based shards to climb to max altitude and remain on standby.
Except, they’d never gotten that chance - because the enemy literally appeared right on top of them.
Rising from the sea, she thought. How absurd.
Perhaps if she placed any stock into the myths of Al’Hundra’s divinity she’d have thought this the recently deceased god-kraken’s revenge.
“Ignoring our issues with the first, do we have any indications of a second wave incoming?” she asked.
Was this the vanguard of an entire undership invasion fleet? As absurd as it would be for any of her enemies produce that many vessels of this type without her knowledge.
Then again, they built this many without you knowing, her mind niggled away at her. And you still don’t even know who they are.
Nearby, one of her commanders shook her head. “If there were, I’m afraid we wouldn’t know until they breached the surface your majesty. With the loss of our lighthouses, we’re effectively blind as to any happenings in the water.”
Another woman, the markings of the city guard on her uniform spoke up. “In addition to those troops fighting fires in the city itself, we’ve dispatched garrisons to retake the lighthouses, but initial reports show the defenders there are dug in tight. Our own fortifications are working against us there.”
Yelena wanted to scream and ask why then if her lighthouses were so fortified had they fallen so easily? She didn’t though because she already knew the answer.
They’d been as taken by surprise as the rest of the capital.
So instead of screaming like she wanted, she kept her tone as calm as possible. “Have our people on the ground had any luck identifying the origins of our attackers?”
In other words, are they dark elves or light elves?
The woman shook her head. “We’ve yet to claim a body in any shape to be identified.”
Of course not, Yelena thought grimly.
They might have identified the ships, but they were a mix of different vessels with clearly different origins. A majority were Lunites, but there were also two Solite Lineships and Two Lindholmian Galleons.
Someone had invested a lot into this attack – and, as much as it pained her, it was paying off.
A burning wreck floated past the tower holding the viewing orb connected to the one she was watching, a somber testament to the ferocity of the battle. The Honorable had been struck amidships by three nearly flawless incendiary javelins launched by enemy shards in the opening moments of the battle. At least one of these projectiles had pierced the steel hull, setting the wooden framework beneath ablaze. The crew had been left with no choice but to abandon the ship as the fire raged uncontrollably.
Now, nearly an hour on, the flaming shell still drifted aimlessly, destined to drop from the skies when either the aether-ballasts ruptured or the the absence of a mage onboard rendered the core inert.
Either way, she could only pray it wouldn’t happen over the city. The one silver lining was that the raging fire would deny the enemy any chance to salvage the core before the royal navy arrived. After the battle, House Hawkthorne could reclaim it safely.
“Academy is requesting permission to join the fight again,” another orb-operator announced.
“No!” Yelena snapped. “I won’t have students thrown into this slaughter for negligible gain. Do you think they’ll fare any better than our own pilots?”
She refused to sacrifice Lindholm’s future for a fleeting advantage in the present.
But, as if the fates were mocking her resolve, the situation shifted abruptly.
“The enemy is circling back around,” came the urgent warning.
Everyone watched in grim silence as the enemy fleet, seemingly satisfied with the destruction of the vassal forces, began to regroup into two distinct formations—one larger, one smaller.
“Heading?” Yelena demanded.
“Us and the Academy,” came the reply.
“Of course,” she muttered under her breath.
She’d suspected as much. Despite the palace and academy being prime targets, the enemy had done little more than take a few cursory shots at the hangars of each in the opening moments of the fight. Now, admittedly, both sites posed minimal immediate threat compared to the sky-docks and their ships, but as the battle had drawn on the lack of bombardment of either site only became more and more curious.
Now though, the strategy was clear—they intended to storm both locations.
And while conventional wisdom dictated that softening a structure first with a few cannonballs might make it easier to breach, the reality was that navigating rubble-strewn corridors and collapsed rooms would only complicate such efforts.
Especially if one was both searching for something and wanted it intact.
They’re after the Kraken Slayer, she thought. If any records of its creation existed, an outside force would assume that they’d be housed at the palace or the academy.
True, the enemy might also have been interested in her or the political hostages housed at the academy, but such motivations didn’t align with the scale of the assault. Lindholm wouldn’t capitulate because a handful of noble heirs or even the queen were taken.
No, it would instead galvanize them, uniting the nation against the aggressors.
To that end, the enemy would be after something far more significant—something worth this level of risk and investment.
Like a way to mass-produce enchanted shells for a nation whose stockpile had long since run dry, she thought. Like a way to salvage cores off their own coastlines.
…Still, their attack presented a rare opportunity. If the enemy was so desperate to claim the Kraken Slayer, she’d make sure they got it - on her terms and in her time.
“To the labs,” Yelena ordered, her voice cutting through the tension like a blade. Her personal guard, both visible and shrouded in cloaking magic, immediately fell into formation around her.
The command center’s personnel saluted sharply, their movements precise, a display of discipline amidst the chaos. Yelena paused at the threshold, her sharp gaze flicking to the admiral.
“Any reinforcements likely to arrive in the next few hours?” she asked, her tone steely.
The admiral’s lips pressed into a thin line, her weathered face showing the strain of the battle. “A vassal ship managed to avoid the initial strike by being late to the sortie,” she replied. “A cruiser. It’s a carrier-hybrid though.”
“Still sortieing?” Yelena’s brow furrowed, her voice dipping into suspicion. “It’s been hours since my daughter gave the order for the royal vassals to assemble. Even our farthest vassals would have reached us by now.”
A cold, gnawing thought twisted through her gut, like a knife being driven deeper with every passing second. Was this latecomer party to… whatever was happening here in the capital?
“The ship in question was undergoing refits and wasn’t combat-ready,” the admiral explained, her tone flat. “The young lord captaining it claims she’s operational now, but…” She trailed off, her skepticism evident. The notion of a hastily refitted airship under an inexperienced commander inspired little confidence.
Yelena, however, allowed a sly smile to creep across her face. “Would that ship happen to be the Jellyfish? From House Redwater?”
The admiral’s brow furrowed in surprise. “Yes. How did you-”
“The name, house and ship are each known to me,” Yelena replied, her voice calm, though her sharp eyes betrayed a deeper calculation.
The admiral gave a brisk nod. “The Jellyfish is en route. It should arrive within the hour.”
“Good,” Yelena said, her tone shifting to one of quiet authority. “A portion of my guard will remain here to protect the bunker. Maintain command of the defense until… well, until there’s nothing left to command or no one left to be commanded.”
To her credit, the woman didn’t flinch as she nodded, giving off a final salute, before she returned to the tactical display board.
Yelena turned, her stride purposeful as she resumed her march toward the labs, mage-lamps casting long shadows over polished stone walls. For the first time in hours, a flicker of hope pierced through the haze of doubt clouding her mind.
Here’s hoping whatever William was working on with his coven of alchemists will prove as surprising to the enemy as it surely will to me, she mused.
It was a slim hope, though. Genius, even of the harrowed kind, rarely turned the tide of war alone. What could one experimental ship possibly achieve against an entire fleet?
Still, speculation was a luxury she couldn’t afford to linger on for long. She had her own battles to prepare for.
“My bolt-bow,” Yelena ordered, her voice steady.
The weight of her family’s ancestral weapon - modernized over generations - settled into her hand. Its intricate brasswork gleamed faintly, and its reinforced frame whirred softly as she adjusted her grip. She strode forward, flanked by a platoon of the continent’s most formidable warriors, their armor glinting like obsidian in the dim light.
If tonight was her night to fall, well, she’d go down spitting death and defiance.
---------------
Mary felt the ship roll beneath her feet as she stared at the endless rows of shards before her and the other cadets, the sleek, polished aluminum craft shimmering faintly under the hangar lights. Shards that, by all rights, should have been little more than empty frames, bereft of cores.
Yet here they were, loaded into the Jellyfish’s side-launch modules, being loaded and tended by… alchemists. In minutes, the lord claimed those shards would be poised and ready to fly.
Despite the lack of a core.
Clearly he believed it, because with a single command, each of the shards in those bays would be flung be flung out into the night sky.
Of course, any returning shard would need to execute a running landing using the Jellyfish’s new peculiar looking ‘flat top’- a maneuver Mary had practiced countless times but still feared. Anya was still laid up in the infirmary. Word was that a more skilled healer was on their way, but Mary couldn’t help but worry that it was simply a kind lie.
Still, whether a healer came or not, Mary couldn’t forget the deafening crash of Anya’s shard slamming into the airship’s side. The memory lingered, as sharp and unforgiving as the wings of the shards themselves.
…Mary couldn’t shake the image of Anya’s mangled foot when she’d been pulled from the wreckage. The jagged, unnatural shape haunted her. And now, here they were, heading into real battle. Not a drill, not a simulation - real combat. In comparison, landing the shard safely felt like the least of her worries.
She’d once been proud to call herself a pilot. Still was, deep down. But somehow, the gravity of what that meant hadn’t fully sunk in. Even now, as the tension thickened around her, it felt like a half-formed dream, something distant and surreal.
“What are you waiting for, cadets? A written invitation?” Instructor Greygrass barked, her gravelly voice cutting through the noise of the hangar. The scar on her chin caught the light as she fixed the crowd of plebian cadets with a withering glare. “You’ve been given your instructors. Your shards are assigned. Do not make me look incompetent in front of your lord!”
Mary’s gaze flicked toward the main platform, where Lord Redwater stood, his impromptu speech over. His team stood behind him, looking just as uncertain as the cadets ahead. Beside him, Lady Tern stood, her sharp eyes scanning the scene. Unlike the others, she didn’t seem confused - just deeply unhappy as she spoke in rapid-fire bursts to the distracted lord.
The scene wasn’t unusual. Most instructors carried a perpetual air of dissatisfaction, and while the royal navy’s trainers were a touch more optimistic than the dour dark elves, that wasn’t saying much.
“Move, cadet, or I’ll launch you from the shard bay without a shard!” Greygrass roared, her tone sharp as iron.
Case in point, Mary though as she glanced around and realized that the rest of the… squadron had already dispersed, making their way over to their assigned bays and shards.
Mary followed suit, as she jogged over to clamber up into her assigned shard, the familiar motion oddly jarring. The cockpit smelled faintly of oil and ozone, and she was a little surprised by how much this ‘new designed’ resembled the Corsair-M they’d been practicing with.
Though she didn’t know why that would surprise her.
Shaking her head to clear those unneeded thoughts, she began her pre-flight checks, her hands steady despite the knot in her stomach. When it came time to request core activation though, she hesitated.
She’d partially turned back, to request it from the instructor there… but there was no one behind her. No second seat. Merely cockpit glass.
Then she remembered. The lord had said this new design didn’t need a mage to activate it. That it wasn’t limited to eight minutes of flight time… but thirty.
Some part of her still didn’t quite believe it. How could a shard even function without a mage? Cores needed mages to produce aether - everyone knew that. But here it was, this sleek, enigmatic shard, defying everything she understood.
Mostly because she wasn’t being given the opportunity. She wanted to laugh at the absurdity of it. They were being thrown into battle in shards they barely understood that defied comprehension.
Deeps, she didn’t even know how to turn this thing—
“Flip the switch there,” a calm voice interrupted her spiraling thoughts. “Turn it for a second, then let go.”
Mary nearly jumped out of her seat. The lord was right next to her - right there - his face far too close for comfort for a girl who’d never even spoken to a boy.
She wasn’t used to boys, especially not noble ones. Too tall. Too plain. Destined for a lady-marriage with her gangly frame, marred by a scattering of acne. At least, according to her mothers.
…What was worse, was that they weren’t even being deliberately unkind. Merely realistic.
She’d secretly hoped that becoming a pilot might change her luck in that department - maybe even help her find someone decent once she got away from a village that was now full of them. A trip to the city had been on her mind for a while now; she’d been saving her coin for it.
But that was a distant dream.
And now there was a boy here - a noble boy - standing right next to her.
Fae above, she could feel his breath on her cheek.
“Cadet?”
Right, the switch! She snapped back to the task at hand, frantically searching for the spot he’d indicated. Her fingers finally found the small, unassuming lever. She flicked it on, and a deafening roar erupted beneath her, making her jump as though the machine had bitten her. She let go instinctively, her heart hammering in time with the growl of the… thing below.
Did I break it? she thought.
The old Corsair-M always started with a soft hum, like the comforting purr of her family’s tabby cat. This sound, though- it was jarring, more like the deep, guttural groaning old Davy made after the Bevin’s horse had kicked him in the ribs.
She still had nightmares about that horrible wheezing.
She turned to the lord, panic in her eyes, but he remained unfazed.
“Good,” he said, his tone steady, as if nothing had happened. “Now, I know I mentioned this before, but it bears repeating. The design was made to mimic the Corsair-M you’re used to- same flight profile, same control layout, same weight distribution. But there are differences.”
Mary nodded, trying to focus on his words and not his lips as he continued.
“For one thing, this engine’s a lot more powerful. Be ready for some kick. And by kick, I mean it might try to flip you.”
Flip her? Her stomach churned as her mind flashed to that one time-
“Yeah, you get it,” he said, as if reading her thoughts. “We added that ‘defective thruster valve’ on the underside of the M for that reason. To imitate this. You’ll feel it on the right wing; it works like that valve, so keep your balance.”
So that’s why-
“Got it?”
A little annoyed at her thoughts being constantly interrupted, instinct nontheless took over, as Mary snapped to attention.
“Yes, ma’am.”
The words slipped out before Mary could stop herself, and the realization hit her like a bolt of lightning. She’d just called the lord—a boy, a man—ma’am. Her cheeks burned, and for a moment, she wished the shard would swallow her whole.
But instead of taking offense, the young lord laughed. A light, easy chuckle, as if her blunder had made his day. Without another word, he hopped off the ladder and strode to the next shard, where another cadet sat, looking just as bewildered as Mary had moments ago.
The roar of her ‘core’ was no longer alone though. Across the launch bays, dozens of craft had come to life, their cores growling in unison. Mary glanced around, noticing instructors and alchemists perched on ladders beside her fellow cadets, offering the same hurried guidance she’d just received.
She also noticed that the air suddenly smelled acrid, like burning metal and scorched oil. It wasn’t entirely unpleasant, but it was sharp and foreign.
Are the alchemists the reason these shards can fly without mages? she wondered. Alchemists were different from traditional mages, or so she’d heard. They created things, mixed potions, and dabbled in flames and fumes. Maybe that’s why everything smells like it’s on fire.
She shook her head, pushing the thoughts aside. No time to dwell on what she didn’t understand. Her hands found the familiar controls, and a sense of calm settled over her as she ran her fingers over them. The layout felt right. Comfortable.
I can do this, she told herself. I’ve flown the Corsair plenty of times, and this is just another Corsair.
A voice crackled through the comms. “Launch in twenty minutes. All units will deploy at max altitude. Expect enemy contact within thirty minutes.”
There was so much she didn’t know, so many unanswered questions. But this much was clear: someone had attacked her home, and she now had the means to fight back.
Mary gripped the controls tighter.
I won’t let my Lord down. I won’t let Lindholm down.
…Now, if only she could slow the wild thrum of her heart, though she took some small solace in the way it seemed to be echoed by the machine beneath her.

2025-01-12 02:35:07 +0000 UTCRemember, the enemy gets a vote. If it is a choice between getting shot down by an enemy airship or using them, I think he will use them. His shards have the edge in shard vs shard combat, but we still don't know how well they will do against airships. What we do know is that the Jellyfish wasn't armed that well in the first place and he has probably traded some of the original guns for more launch bays. Originally he didn't even want to use chemical propellant weapons and save them for his expected struggle with the Queen. We see he changed his mind. Edit: For that matter, he could have invented far better anti-airship weapons. Something like a 3"/88mm/90mm AA gun firing AP or SAP shells from a pedestal mount can probably wreck any other airship from outside its own range. That is the sort of thing he is probably saving for the next phase.

2025-01-12 00:10:38 +0000 UTCWhile still thinking about the battle, something occurred to me. William said he did not have time or resources to replace the Jellyfish's guns. However, maybe he could supplement them. We know he has made at least 240 AN/M2 Browning .50 machine guns with ammunition. Given that, I wonder if he has also created some HB versions for ground or airship use. They wouldn't hit as hard as full-size airship aethercannon, but they would shoot faster and might have even longer range. Having a few twin or quad mounts on deck would be a good defense against any opposing shards that try to attack and would make the task of opposing saboteurs nearly suicidal.

2025-01-11 21:04:29 +0000 UTCThinking some more about the coms, I wonder if William has given his pilots any training in how to communicate? The system is brand new, so he doesn't have to worry about other radios interfering. However, a bunch of pilots in their first battle will probably be talking too much, unless they have been trained. The radios are broadcast, not like the Blackstone's crystal communicators which only allow one open channel from person X to Y at once. The main problem from William's perspective is he has to balance training against security. He has been very security conscious about preserving the secrets of his Corsair-Cs, but the radios are another problem. If the pilots are just being told about them now and have no prior experience with them, they are likely to talk over each other. There are reasons why radio operators use things like Roger, Over, Wilco, and Out. On the positive side, he doesn't need to worry about interception and spoofing, at least not yet. Edit: Think some more about the comms issues, there is one thing in William's favor. Nearly all of his pilots are plebians who have essentially been in the equivalent of military flight school. They started out more inclined to take orders than the noble heirs and have been under military instruction for months. When they are told to shut up unless they need to report, they probably will. Edit: For the record, I really hate autocorrupt.

2025-01-10 22:29:48 +0000 UTC…Still, their attack presented a rare opportunity. Her personal guard, both visible and shrouded in cloaking magic, immediately fell into formation around her. I wonder if William is on a timer. It sounds from this description that Yelena is prepared to detonate all the krakenslayer supplies in order to deny the information to the enemy and inflict as much damage as possible. If Yelena dies, that changes William's political calculations. I don't know if he knows anything about Yelena's heir, but she might be more persuadable.

2025-01-10 19:31:49 +0000 UTCI agree with those points. I was pointing out that while we know the Corsair-Cs are using actual .50 cal machine guns firing bullets propelled by smokeless powder, we still don't know anything about what they have for anti-airship weapons. I am assuming bombs and/or rockets, but we don't know.

2025-01-10 15:58:36 +0000 UTCThis seems to me to be a given; -Coirsars were supposed to gain maximum altitude to fly over the enemy and attack by surprise. -Airships seem to be both a more important target and one where surprise attacks play a greater role, due to the presence of anti-aircraft defenses. -Air combat with other shards seems easier once you've dropped 4000 pounds of bombs.

2025-01-09 21:38:20 +0000 UTCMy guess is B as well and probably Saturday. I think the advantages of the Corsair-C's increased durability, speed, and firepower will be sufficient, but the pilot experience levels (well trained, but this is their first battle) will prevent a crushing victory. Whether or not William has any new anti-shipping weapons for his Corsair-Cs is a big one. The OTL version could carry up to 4,000 lbs of bombs and rockets. The text mentioned that he has not had any time to upgrade the guns on the Jellyfish and we know that the Corsairs have .50 cal machine guns (Browning AN/M2). What was not specified was what type of anti-airship weapons they have. Conceivably it could be anything from the heavy fire lance (1,000 kg AP bomb loaded with napalm equivalent), to lighter versions, to HE AP or SAP bombs to 5" HVARs (High Velocity Aircraft Rockets) to Tiny Tims (11.75" aircraft rocket that amounts to a 500 lb SAP bomb strapped to a big rocket). Typical loads were a 2,000 lb bomb or two Tiny Tims under the fuselage, with a 1,000 lb bomb or 4 HVARs under each wing. We just don't know, but I am looking forward to finding out. The parachutes were mentioned when William originally discussed the task of teaching plebian (non-mage) pilots with Xela. Specifically this part from chapter 40: “No, it’s not. No mage in the cockpit means no lightning bolts at close range – and if the shard does get shot down, the poor sod inside won’t be able to bail out without being shredded by the propellers or falling to their death.” Once a marine-knight got the cockpit open, they could blast clear of the shard on a stream of aether, and thus avoid the grisly fate of being diced by their own shard’s propellers. Xela was well aware that a lot of mages saw plebians as ‘disposable’, but she’d be damned if she was one of them. Not after years living amongst them. “The former can be solved by the county investing in front-mounted props. A method of construction I’ve just made more viable,” William argued. “The latter can be solved by giving the plebian pilots parachutes. The same kind marines use for airdrops.” That was… not a terrible idea. A parachute was a major step down from a mage’s flight suit, but it’d work. And the boy’s new interrupter gear had made the notion of a front mount more viable. “And what if the pilot crashes over water?” she asked. The boy shrugged. “We’ll teach our candidates how to swim in the nearby lake. Or at least tread water for fifteen minutes.”

2025-01-09 19:12:05 +0000 UTCSo. The day has arrived. Time to place bets on when we will get the next chapter. I’m also placing bets on the outcome of the fight. So here are the odds Hopeful Friday release: 4/1 Possible Saturday release: 2/1 Sunday release: 8/1 Delays til next week: 12/1 Now for possible scenarios. Scenario A: total victory. With the element of surprise and a technical advantage, Williams forces eliminated most shards and proceed to defeat in detail the two split Core fleets. Casualties are minimal to none due to the durability, speed, and overall superiority of the F4U. Leaving no examples of his tech to be recovered by other groups. Scenario B: major victory. With the element of surprise and a technical advantage, Williams forces eliminate or drive off the shard force. However with only one shard on his side with anti-ship ordinance, the fleets would get swarmed but only one or two brought down. They would retreat and might have to deal with the royal navy or other forces. Casualties are minimal to none due to the durability, speed, and overall superiority of the F4U. Leaving no examples of his tech to be recovered by other groups. Scenario C: Pyrrhic victory. They are able to drive off the shards, but with casualties. Strafing the Core fleet is able to drive off the Enemy eventually, but with a cost of more lost aircraft and lives. His tech is now able to be studied by anyone who views and scavenge the wreckage. Scenario D: Defeat. Mistakes made, and surprise ambushes from unexpected angles from a third party reduce the numerical superiority early. Aircraft are shot down. But eventually William orders a withdrawal. As they withdraw a large explosion can be seen coming from the palace. A new Queen is needed. As for myself, I am betting for a Friday release and Scenario B being likely. By the way, did William give his pilots parachutes or is he Giving them the all or nothing treatment? I think it was mentioned that he would give them parachutes, but I can’t exactly recall where. I’m sure someone will mention to a T where exactly. Good luck Blue.

2025-01-08 19:20:43 +0000 UTCGood questions. I think his sister is back at the Redwater estate. Why bring her along? Granted, when the Jellyfish departed they were just expecting to cover for the capital fleet. They were not expecting to go into a desperate battle. As for his team, this is probably a weekend, so they are probably either visiting with William, at home with their families, or at the Academy. There was a mention of William's team being present behind him, but it was unclear if that meant his fellow students or his officers for the Jellyfish. William's mother is almost certainly back at Ashfield, although I suppose she could be visiting Olivia at Redwater.

2025-01-08 10:43:30 +0000 UTCOne of the things I am hoping to see in the next chapter is some actual examples of airship vs airship, shard vs airship, and shard vs shard combat. We have seen the immediate aftermath of a shard vs shard battle when William was reflecting on the battle his team had just lost. We have seen implied airship vs airship combat since the defenders over the capital are down to four ships and they are outnumbered by nearly two to one. That suggests the raiders still have about seven airships, so the defenders have inflicted some casualties. Granted, not nearly as many as they have suffered since I think 12-16 airships were destroyed when their skytowers were destroyed before they could undock. It sounds like airship vs airship combat is mainly the combatants shooting at each other with large aethercannons firing enchanted shells of various types. They may also use bombs if they get into a favourable position. This usually happens at close ranges because aethercannons seem to have relatively short ranges, maybe several hundred meters. Past that, they might still hit, but probably can't get through the armor. The really interesting question IMHO is what kind of weapons do shards use against airships. The only example we have seen described in the text is the heavy bomb intended for use by the Basilisk. "No, that came from the Basilisk’s payload. A single thousand kilogram fire-javelin loaded with bear-blood. Firepower sufficient to kill or cripple a light frigate in a single pass – and put considerable hurt on anything bigger." It sounds like this is a larger version of a typical anti-ship bomb. At a guess, William has these available in his ship's magazines. We know that William doesn't have better weapons on his airship because he remembered that he didn't have time to improve the Jellyfish's guns. He also hasn't had his house and his ship long enough to create heavily enchanted bombs or shells. We know his shards have better guns. The real question is whether or not he has invested in AP bombs and/or rockets with high explosive filling for his shards to use against the enemy airships. An OTL Corsair could carry a 2,000 lb bomb on the centerline and a 1,000 lb bomb or four 5" HVAR rockets under each wing. It could also carry two Tiny Tim rockets under the fuselage in lieu of the other options. I am looking forward to seeing what William has been working on. We will see if William goes to destroy all the opposing shards first or will he detail a squadron to attack the airships? If he really wants to go for the maximum initial impact, he could send them all out loaded for antishipping, expecting to wreck one group of the enemy airships, and then his now unloaded shards can wreck the enemy shards as they come after him and try to save or avenge their airships. This is where the enemy communications become really important. We know their shards are over the capital air fields. We know the enemy airships have split into two groups, one going for the university and one for the palace. What we don't know is whether the airships have a means of quickly recalling their shards if they run into an unexpected group of opposing shards, like the one William just brought in.

Pearl harbor was a surprise attack on a naval base that contained many military ships seeking to cripple the US navy in one strike, however the US navy lucked out because their carriers were not at harbor, they were training away from harbor independently. 2025-01-06 17:40:31 +0000 UTCDid we ever get any clarification as to why he "invented" the synchronization gear? Most shards are pusher designs so they don't need it. The Corsair is designed with wing-mounted guns, so it doesn't need them either. The only reason I can see is that it is an easy win for William and helps establish his chops as a designer, inventor, and mage-smith with his brand-new industrial complex. Especially since most of them are members of the Alchemists guild who might represent him because they have been summarily relocated from the capital. We saw some of this back in chapter 38. “Well, I guess we can call this a success,” he called out to the nearby blacksmiths. “Let’s see what other improvements we can get started on before I’ve got to go back to school.” A stunned silence greeted him, before a look of determination seemed to flash across the entire crowd. Perhaps in different circumstances someone might have cheered at the success of the ‘impossible’ that had just occurred. But given it had been him alone who’d developed it, that failed to materialize. Instead, all it had done was brought to life a flare of competitiveness amongst the many craftsmen. And he could work with that. Oh, he could definitely work with that. After all, he had a great many things planned for the new month. And these would be the people who would need to implement those things into a finished design once he flew back to the academy to start making the connections needed to actually leverage said inventions.

Of course, she is going to consider the line of succession. She doesn't think it will matter, but her eldest daughter is currently in combat herself. Yelena knows quite well that in combat people can die, regardless of how favorable the odds in their favor are. That is why she wasn't asleep when the attack started. She would at the very least consider who is second in line and if they are safe and can take over if she and her admiral-daughter are killed or incapacitated.

2025-01-05 23:55:33 +0000 UTCI think alchemists might be able to do something like this, but it will take time and I think the first couple of generations will probably need magic to power them. They would work for mage-pilots, but not plebian pilots. In the short term, that is what tactics and especially wingmen are for. The pilots have to be told, trained and taught to maintain situational awareness. I agree that it isn't easy, but they have all probably had examples of getting jumped in mock dogfights by their instructors. The bigger question for this fight is how much training have they had in flying at night? Their first battle is going to be over the capital, at night, with the main illumination sources various burning wrecked airships and building on the ground. On the plus side, Williams pilots will probably have surprise, along with superior numbers, better shards, better guns, and better coordination (radios). On the down side, this is their first battle and it is happening at night.

2025-01-05 19:20:45 +0000 UTCWe haven't actually seen the gunnery training the plebian pilots got (or any actual gunnery training) but I expect they also trained to engage airships and ground targets. They might not be used to shooting at much slower shards, but they will have experience shooting at ground targets and moving airships, both of which are much slower. Their real problem might be bad leading habits, because the .50 bullets travel faster than the aethercannon projectiles. This means they are likely to shoot in front of the target on a high deflection shot. If they take most of their shots from behind it will not matter much.

2025-01-05 16:14:05 +0000 UTCI think he used the synchronization gear as a smokescreen to conceal the reason why he’s creating shards with front facing engines. I presume he used the air cannons with the initial model, and then added the air cannons to the wings for training purposes And quietly dropped the synchronization gear. Plus, it doubled as a first step to see if those new craft women were up to the job. Giving them a first victory in achieving the impossible for moral. They probably needed that when he had them build a bunch of engine parts without telling them what the point was.

2025-01-05 09:09:25 +0000 UTCSo. Random question. Are there magical means of locating metals in this world? If so, could William create a magical form of directional radar that alerts pilots to any metal within say 400 yards? I bring this up because the biggest killer in dogfighting was situational awareness. Most pilots shot down didn’t see their enemy or know that they were in someone’s crosshairs until it was too late. Having the ability to be alerted that someone is behind you or be able to know something is in the clouds or hiding in the sun, etc…. Would be a real game changer as inexperienced pilots would be more obvious to these types of attacks. https://youtu.be/Iew9cu_9nf4?si=jfpZeMnhAx5d27oI Specifically at 12:30 Timestamp to get an idea of what I mean.

2025-01-05 01:38:12 +0000 UTCConcidering the political value the capital represents as a target, the light house is a vital instalation as an early warning system against attack. It also acts as a means to light up a target to make it easier to attack during night time attacks. As such, you want to make sure that it remains opporational against ground attacks from the enemy. Not much you can do if it gets bombed out of existance, but it should be a small fortress on to itself.

2025-01-05 01:36:01 +0000 UTCAnother woman, the markings of the city guard on her uniform spoke up. “In addition to those troops fighting fires in the city itself, we’ve dispatched garrisons to retake the lighthouses, but initial reports show the defenders there are dug in tight. Our own fortifications are working against us there.” Yelena wanted to scream and ask why then if her lighthouses were so fortified had they fallen so easily? She didn’t though because she already knew the answer. She is right that they were taken by surprise, but the question I have is why would they fortify a lighthouse in the first place? The classic use for a lighthouse is as a navigation aid for seagoing or riverine shipping. Why fortify a navigation aid? On this world, they might have a secondary purpose as lookouts against a kraken getting into the harbour. That is plausible, but why fortify against a kraken? The kraken is more likely to try to eat ships in the harbor, rather than try to destroy a lighthouse. For that matter, why are the enemy trying to hold the light houses? The only reason I can think of is as a distraction. They want to make the Queen pay more attention to potential reinforcements while the raiders are getting on with their business. That leads to the bigger question, why are the Lunites doing this? A raid to try to get the krakenslayer seems like the most likely possibility. The ten sub-airships represent a force that can do a lot of damage, but it can't hold the city against the RN. There are probably only about 6-7 left by now. The Lindholmians were taken by surprise and defeated, but I doubt they went without taking any of the attackers down as well. For that matter, unlike the Lunite airships over the pirate/mercenary force, the sub-airships are not all fast Lunite ships. I fully expect the RN will run most of them down and either capture or destroy them, if they stick around. Any ground raiding they are doing is on a hard timer unless they want to get killed or captured by a really angry RN when the capital fleet returns.

2025-01-05 00:20:33 +0000 UTCI’m very excited to see the Corsairs tear them to pieces. As William said the engine is much more powerful, so they will be much faster and more maneuverable it seems. Though I do wonder if there will be some problems with the new pilots not being ready for just how fast their planes are and messing up their learning by timing for maneuvers. Sure they’re faster but if you’re used to plotting out how to lead your shots or when to engage and start firing on a machine that is 20-30mph slower, you’re probably gonna completely whiff. Not that the enemy will have much chance hitting you though, when all they see is a blur as you hurtle past them.

2025-01-04 22:00:22 +0000 UTCJust to clarify, that high compression is what you need at altitude. Without it your engine loses power as altitude increases. The difference between using 100 octane and 80 octane was about 20-30 mph in speed and significantly slower rate of climb. The British found this out the hard way in the early stages of the Battle of Britain.

2025-01-04 21:44:10 +0000 UTCAgreed. The USAAF standard for convergence in WW2 was IIRC about 250 yards. Individual pilots could adjust that to their personal preference, but I don't think many were taking shots at 500 yards and many preferred even shorter distances than the 250 yard standard.
Trevayne
2025-01-04 21:39:18 +0000 UTCIt sounds plausible to hit the academy group first, once they go after the airships. I think they first want to get rid of the enemy shards, so they have to take out the groups orbiting the airfields. Once they do that, they might get reinforced by any shards that didn't try to take off earlier after seeing their fellows get shot down by the Lunite shards.

2025-01-04 21:33:38 +0000 UTCI agree that the Corsairs are likely to have the advantage, but if the Lunites do not have comms they are going to get slaughtered. 2025-01-04 21:29:00 +0000 UTC9 months of training is more than a lot of pilots got in ww2. They are piloting familiar craft that have tremendous performance and armament advantages. They outnumber the enemy at least 2 to 1. Also greatly helping is that the plebians aren't going to be restricted by the honorable fight mentality of the marine knights. They can boom and zoom without regard for a 'fair fight'. Some casualties will occur but the KD ratio should be well in their favor.

2025-01-04 20:44:54 +0000 UTCAt idle radials sip fuel in comparison to flight settings. It's basically an inconsequential amount of fuel consumption. Considering the design of the Jellyfish it would be suicidal to move it into range of the enemy. The Jellyfish should be used in a conventional carrier manner as per WW2 era doctrines. Keep at range maneuver to avoid contact and keep tossing planes at the enemy. BTW You do NOT want to take off with a cold radial engine. Standard procedure is to give them at least 5 minutes to warm up. Then it took another 30 or so minutes for all the planes to be launched so they can group up before heading towards their targets.

2025-01-04 20:32:14 +0000 UTCWhat's funny is premium in other countries like Japan can be above 100 octane. Octane only matters if you're running a high compression engine and/or forced air induction. The higher octane's resistance to detonation means you can safely run higher manifold pressures. Really allows the full ability of systems like the P-47's turbo supercharger to run at high settings. I'm sure you already know this but I've run into a lot of people who don't understand that higher octane means harder to burn. So this is more a comment for the lurkers. AVgas was popular for use on drag strips in my area for that reason. Run the boost at low levels on the street then switch to avgas and high boost settings for the strip. Or in my case take a high compression engine and add the laughing gas.

Ma Deuce can bring some serious pain on lightly armored targets. Upgrading to the 20mm version will provide more space for some serious HE rounds. In warthunder sim and realistic battles I can pop planes with .50 cals out past a KM. I prefer a much closer target though. Just like in real life at that distance vehicles start looking quite small. 2025-01-04 20:15:30 +0000 UTCI assume the smaller group of enemy units are heading to the academy. SO that would be a natural starting point for Wiliam's forces. Begin the process of defeat in detail AND get re-reinforcements from the academy. Pick up his future wives and whatever shards/instructors he can from the academy and move on to the next fight. I also would expect William to have his own version of ship killing "javelins" as described in the Basilisk chapters.
Vonbaron
2025-01-04 20:14:15 +0000 UTCEven if the Lunites have coms it's not going to help much when they engage fighters that are superior in every metric. Based on comments made in universe the engines are vastly stronger and who knows what other upgrades have been included. Certainly the aerodynamic knowledge used in the building of corsairs exceeds that shown in shard construction. It's going to be like the first time the allied airmen ran into Me 163. I wouldn't compare the situation to the ME262 simply because the ME262 engines had issues and the plane itself weighed like +3000 lbs more than a prop fighter. The corsairs in comparison have tremendously more power with similar weight to the shards. The pilots of the corsairs aren't stuck in the dogma of the old world either. They have no honor bound duty to engage in a fair fight (as described in the basilisk chapter). They can boom and zoom all they want because they are just plebs after all.. So all factors combined even with relatively inexperienced pilots William's group should see a high KD ratio in their favor.

While he's there he can pick up some of his harem and start bombing runs on the next group of enemy warships. I assume the basilisk is still operational with it's ship killing ordinance. I would be surprised if William hasn't been making his own version of ship killing missiles too.

What if she is killed? Who is next in line? Is it her daughter, the Admiral commanding the capital fleet now engaging the diversion force? Or is it a different daughter and where are they? Mildly surprising that Yelena didn't think of her heir and how Lindholm will continue if she is gone. It certainly will continue, but what kind of Lindholm will it be? If one of her daughters is in charge will she rescind the anti-slavery decrees to make peace with Blackstone and New Haven?

It is also an idea that he could license or sell, even if it is not needed for the Corsair. The Corsair's guns were wing-mounted because the forward fuselage was full of engine. 2025-01-04 07:46:16 +0000 UTCRadio is Lindholm only as far as we have seen. However, the Blackstones invented their own crystal short-range coms which Tala's team used in the team duel. We don't really have any idea about the Lunite coms, although I am pretty sure Yotul's ship has a communications crystal. I can't see the Lunites doing this without anyway to call it off. Which pilots? We already know that the pilots on the Jellyfish have radios. They can hear their instructions over the coms and as non-mages I doubt they could use magical communications. I agree that it is going to be very important if the Lunite shard pilots have some kind of communications. If they don't, they are going to get wrecked. William's pilots are going to have height, speed, and technological surprise advantages over the Luinite shards flying circles over the air fields around the capital. Since they started out with 20, they probably lost a few while fighting the few LIndholmiasn shards that launched from the patroling airships. Since then they have kept busy shooting down any Linndholmisan shard trying to take off. At a guess, there are probably three groups of 5-6, probably 15-16 in total orbiting the airfields at about 2,000 feet looking for and bouncing anyone trying to take off.

2025-01-04 07:36:04 +0000 UTCWell the cadets have been getting there asses kicked for around 9 months now. That's not a ton of time but not a small amount either. They have also been getting trained like they are going to war next week the whole time. So super aggressively. I'm assuming they have around 4hrs of loitering time in the tanks with 30 minutes of combat speed in there. I'm also figuring they got a nose mounted gun firing through the prop so no convergence issues. If they just clear a couple air fields they should easily gain shard dominance. Then the 10 v 4 airship fight will look alot different. Lots of stuff being gambled on though. William is going to have to answer a whole shit ton of questions. New airship design. New weapon design. New shard design. New type of pilot. New launch and recovery methodology. New command and control procedures. That's just off the top my head. Hopefully he doesn't lose to many pilots. 🙏

2025-01-04 07:31:20 +0000 UTCErr, no we don't know the twins on on board, because they aren't. We don't even know if they are still alive, although I expect they are. Here is the quote: “Already done,” Xela said. “Though you should know the twins have sent a request to use our airship as a berth once the vassal fleet gathers over the capital.” The twins were requesting permission to base on the Jellyfish after it arrived at the capital. The Jellyfish hasn't gotten to the capital yet and the war is already underway. The odds are the if the twins arrived separately in the Basilisk, it is stuck on the ground. I doubt they would try to take off after seeing every other shard trying to take off get immediately shot down. Or they tried to take off and got shot down already. As for the others, he does have a few Corsair-Ms, probably 3-4. They aren't as capable because they have aether-cannon, not AN/M2 .50 cals and they are slower due to having less power. The twins aren't there and as for his paramours, only Xela has a shard and is there. Griffith almost certainly isn't, because she would be at the academy or on her family's ship, which may have just been shot down.

2025-01-04 05:59:31 +0000 UTCAnother thing to enjoy about this chapter is seeing how the Jellyfish handles flight ops. We knew it had a flat topside to use as a landing deck, but now we also see that it has launch bays that Corsair-Cs take off from. At a guess, these are like single-shard hangars, with doors on both ends. The Corsair in in the bay, with the wheels chocked, the pilot gets in and starts the engine. When the command to launch is given, the exterior door is opened and the chocks released. The spinning propeller now pulls the shard out of the bay and into flight. Effectively the aircraft ios being ejected into flight. This would not work on a wet navy carrier because the shard would hit the water before getting to flight speed. However, with several hundred or thousand feet of open air, it works fine and the catapults of a wet navy carrier are not needed. The shard flies away, does its mission, and now returns. It does a rolling landing on the flat flight deck on top of the Jellyfish. It then gets moved to an elevator and is brought down to the hangar. In the hangar it gets services and when ready, it gets pushed into a launch bay to repeat the process. There are a couple of points I noticed in thinking about this. First, I doubt that the Jellyfish has forty launch bays. Each bay needs to be able to hold a Corsair-C with its wings open. If it really has 40 bays, why bother with wing folding, unless the eventual intent is for the Jellyfisjh to carry 80 Corsair-Cs, with 40 in the bays and 40 more in the hangar bay with their wings folded. If that is the case, people only think the Jellyfish is scary now. They haven't begin to understand the terror of an 80 shard carrier. The more likely possibility is that it has 20 launch bays, ten on each side, with the other 20 shards in the hangar with folded wings. It can't launch 40 at once, just 20, with the other 20 following in about 4-5 minutes. Even this is impressive, since it can effectively launch the full shard complement of two Brimstones in five minutes.

2025-01-04 05:09:58 +0000 UTCI get that they are all elves, so all mages. I still assume they would use flight suits for the ability to manoeuvre. Even if they can drop from higher altitudes, why would they? The longer they have to drop, the longer they are exposed to hostile fire. Even if they think boltbows firing from the ground don't have that much range when firing up, the shooters get more time to track descending jump troops to better line up their shots.
Trevayne
2025-01-04 05:01:41 +0000 UTCI think one thing that's been overlooked is how many shards does William actually have? We know that he considers the full compliment of the Jellyfish to be 40, but he doesn't count anything but his Corsair-c when he tallies up his aircraft in his head, and is dismissive of other shards. We know already that the Twins have their bomber on the flight deck, which brings the tally to 41, but did his other paramours hear of it and invite themselves along like the picnic? That would add a couple more, plus he probably would like to have cover for his real Corsairs, so would he have the Corsair-m's on full view on the deck? To both distract from the one's inside and bring extra? It would jive with his preparedness and diversionary tactics, which would be 4(?) trainers? Also, don't the instructors have personal shards? Since he's so close to home, even if he left any behind they should be able to catch up? Even if he doesn't have them directly, he can muster about 50 shards without any stretches.
Colter Garcia
2025-01-04 05:01:07 +0000 UTCThe shards we've been exposed to so far aren't really armored in the conventional sense. So I figure in that world/setting an AN/M2 fired .50 BMG round would be effective out to 2KM or more. No real idea on how sensitive the shard's systems are to damage either. My hype for the next chapter is already too much..

2025-01-04 03:02:24 +0000 UTCThinking some more about this, the Lunites may be really screwed, depending on what they are after. If they are really trying to steal the Krakenslayer secret, they are going to have to storm the palace and/or the college. That means landing troops. How do they do that without bringing the airships close to the ground. I guess they could have flight suits for their entire landing force, but even then they want to start close to the ground lest they get shot while flying down, with no cover. That means that when William arrives, all the opposing airships should be in two groups at low altitude. That suggests they could get a very rude surprise if their lookouts are tired. For that matter, this was a night attack. They might not see him coming until the Jellyfish is over head dropping bombs.

2025-01-04 01:34:53 +0000 UTCOh, well. I think there are more cliffhangers coming leading up to the big one that ends this book. Do you really think Blue can wrap this story up in five chapters? I don't. I think he can maybe wrap up the Lunite attack and its immediate consequences, but then all hell is going to break loose. Assuming William's aid helps save the capital, everybody else is going to start thinking about the implications of shards that don't need mages. They will know that those are not limited by the limited supply of cores and will have to move now. This I expect the Solite Empress to tell New Haven they have to move now. New Haven will press Blackstone and the Duchess will have to decide whether they are going to take out the monarchy or not. Do they really want to weaken Lindholm in front of a clear Lunite threat? We will see. I would be happy to see it all resolved in five chapters, but I don't see how. One interesting possibility would be if Blackstone and New Haven attack, could Yotuil and Yelena cut a deal for Yotul to take a couple of ships and attack Blackstone from the rear? Maybe that would get Yelena willing to give the orcs some concessions, like a duchy. The orcs might be willing if they realize that if the monarchy falls, the Blackstones and New Haven will enslave every last one of them because there will be no RN to worry about.

2025-01-04 00:03:02 +0000 UTCAnother really interesting question that we should find out about next chapter is if the Lunites have any intershard communications beyond hand signals. If they don't, they are going to get slaughtered. William's shards can be directed. He or his squadron leaders can tell B flight to attack from the port side and A from the front, for example. If the enemy doesn't have at least something resembling that they are going to get crushed, by superior numbers that have much superior coordination. Especially since they are probably spread out in at least three groups, since the Lunites have shards over each local airfield shooting down any Lindholmian shards trying to take off. To ensure they are in range, the Lunites are probably 1,000 or 2,000 feet up, which means that William's forces should have a major height edge as well.
Trevayne
2025-01-03 23:53:28 +0000 UTCI think william is trying to be careful with his pilots. After all, the entire concept of a fuel limited shard or airship is new. Regular aether powered shards or airships are only limited by the mage's endurance. They don't run out of fuel. By telling them 30 minutes, he gives them a limit that reminds them they do have to return or the shard is gone. It probably is conservative though. I expect they could manage with an hour limit, but that means some will stay out for an hour and a half. As for the guns, that is an interesting point. Here is the aether autocannon info quote: He shrugged. “Our lessons say that against an aluminium frame, aether cannons are considered effective at three hundred and fifty meters. And while they can be dangerous at over six hundred meters, we only have so much ammo, so it’s best to save our shots until we’re likely to do more than scratch paint.” Given that, a .50 cal can probably inflict damage at say 50% greater ranges, but hitting a shard at 900 meters will be difficult. That extra range is probably best reserved for strafing large targets like airships.
Trevayne
2025-01-03 23:34:57 +0000 UTCThere's also the question of the potency of the fuel being used compared to actual refined gasoline used for corsair engines. Do we know if the fuel the alchemists have made has the same bang for their buck as jet fuel (or whatever the historical equivalent of the time was)?

2025-01-03 22:17:26 +0000 UTCtwo things stand out to me. 1- the 30min flight time, probably not diminshed by idling on the deck but well, reads a bit iffy. 2- With the 50cals, i hope they got briefed on their ability. Would hate for them to wait for shard engagement range instead.
RageBone
2025-01-03 21:15:18 +0000 UTCYes. I hate to think about Yotul's reaction when she finds out that her efforts to support orc independence have probably delayed the ending of slavery. That leads to another question. Just how much do the Northern Orcs struggling for independence really know about the outside world? They know who their Northern enemies are, but do they have any idea about those who might be neutral or even potential allies? The US revolutionaries in the American Revolution knew about the outside world and were wise enough to seek assistance from France. The French had been fighting the British on and off for most of the last five centuries and had lost the last round, so they were inclined to help to try to get some of their own back. Have the orcs tried anything similar before this?
Trevayne
2025-01-03 21:07:14 +0000 UTCThink some more about how this is going to unfold, who is commanding the shards and how are they organized? My guess would be squadrons of 10-12. The basic unit is a pair of shards, the lead and the wingman (probably wingwoman, but less confusing). Two pairs make up a flight, the basic tactical formation using finger four. The question is whether the squadron should just be three flights, or two flights plus the squadron commander and their wingman, so 10 or 12? Ten would evenly use up all 40 shards with four ten shard squadrons. Twelve would mean three squadrons with four left over for the wing commander and their flight (3x12=36+4=40). Will William command from a shard or will he stay on the Jellyfish with Xela as his commander in the air? I could see arguments both ways, but given William's unique knowledge and abilities, he really shouldn't be in a shard.
Trevayne
2025-01-03 21:04:19 +0000 UTCLuckily, the enemy only has 20 craft to contest them with. They have "dozens" so I would guess around 40-60. Even with an abysmal casualty ratio, they will win. Especially considering that once they engage the enemy, the enemy will no longer have the free numbers available needed to keep the airfields locked down, allowing the experienced royal pilots to get into the air without instantly being shot down. Equaling the skill gap, and widening the defender's numerical advantage.

2025-01-03 20:26:58 +0000 UTCI had similar worries but checked wiki. An OTL Corsair had over four hours of flying time at cruise speed, so they should be good, unless the fuel tanks are much smaller or the fuel much less energetic. I think the section should be reworded so that William tells them they should have at least 30 minutes at combat power before they have to return. Hopefully, he also explained the fuel gauge in their preflight briefing. Thinking about it, I really hope they gave the pilots a briefing once they heard about the attack so they have a better idea of the differences between the Corsair-C and the Corsair-Ms they have been flying. Wiulliam visiting as many planes as he can before they start taking off will help, but I doubt he has time to do that for every pilot. They also needed a briefing to have some idea of what they are supposed to do. Are they all taking off with just their guns to clear away the enemy shards, or are some getting bombs or rockets to hit the airships? It sounds like there are around seven enemy airships left, since the four defenders are outnumbered nearly 2 to 1. Now this briefing doesn't have to be explicit, just a reference in the next chapter, maybe something like "Red Squadron, attack the far left airship, just like we briefed".
Trevayne
2025-01-03 20:00:46 +0000 UTCi think there’s a difference in fuel usage for the engine idling and the engine actually outputting power. think about how a car won’t burn through its gas nearly as fast if it is just running and sitting in park. Hopefully William also added in a buffer when he told the pilots 30 minutes, because they also need some time to circle and land on the carrier.
Star i
2025-01-03 19:00:25 +0000 UTCIs 30 minutes of fuel enough to have a battle and land back on a carrier? How many aircraft can land at a time? To land 40 planes one at a time every 30 seconds you still need 20 minutes and that assuming that every first landing is a success. Imagine if one of corsairs crashes onto the deck and starts a fire. I think William shouldn't be such a miser on fuel.

2025-01-03 18:53:40 +0000 UTCThe biggest new thing brought in might not be the Corsair itself, but the Browning .50 cal AN/M2 (aircraft version, still referred to as Ma Deuce from the ground mounted M2). We know that William wanted to hold off chemically propelled firearms until after the Civil War but I am glad he reconsidered. The Lunites are going to be pissed. The ones that survive at least. A lot of them are going to be dead. We know a typical shard has 2-4 aether autocannon. They seem to have an effective range of 200 yards. The effective range of an Ma Deuce can be much longer. Used as a singleshot sniper weapon it killed people at over 1,000 yards. Against aircraft, probably 200-300 yards, depending on where the convergence is set. This means a head on pass probably sees the Corsair-C win, because it can start shooting at 400 yards and its opponent will be shot down before they can start shooting themselves. The implications beyond this battle are even bigger. I can easily see Yelenma asking "What are those weapons, how do they work, and can you make them bigger?"

2025-01-03 18:14:44 +0000 UTCIf the fighters are being started up twenty minutes until launch and thirty until contact, but with only thirty minutes of usable fuel, they will be done before entering engagement range. Simply cutting it to something like "all crew prepare for mid air launch operations to begin in five minutes. Pilots prepare for launch and engagement of enemy air elements in fifteen." This would help make sure you have fighters that aren't going to have the plot hole if no more fuel while fighting.

And at the finale, right as the ammo runs out and all hope is lost, a flight of Corsairs screams in overhead and starts decimating the Japanese planes. 2025-01-03 17:22:59 +0000 UTCGreat update with lots to think about. These may be inexperienced cadets with no previous combat, but they have had a few months of training in shards that were deliberately made to resembles these. Right down to the "defective thruster valve" that simulates the excessive torque issues. It is good that they have started to familiarize the cadets with their shards before they actually take off. However, once everyone has a couple of minutes of listening, they should turn the engines off. It would be regrettable to have spent most of the 30 minutes of flight time wasting fuel on the deck. Or was that mention supposed to be 30 minutes of flight time after spending 20 minutes running the engines on the deck? On the plus side, the opposing shards are screwed. They started with 20 and have probably lost some. They have the height advantage over the shards trying to launch from the air fields because they already have altitude, but they are probably not at max altitude because they have to reach shards trying to take off before they gain much if any height. That means they are going to be hit by 40 shards with their own height advantage. So they are immediately outnumbered by over 2-1 and at a height disadvantage. It gets worse though. The enemy pilots are either free orcs or Lunites. None of them has ever seen a Corsair-M and no one outside Redwater has ever seen a Corsair-C. Assuming that as the author has mentioned, these enemy shards are equivalent to early WW2 Zeros, in performance and armor, they are going to have a very unpleasant introduction to the Corsair-C. The really nasty part will be their introduction to Ma Deuce.

2025-01-03 13:07:19 +0000 UTCOhh hell yea next chapter should be good The enemy fleet is about to get it's shit rocked and they won't be able to do shit about it Also hope we get the pov of some of the students prepping for war Hoping they get creative, after all their training bolt bow shots may only paralize, but it leaves the target screwed

2025-01-03 12:58:04 +0000 UTCOoooh boy. There will be some proper rip and tear then. If the newbie pilots can score some good hits, that is... flying a new type of aircraft with no previous combat experience is... risky.

2025-01-03 12:51:38 +0000 UTCWhat was the Jellyfish's full compliment again? Are these Corsairs firing the same weapons their in-world contemporaries use, or more like our Corsair did? Because I wanna see what 4 (or 6 on the later models) Browning 50cal machine guns would do to a shard.
