His Dad died when he was a kid and he spent his entire life thinking he was just a weak drunk who couldn't fix himself for his family. (There's so much more to alcoholism, but the Enchanted Forest isn't exactly gonna understand that much...) Then he found out about James, and in the grand scheme of things I wouldn't say it was that long ago for him that he found that out and was forced to go take his place and refer to King George as his "Father" and he continuously was ruining his life after already ruining his brother's. And then suddenly he finds out his Father hadn't died in an accident, he hadn't been drunk, he'd been working to fix the mistake of selling his son and had been murdered for it by that same man. All while everything is just going terribly for him and his family. His daughter's life is being threatened, he and his wife can never be together, and things just aren't good. So of course when he finds out the man who ruined his life before also killed his dad, he reacted. Plus, he is surrounded by former villains who all went down the vengeance path and there's likely a kind of resentment that he doesn't feel like he's allowed to feel that. If that makes sense? I also think it's very interesting how many parallels they draw with Killian and James. I mean all the way back in S3 David compared the two (while Killian compared David to Liam) and then in S5 we learned that Killian and Liam were sold by their Father at a young age, just as James was, though into different circumstances both these things caused a lot of trauma.
